Vitamin D Deficiency Associated With Cognitive Functioning in Psychotic Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunctions are core features of psychotic disorders with substantial impact on daily functioning. Vitamin D deficien … efined serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] < 25 nmol/L) on key cognitive domains: processing speed, verbal learning, verbal memory, and executive functioning. RESULTS: Vitamin D deficiency was significantly associated with decreased processing speed (ie, Digit Symbol Coding) (t = -2.6, P = .01; total model: adjusted R² = 0.40, F6, 374 = 43.8, P < .001) and decre …

Verbal-spatial IQ discrepancies impact brain activation associated with the resolution of cognitive conflict in children and adolescents.

Verbal-spatial discrepancies are common in healthy individuals and in those with neurodevelopmental disorders associated with cognitive control deficits including: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Non-Verbal Learning Disability, Fragile X, 22q11 deletion, and Turner Syndrome. Previous data from healthy individuals suggest that the magnitude of the difference between verbal IQ (VIQ) and performance IQ (PIQ) scores (the VIQ>PIQ discrepancy) is associated with reduced thickness in frontal and parietal cortices (inferior frontal, anterior cingulate, inferior parietal lobule, and supramarginal gyrus) that…

Characterising neural signatures of successful aging: Electrophysiological correlates of preserved episodic memory in older age.

While aging is associated with a gradual decline in memory, substantial preservation of function is observed in certain individuals and dissecting this heterogeneity is paramount to understanding successful aging. A cohort of elderly individuals were classified according to their level of memory preservation and administered a test of episodic memory in which participants were cued to learn or simply read each word and then to identify previously presented items in a delayed recognition phase. Mathematical modelling revealed that relatively preserved memory function was specifically linked to

The role of the striatum in sentence processing: disentangling syntax from working memory in Huntington's disease.

The role of sub-cortical structures in language processing remains controversial. In particular, it is unclear whether the striatum subserves language-specific processes such as syntax or whether it solely affects language performance via its significant role in executive functioning and/or working memory. Here, in order to address this issue, we attempted to equalize working memory constraints while varying syntactic complexity, to study sentence comprehension in 15 patients with striatal damage, namely Huntington's disease at early stage, and in 15 healthy controls. More particularly, we man

MS vs. HD: can white matter and subcortical gray matter pathology be distinguished neuropsychologically?

This study was conducted to examine the neuropsychological effects of white matter and subcortical gray matter pathology. Nineteen patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), 16 with Huntington's disease (HD), and 17 normal controls (NC) participated. Participants completed the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT), Rotary Pursuit (RP) and Mirror Tracing (MT) tasks, and the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT). The principal findings pertain to a dissociation in procedural memory: on RP, the HD group demonstrated impaired sequence learning compared to the MS group, which performed similarly to the …

[Diagnosis of reading and spelling disorder].

The ICD-10 calls for the use of tables that account for the correlation between intelligence and spelling or reading, respectively (regression model) in the diagnosis of dyslexia. In this paper we discuss the consequences that arise from this recommendation with respect to the interpretation of psychometric tests. In addition, a table is presented that contains the data required to make diagnostic decisions based on the regression model. Furthermore, an expected prevalence rate was calculated using randomized computer data.

Memory and amnesia.

Brain damage can cause several distinct disorders of explicit memory as well as several disorders of implicit memory. Organic amnesia is the best studied explicit memory disorder. It is a syndrome that can be caused by lesions in (a) the medial temporal lobes, (b) the midline diencephalon, or (c) the basal forebrain. It remains unresolved whether one or several functional deficits underlie the syndrome, how these deficits should be characterised, and what is the exact location of the causal lesions. There is good evidence that amnesics encode information normally so their deficit(s) must be of

The relationship of phonological awareness, rapid naming, and verbal memory to severe reading and spelling disability.

The present study examined the relationship of phonological awareness, naming speed, and verbal memory to the scores obtained from five tests assessing word attack, word identification, reading comprehension, and spelling skills in 54 children with severe reading disabilities (48 boys and 6 girls; M age = 9 years, 7 months). Multiple regression analyses indicated that the best predictor of achievement across the five academic tests was the Verbal Comprehension factor from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. Age, socioeconomic status (SES), and externalizing behavior problems

Developmental dyslexia and word retrieval deficits.

