Ultrasonic study conducted during an operation is finding wider use lately. Surgery is the main method of treatment of most diseases of the adrenals, therefore problems of topical intraoperative diagnosis are very urgent. We evaluated the usefulness of transabdominal ultrasonography (TAS) for endometrial abnormalities in postmenopausal women. A total of 232 postmenopausal women were examined by TAS and endometrial sampling. The utility of ultrasound in the primary examination of patients with Perthes disease was evaluated. Nineteen patients were examined with a longitudinal lateral and an anterior scan. Ultrasound was reliable in diagnosing Perthes disease when the surface of the ossified epiphysis was irregular and when fragmentation had occurred. Nine patients with splanchnic venous thrombosis are presented and the value of noninvasive imaging in their initial diagnosis and subsequent follow-up is emphasized. Angiography, traditionally the definitive investigation in such cases, can be reserved for preoperative assessment in those patients considered candidates for surgery. The age of venous thrombi can be estimated by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which aids selection of therapy, and in those anticoagulated, prediction of prognosis.

The usefulness of ultrasonography (US) in the diagnosis of aldosterone-producing adenoma(s) (APA) was compared with computed tomography (CT) and adrenal scintigraphy in 13 patients. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy and limitation of Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in the preoperative evaluation of the cardiac cancer (cancer in the area less than 2 cm from the esophago-gastric junction). High-frequency endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) was used to image the pancreas through the wall of the stomach and duodenum in 12 patients with clinically suspected pancreatic endocrine tumors. In another patient, endocrine tumors in the wall of the duodenum were imaged by EUS. The placental circulations of 25 normal and five complicated pregnancies were studied by color Doppler ultrasonography. Flow velocity waveforms were obtained in all 30 pregnancies and could discriminate between fetal and maternal intraplacental blood flow. We believe that color Doppler ultrasonography will improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of various pregnancy disorders that alter the placental circulations and that color ultrasonography is useful for the prenatal differential diagnosis of intrauterine masses.

Eighteen pregnancies with nonimmune hydrops fetalis were referred for fetal echocardiography to rule out congenital heart disease. In 14 of these cases, pulsating blood velocities were recorded in the umbilical vein, which in a normal population had a nonpulsatile blood velocity pattern.
