Altered monoaminergic levels, spasticity, and balance disability following repetitive blast-induced traumatic brain injury in rats.

Spasticity and balance disability are major complications following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although monoaminergic inputs provide critical adaptive neuromodulations to the motor system, data are not available regarding the levels of monoamines in the brain regions related to motor functions following repetitive blast TBI (bTBI). The objective of this study was to determine if mild, repetitive bTBI results in spasticity/balance deficits and if these are correlated with altered levels of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in the brain regions related to the motor system. Repetitive bT

Wavelet transform of single-trial vestibular short-latency evoked potential reveals temporary reduction in signal detectability and temporal precision following noise exposure.

UNLABELLED: The vestibular short-latency evoked potential (VsEP) reflects the activity of irregular vestibular afferents and their target neurons in the brain stem. Attenuation of trial-averaged VsEP waveforms is widely accepted as an indicator of vestibular dysfunction, however, more quantitative analyses of VsEP waveforms could reveal underlying neural properties of VsEP waveforms. Here, we present a time-frequency analysis of the VsEP with a wavelet transform on a single-trial basis, which allows us to examine trial-by-trial variability in the strength of VsEP waves as well as their tempora

Vestibulo-ocular reflex gain improvements at peak head acceleration and velocity following onset of unilateral vestibular neuritis: Insights into neural compensation mechanisms.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: An acute unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit (aUPVD) due to vestibular neuritis causes deficient yaw axis vestibular ocular reflex (VOR) gains. Using video head impulse tests (vHITs), we examined phasic and tonic velocity gains of the VOR over time to determine if these differed at onset and during subsequent improvement. METHODS: The VOR responses of 61 patients were examined within 5 days of aUPVD onset, and 3 and 7 weeks later using vHIT with mean peak yaw angular velocities of 177°/s (sd 45°/s) and mean peak accelerations of 3660°/s2 (sd 1300°/s2). The phasic vel

An unusual stroke-like clinical presentation of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: acute vestibular syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Vertigo and dizziness are common neurological symptoms in general practice. Most patients have benign peripheral vestibular disorders, but some have dangerous central causes. Recent research has shown that bedside oculomotor examinations accurately discriminate central from peripheral lesions in those with new, acute, continuous vertigo/dizziness with nausea/vomiting, gait unsteadiness, and nystagmus, known as the acute vestibular syndrome. CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old man presented to the emergency department with acute vestibular syndrome for 1 week. The patient had no focal neu

AVP modulation of the vestibular nucleus via V1b receptors potentially contributes to the development of motion sickness in rat.

BACKGROUND: Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is considered to be an etiologic hormone in motion sickness (MS). The present study was designed to investigate whether individual differences in AVP expression in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and in modulation on the vestibular nucleus (VN) are involved in MS. Systemic application or microinjection of AVP into rat VN and rotatory stimulus were used to induce conditioned taste aversion (CTA) to 0.15 % saccharin sodium solution as a model of MS. RESULTS: Intra-VN use of SSR149415, an antagonist of V1b receptors (V1bRs), blunted CTA. AVP inhibited Ca(

Ramsay Hunt syndrome associated with solitary nucleus, spinal trigeminal nucleus and tract, and vestibular nucleus involvement on sequential magnetic resonance imaging.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is an acute peripheral facial nerve paralysis typically accompanied by erythematous vesicular lesions of the auricular skin. The etiology is considered to be geniculate ganglionitis due to reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Encephalitis is a rare but serious complication of VZV reactivation. Clarifying the regional and temporal evolution of the lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) would help with understanding the pathology of the lesion, but this information is lacking in encephalitis with RHS. Therefore, here, we reviewed sequential MR images in t

The Spectrum of Vestibular and Ocular Motor Abnormalities in Thiamine Deficiency.

PURPOSE: The first aim of this review is to summarize recent ocular motor signs in pre-encephalopathy patients with nutritional deficiency at risk of thiamine deficiency. Timely recognition of thiamine depletion in these patients, who may have a normal brain MRI, could lead to appropriate management and prevention of Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) with full recovery. The second aim is to incorporate recent diagnostic testing on the revised WE diagnostic criteria and the identification of patients who may show slow, partial, or no response to treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Selective vulnerability

Purkinje cell responses during visually and vestibularly driven smooth eye movements in mice.

INTRODUCTION: An essential complement to molecular-genetic approaches for analyzing the function of the oculomotor circuitry in mice is an understanding of sensory and motor signal processing in the circuit. Although there has been extensive analysis of the signals carried by neurons in the oculomotor circuits of species, such as monkeys, rabbits and goldfish, relatively little in vivo physiology has been done in the oculomotor circuitry of mice. We analyzed the contribution of vestibular and nonvestibular signals to the responses of individual Purkinje cells in the cerebellar flocculus of mic

Model approach to neurological variants of visuo-spatial neglect.

