OBJECTIVES: To test the feasibility of using the iontophoretic catheter as a means of delivering local anesthetic (lidocaine hydrochloride) to the urethra for periurethral injection of collagen.
METHODS: Eight women with urodynamically proven genuine stress incontinence underwent periurethral collagen injections. Local anesthesia was provided by 4% lidocaine with 1 in 100,000 epinephrine administered over 10 minutes using an iontophoretic catheter. Pain was assessed by Likert and visual analogue scales. In a prospective blinded comparative clinical study 125 women underwent videocystourethrography and cystometry as well as transperineal ultrasound as part of their diagnostic work-up for urinary incontinence or after incontinence-correcting surgery. A rare case of wide urethra in a female infant mimicking as a urethral diverticulum in association with ectopic ureterocele is reported. The ureterocele terminated just below the bladder neck, but the diverticulum-like structure everted from the wide urethra, protruding towards the ureterocele. Weakness of the urethral wall, distal to the actual ureterocele may produce such an abnormal radiologic finding. The pertinent literature is reviewed.

We report a rare case of complete duplication of the bladder, urethra and external genitalia associated with other multiple congenital anomalies, such as ventriculoseptal defect, malrotation of the gut, ectopic anal opening, malascended left kidney, rachischisis of the lumbar spine and sacrum, and an umbilical hernia. To our knowledge the occurrence of these associated anomalies in a single case of complete duplication of the bladder, urethra and external genitalia has not been reported previously.

Analysis of 21 patients with primary carcinoma of the female urethra who were treated by radiation only, from 1961 to 1980, is presented. Of 21 patients studied, 14 were treated for curative intent, 6 for palliation, and 1 patient did not finish the treatment as planned. We reviewed the outcome following primary definitive repair by catheter splinting in 16 patients presenting with total posterior urethral disruption following pelvic injury. There were two deaths in the early post-operative period due to pulmonary embolism associated with other serious injuries.
