Patient-cooperative strategies for robot-aided treadmill training: first experimental results.

Task-oriented repetitive movements can improve motor performance in patients with neurological or orthopaedic lesions. The application of robotics and automation technology can serve to assist, enhance, evaluate, and document neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation. This paper deals with the application of "patient-cooperative" techniques to robot-aided gait rehabilitation of neurological disorders. We define patient-cooperative to mean that, during movement, the technical system takes into account the patient's intention and voluntary efforts rather than imposing any predefined movements o

Efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy to treat driving phobia: a case report.

An AB case design was used to examine the efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) in treating driving phobia. After a one week baseline, the patient received three treatment sessions over a ten day period. Treatment included practice of four VR driving scenarios. Peak anxiety decreased within and across sessions. Ratings of anxiety and avoidance declined from pre-treatment and post-treatment, with gains maintained at seven month followup. Phobia-related interference in daily functioning similarly decreased. The results suggest that it would be useful to further evaluate the efficac

Automated cervical precancerous cells screening system based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy features.

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy technique can detect the abnormality of a cervical cell that occurs before the morphological change could be observed under the light microscope as employed in conventional techniques. This paper presents developed features extraction for an automated screening system for cervical precancerous cell based on the FTIR spectroscopy as a second opinion to pathologists. The automated system generally consists of the developed features extraction and classification stages. Signal processing techniques are used in the features extraction stage. Then, dis

Development of an automatic subsea blowout preventer stack control system using PLC based SCADA.

An extremely reliable remote control system for subsea blowout preventer stack is developed based on the off-the-shelf triple modular redundancy system. To meet a high reliability requirement, various redundancy techniques such as controller redundancy, bus redundancy and network redundancy are used to design the system hardware architecture. The control logic, human-machine interface graphical design and redundant databases are developed by using the off-the-shelf software. A series of experiments were performed in laboratory to test the subsea blowout preventer stack control system. The resu

Computational tool for modeling and simulation of mechanically ventilated patients.

The mechanical ventilator settings in patients with respiratory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during episodes of acute respiratory failure (ARF) is not a simple task that in most cases is successful based on the experience of physicians. This paper describes an interactive tool based in mathematical models, developed to make easier the study of the interaction between a mechanical ventilator and a patient. It describes all stages of system development, including simulated ventilatory modes, the pathologies of interest and interaction between the user and the system

A visual graphic/haptic rendering model for hysteroscopic procedures.

Hysteroscopy is an extensively popular option in evaluating and treating women with infertility. The procedure utilises an endoscope, inserted through the vagina and cervix to examine the intra-uterine cavity via a monitor. The difficulty of hysteroscopy from the surgeon's perspective is the visual spatial perception of interpreting 3D images on a 2D monitor, and the associated psychomotor skills in overcoming the fulcrum-effect. Despite the widespread use of this procedure, current qualified hysteroscopy surgeons have not been trained the fundamentals through an organised curriculum. The emer

Development and preliminary evaluation of VISLAN, a surgical planning and guidance system using intra-operative video imaging.

VISLAN is an integrated neurosurgical planning and guidance system. New segmentation and rendering techniques have been incorporated. A stereo video system is used intra-operatively and fulfils four roles. First, the video display is overlaid with graphical outlines showing the position of the planned craniotomy or the target (enhanced reality displays). Second, a skin surface patch is reconstructed from the stereo video images using patterned light (mean errors of surface point location are < 0.15 mm). Third, a freely mobile, hand-held localizer is tracked in real time (position errors are <

Is Video Gaming a Cure for Cybersickness? Gamers Experience Less Cybersickness Than Non-Gamers in a VR Self-Motion Task.

