OBJECTIVE: To determine normal caloric responses and test-retest correlations of caloric responses in a group of otologically normal persons using an open-loop caloric irrigation system.
STUDY DESIGN: An open-loop bithermal caloric irrigator was used to obtain maximum slow component speed caloric responses of healthy young persons with a repeat caloric test occurring- 1 week later.
SETTING: The caloric examination took place in a university speech and hearing clinic.

OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristics of Meniere's disease in aircrew and its possible influence on space flight.
METHOD: Case studies of Meniere's disease were carried out in 22 pilots.
RESULT: There were vertigo (n=22), tinnitus (n=21), abnormal hearing (n=19) and abnormal vestibular function (n=11) in 22 pilots.
CONCLUSION: Meniere's disease may hazard the flying in aviation or space and flying may further damage the inner ears of patients with Meniere's disease.

The etiopathogenesis of Menière's disease has remained controversial since the early 1900s. Many investigators have studied the histopathology of the inner ear in patients with this disorder. Three basic pathologic mechanisms have emerged: fibrosis of the endolymphatic sac and vestibular epithelia, altered glycoprotein metabolism, and inner ear viral infection. This article reviews the current understanding of these three basic pathologic processes.

Space motion sickness was not reported during the first Apollo missions; however, since Apollo 8 through the current Shuttle and Skylab missions, approximately 50% of the crewmembers have experienced instances of space motion sickness. One of NASA's efforts to resolve the space adaptation syndrome is to model the vestibular response for both basic knowledge and as a possible predictor of an individual's susceptibility to the disorder. This report describes a method to analyze the vestibular system when subjected to a pseudorandom angular velocity input.

The actual knowledge of the thresholds of stimulation of the otolith organ is reviewed. A vestibular stimulus unknown until now with a value transgressing the threshold has been found. This gravitational force is due to the gravitation of the sun and is caused by the fact that the spacecraft is moving at a different speed with respect to the sun on one side of the orbit than on the other. The problems of vestibular experiments in space and the connection with space motion sickness due to a field of microgravitation in orbiting spacecrafts is discussed.

The equilibrium function of 80 deaf children with congenital rubella syndrome, aged 12, was examined by the caloric and righting reflex tests. Of these 80 children, 24 (30%) had vestibular hypofunction, 6 (7.5%) were suspect, and the remaining 50 (62.5%) were normal. Of all 160 ears tested, vestibular hypofunction was proven in 21.3%, suspect in 5.6%, and normal in the rest.