Developmental dyslexics, selected on the basis of very slow naming rates on the Rapid Automatic Naming Tasks (RAN), were compared to normal readers on oral language, picture categorization, and reading tasks. Findings indicated that the dyslexics' word retrieval deficits were one symptom of a more generalized, however subtle, oral language deficit which involved both receptive and expressive oral language functioning. The dyslexics' word retrieval problem also seemed chiefly related to language processing and not to deficits in semantic memory as there were no significant differences between d

A comparison of hippocampal pathology in man and other animals.

Bilateral damage to the medial temporal lobe, including the hippocampus, in man is associated with a severe amnesic syndrome. It is still not clear whether the hippocampus (or its output pathways and related target projection sites) is the critical structure in producing this syndrome, especially as more severe learning deficits in animals are found with lesions in the anterior inferotemporal cortex than with hippocampal lesions per se. But the problem of trying to relate memory deficits in man and animals depends on the characterization of the amnesic syndrome itself. It was originally though

Profiles of strengths and weaknesses in dyslexia and other learning difficulties.

A total of 83 children with different special educational needs (SEN) assessments were contrasted with a control group (N = 40) without special needs on measures that aimed to identify potential areas of strengths as well as weaknesses in these SEN groups. Carefully selected groups of dyslexics, dyspraxics, children with specific language difficulties, moderate learning disabilities, attention deficits and emotional/behavioural disorders were assessed on measures of literacy, phonological and verbal skills, non-verbal ability, problem behaviour scales and cognitive interference. A comparison of neuropsychological test profiles of children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and/or learning disorder.

The study compared 8-year-old children with pure attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n = 21), specific learning disorder (LD) (n = 12), and both (ADHD + LD) (n = 27) on a comprehensive set of neuropsychological measures. The tests were mainly derived from a new neuropsychological instrument, the Neuropsychological Assessment of Children. The children with ADHD were specifically impaired in the control and inhibition of impulses; the children with LD were impaired in phonological awareness, verbal memory span, and storytelling, as well as in verbal IQ. Children with both showed all

[Pediatric dysphasia. 1. The concept and clinical aspects].

This survey deals with the early diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental dysphasia, which may prevent the progression of learning and behavior disorders. In the pre-verbal and early verbal stage, the severity of the clinical picture is primarily determined by concomitant motor pathology (motor dysfunction, dysarthria, general and oral dyspraxia) and by receptive pathology (hearing and auditory perception). In the verbal period, linguistic problems start to play a role, and often combine with oral motor symptoms to present a mixed picture. Various language syndromes do not become

Impaired action self-monitoring in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that the process of discriminating between inner and outer experiences underlies auditory hallucinations (AHs). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether discrimination between imagined and performed action (i.e., action self monitoring) differed between schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations (AHs) and those without. METHOD: Twenty-eight schizophrenia patients with AHs, twenty-six patients without AHs, and thirty-four healthy subjects were assessed with an action memory task. Simple actions were presented to the participant verbally

Learning potentiates neurophysiological and behavioral placebo analgesic responses.

Expectation and conditioning are supposed to be the two main psychological mechanisms for inducing a placebo response. Here, we further investigate the effects of both expectation, which was induced by verbal suggestion alone, and conditioning at the level of N1 and N2-P2 components of CO2 laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) and subjective pain reports. Forty-four healthy volunteers were pseudorandomly assigned to one of three experimental groups: Group 1 was tested with verbal suggestion alone, Group 2 was tested with a conditioning procedure, whereby the intensity of painful stimulation was reduc

The role of imageability in noun and verb acquisition in children with Down syndrome and their peers with typical development.

Our main objective was to analyze the role of imageability in relation to the age of acquisition (AoA) of nouns and verbs in Spanish-speaking children with Down syndrome (DS) and their peers with typical development (TD). The AoA of nouns and verbs was determined using the MacArthur-Bates CDIs adapted to the profile of children with DS. The AoA was analyzed using a linear mixed-effect model, including factors of imageability, group, and word class, and controlling for word frequency and word length. This analysis showed that high imaginable and short words were acquired early. Children with DS

Source recognition discriminability impairment in Huntington's versus Alzheimer's disease: Evidence from the CVLT-3.

Research suggests that individuals with Huntington's disease (HD) perform better than individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) on the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) Yes/No Recognition trial. However, those with HD have been shown to have deficits comparable to those with AD on the Source Recognition Discriminability (RD) index (which assesses the ability to distinguish between List A targets and List B distractors), suggesting that HD may involve selective impairment in aspects of yes/no recognition that rely on source memory. However, whether individuals with HD and AD show comparabl…