Cybersickness remains a major drawback of Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, as a breadth of stationary experiences with visual self-motion can result in visually-induced motion sickness. However, not everybody experiences the same intensity or type of adverse symptoms. Here we propose that prior experience with virtual environments can predict ones degree of cybersickness. Video gaming can enhance visuospatial abilities, which in-turn relate negatively to cybersickness - meaning that consistently engaging in virtual environments can result in protective habituation effects. In a controlled statio

Virtual modelling of the impact of torsional loading on osteoporotic vertebrae buckling.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical response or load transfer on the osteoporotic L1 vertebra under torsional loading. Methods: To achieve this goal, a numerical model of osteoporotic vertebra in various trabecular bone degenerations was developed and tested. The mechanical behavior of the model was represented taking into account the anisotropic properties of the cancellous bone, which provided a more realistic mechanical picture of the biological subsystem. To ensure the reliability of osteoporotic degradation, the thinning of cortical bone and the appearance of gaps betw

TouchMark: Partial Tactile Feedback Design for Upper Limb Rehabilitation in Virtual Reality.

The use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology, especially in medical rehabilitation, has expanded to include tactile cues along with visual stimuli. For patients with upper limb hemiplegia, tangible handles with haptic stimuli could improve their ability to perform daily activities. Traditional VR controllers are unsuitable for patient rehabilitation in VR, necessitating the design of specialized tangible handles with integrated tracking devices. Besides, matching tactile stimulation with corresponding virtual visuals could strengthen users' embodiment (i.e., owning and controlling virtual bodies

Exercise Intensity-Driven Level Design.

Games and experiences designed for virtual or augmented reality usually require the player to move physically to play. This poses substantial challenge for level designers because the player's physical experience in a level will need to be considered, otherwise the level may turn out to be too exhausting or not challenging enough. This paper presents a novel approach to optimize level designs by considering the physical challenge imposed upon the player in completing a level of motion-based games. A game level is represented as an assembly of chunks characterized by the exercise intensity leve

In vivo biomechanical measurement and haptic simulation of portal placement procedure in shoulder arthroscopic surgery.

A survey of 67 experienced orthopedic surgeons indicated that precise portal placement was the most important skill in arthroscopic surgery. However, none of the currently available virtual reality simulators include simulation / training in portal placement, including haptic feedback of the necessary puncture force. This study aimed to: (1) measure the in vivo force and stiffness during a portal placement procedure in an actual operating room and (2) implement active haptic simulation of a portal placement procedure using the measured in vivo data. We measured the force required for port plac

A diet management information and communication system to help chronic kidney patients cope with diet restrictions.

Hyperphosphatemia, hyperkalemia, and fluid overload are frequently observed and pose major physiological concerns in chronic kidney patients. The problems are closely related to inadequate diet and phosphate binder intake, which are considerable challenges for many patients. The objective of this study was to develop and test an educational decision support system to help kidney patients cope with diet restrictions and phosphate binder dosage. A prototype was designed including three main functions: 1) information and education, 2) food analyser database and diet registration, and 3) model-bas

A comparison of orthopaedic resident performance on surgical fixation of an ulnar fracture using virtual reality and synthetic models.

BACKGROUND: Surgical trainees develop surgical skills using various techniques, with simulators providing a safe learning environment. Fracture fixation is the most common procedure in orthopaedic surgery, and residents may benefit from simulated fracture fixation. The performance of residents on a virtual simulator that allows them to practice the surgical fixation of fractures by providing a sense of touch (haptics) has not yet been compared with their performance using other methods of practicing fracture fixation, such as a Sawbones simulator model. The purpose of this study was to assess

A comparison of adaptive and adaptable automation under different levels of environmental stress.

UNLABELLED: The effectiveness of different forms of adaptive and adaptable automation was examined under low- and high-stress conditions, in the form of different levels of noise. Thirty-six participants were assigned to one of the three types of variable automation (adaptive event-based, adaptive performance-based and adaptable serving as a control condition). Participants received 3 h of training on a simulation of a highly automated process control task and were subsequently tested during a 4-h session under noise exposure and quiet conditions. The results for performance suggested no clear

Impossible spaces: maximizing natural walking in virtual environments with self-overlapping architecture.

Walking is only possible within immersive virtual environments that fit inside the boundaries of the user's physical workspace. To reduce the severity of the restrictions imposed by limited physical area, we introduce "impossible spaces," a new design mechanic for virtual environments that wish to maximize the size of the virtual environment that can be explored with natural locomotion. Such environments make use of self-overlapping architectural layouts, effectively compressing comparatively large interior environments into smaller physical areas. We conducted two formal user studies to explo