Neglect is a neurological disorder of spatial attention with reduced awareness of visual stimuli in the hemifield contralateral to an acute temporo-parietal lesion mainly of the right hemisphere. There is a close association of multisensory orientation centers (MSO) and vestibular tonus imbalance. A lesion of the dominant right MSO causes a left-sided neglect due to a lack of ipsilateral activation of the visual cortex, which is further enhanced by increasing inhibition from the contralateral visual cortex. The nondominant MSO in the left hemisphere might be involved in the manifestation of th

Nitric oxide synthase in the frog cerebellum: response of Purkinje neurons to unilateral eighth nerve transection.

When vestibular damage occurs, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression in rat cerebellar flocculus is affected. Since compensation for postural symptoms occurs and Purkinje cells play an important role in movement coordination and motor learning, we analyzed in situ the induction of NOS in the Purkinje cell population of the cerebellum (corpus cerebelli) of frog after unilateral transection of the eighth statoacoustic nerve to gain insight into the role of NO in neural plasticity after injury. Three days after neurectomy, the early effects induced NADPH diaphorase reactivity in most of the Purk

Transient high altitude neurological dysfunction: an origin in the temporoparietal cortex.

This case report describes three separate episodes of isolated ataxia, hallucinations of being accompanied by another person, and bilateral dressing apraxia occurring in a single individual without prior warning signs. These symptoms are attributable to disruption of vestibular processing in the temporoparietal cortex or associated limbic structures. Neurological dysfunction at high altitude is usually ascribed to high altitude cerebral edema or acute mountain sickness. However, transient neurological symptoms occur abruptly at more extreme altitudes, often following vigorous exertion, without

Pathology of Madras type of motor neuron disease (MMND)--a histological and immunohistochemical study.

A neuropathological report of Madras type of motor neuron disease (MMND) is presented and the differences from other forms of MND are discussed. An 18-year-old girl presented with nerve deafness and slowly progressive bulbo-spinal muscular atrophy, characteristic of MMND. Post-mortem examination of the spinal cord showed a severe loss of anterior horn cells, prominent dilatation of vessels, diffuse, but sparse sprinkling of microglial cells and lymphocytes, and demyelination and sclerosis of the ventrolateral columns. Neuronal depletion and marked gliosis was noted in the cochlear nucleus on b

Role of visuo-vestibular interaction in pathological ocular oscillation: new model and control system analysis.

Control system engineering is a relatively newer field of engineering which is directly applicable to performance analysis of neuronal networks. Visuo-vestibular interaction (VVI) represents a neuronal control system which has most benefited from such analysis. In this paper, we present a new model of VVI derived from our previously reported model by adding cortical pursuit feedback. Mathematical analysis of abnormal eye oscillations and stability analysis of the VVI system provided us with a plausible hypothesis that the pathological ocular oscillations seen in oculopalatal myoclonus and see-

Procedures for restoring vestibular disorders.

This paper will discuss therapeutic possibilities for disorders of the vestibular organs and the neurons involved, which confront ENT clinicians in everyday practice. Treatment of such disorders can be tackled either symptomatically or causally. The possible strategies for restoring the body's vestibular sense, visual function and co-ordination include medication, as well as physical and surgical procedures. Prophylactic or preventive measures are possible in some disorders which involve vertigo (bilateral vestibulopathy, kinetosis, height vertigo, vestibular disorders when diving (Tables 1 (T

Vestibular nucleus stimulation for ameliorating locomotor dynamics in a Parkinsonian mouse model.

Postural and locomotor dysfunction represent axial symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), which remain poorly treated by medication and deep brain stimulation. Whilst non-invasive neuromodulation of the vestibular system via the vestibular nucleus complex (VNC) offers a novel therapeutic avenue, the underlying circuits are still poorly characterized. Here we show that the mouse VNC feeds extensive Vglut2-defined projections into striato-thalamo-subthalamic and caudal medulla motor hubs and receives substantial input from the sensorimotor cortex. Optogenetic activation of excitatory VNC neurons

Close Packing of Cells in Vestibular Epithelia Supports Local Electrical Potentials that Reduce Latency of Action Potential Generation.

In the vestibular system, upon transduction of head motion, ionic currents from type I sensory hair cells alter [K+] and electrical potentials in an extended synaptic cleft formed by a calyx terminal of the associated afferent neuron. During excitatory stimuli, these changes in turn modulate post-synaptic currents across the calyx inner face to depolarize the afferent and initiate action potentials. Within the tightly packed columnar vestibular sensory epithelium, electrical currents from the hair cell and calyx must also traverse non-synaptic extracellular spaces and generate local extracellu
