Vibratory stimulation. Part III. Possible applications of vibration in treatment of motor dysfunctions.

Vibratory stimulation holds promise of becoming a useful therapeutic tool in the treatment of motor disorders. The benefits of vibratory treatment are predictable on the basis of current knowledge about the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the motor effects of vibration. Actual results of vibratory treatment are described for patients with a wide variety of motor disorders. The importance of attending to practical details such as the proper selection of both stimulus parameters and patients is stressed. Specific recommendations are offered for learning to use vibratory stimulation effe…

Vibration-Based Numerical and Experimental Analysis on Delamination Damage Identification for Composite Laminates.

Composite laminates possess excellent specific mechanical performance and are widely adopted in aerospace, rail transit and national defense industries, whereas interlayer delamination, as a typical concealed damage, seriously threatens structural safety. Most existing vibration-based delamination detection algorithms rely on intact structure baseline data, which restricts their practical engineering application. Aiming at this limitation, this paper investigates two baseline-free delamination identification approaches combining modal shape curvature and uniform load surface (ULS) curvature fo…

Intercostal electromyographic responses to multi-site chest wall vibration at an optimal frequency.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency mechanical vibration facilitates respiratory muscle activity via muscle spindle afferents. Although synchronised multi-site chest wall vibration enhances ventilation, the associated intercostal electromyographic (EMG) responses and their contribution to ventilatory changes remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of multi-site chest wall vibration on intercostal muscle activation and ventilation in healthy adults. METHODS: Twenty healthy adults underwent phase-synchronised chest wall vibration delivered to four or eight intercostal sites during inspiratio…

Sex differences in biodynamic response to seated whole-body vibration: A scoping review.

Seated whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure increases musculoskeletal injury (MSKI) risk, particularly for females. This review synthesizes the literature evidence for sex-differences in biodynamic response (BR) to seated WBV. Studies were included if they reported one or more BR outcomes, included both males and females, and exposed participants to seated WBV. Twenty-six studies met the inclusion criteria, fourteen of which reported significant sex-differences in one or more BR outcome(s) under various vibration and seating conditions. Experimental and data analysis methods between studies wer…

Design of a Multistable Cantilever Piezoelectric Vibration Energy Harvester with Nonlinear Force Customization.

Multistable energy harvesters have attracted considerable attention due to their shallow potential wells, which facilitate low-energy inter- … wer starting frequency for energy harvesting. The proposed method enables the design of multistable vibration energy harvesters without increasing structural complexity with the number of equilibrium points, which is of great significance for optimizing multistable vibration energy harvesters.

Vibration isolation and low-frequency tracking based on magnetic levitation with composite control.

In spacecraft, precision equipment is severely affected by vibration excitation generated by rotor imbalance in the Control Moment Gyroscope (CMG), which is the core actuator for low-frequency attitude adjustments. Active vibration isolation (AVI) has been extensively studied by many scholars. However, traditional actuators suffer from contact friction and response delay; feedback and feedforward control alone have performance bottlenecks. As a result, the low-frequency tracking and mid-frequency isolation performance of CMG AVI are severely limited. Therefore, this paper proposes a magnetic l…

Toward Pristine Return: Probabilistic Sample Response Modeling of Vibration Sensing for Planetary Samples.

Planetary sample return missions can impose extreme mechanical forces on both spacecraft and the returned samples collected from a planetary surface that they contain. The chain of custody phases from entry/descent/landing to curation each present distinct vibration, shock, and dynamic loads that may compromise sample integrity. Interplanetary sample return missions, from the Apollo program to Stardust, Hayabusa, Hayabusa2, and OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer), have refined capsule design to ensure sample integrity. While mu…

Aircraft-level vibration effects on hyperfine laser locks for Rydberg electric-field sensing.

We present a subsystem-isolated study of aircraft-level vibration coupling to a hyperfine laser lock and its propagation to a two-photon Rydberg superheterodyne RF sensor. Here, the probe laser is stabilized to an atomic hyperfine transition, and RF electric fields are detected via a Rydberg-atom superheterodyne process that down-converts the signal to an optical readout. A compact Doppler-free saturated-absorption spectroscopy (SAS) module probing the 87Rb5S1/2→5P3/2 hyperfine manifold was driven to NASA DC-8 in-flight vibration levels (<2kHz) to investigate the effects of vibration on the st…

Effects of Low Magnitude Vibration on Mesenchymal Stem Cell Osteogenic Potential and Phenotype.

Mechanical stimulation, particularly low magnitude vibration (LMV), has been shown to increase bone mineral density (BMD) in vivo and the osteogenic potential of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs). However, much remains unknown about its mechanisms of action and effects on cell phenotype. To better understand this phenomenon, we subjected BM-MSCs cultures to in vitro LMV at 32-37 Hz, 0.3-0.4 g for 20 minutes every day. Gene and protein expression, calcium deposition, actin structure, and cytokine/growth factor secretion were assessed. Additionally, we investigated the role of…

Vibration-Induced Stabilization of Lithium Anodes: Synergistic Effects of Morphological and SEI Evolution.

Lithium metal is a highly attractive anode material for next-generation energy storage systems due to its extremely high energy density and low redox potential. Despite the growing interest in lithium metal batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), the effect of mechanical vibrations-a common condition in automotive environments-on lithium metal anodes has rarely received attention. In this study, the impact of linear shear vibration on Li metal anodes is investigated and the resulting electrochemical behavior is analyzed. Cells exposed to horizontal vibration exhibited a thinner Li electrodeposi…

Beyond the numbers: rethinking evidence in pooled analyses of hand-arm vibration syndrome.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) continues to weigh heavily on workers’ health, yet how we study it often limits what we learn. Bovenzi et al. make an important contribution by pooling Italian datasets, but the heavy reliance on cross-sectional designs restricts causal insight. Inconsistent exposure metrics, varied outcome definitions, and limited adjustment for confounders risk blurring the true picture of vibration-related harm. The continued use of the ISO 5349-1 standard, despite questions about its accuracy, further complicates interpretation. Perhaps most concerning is the underreprese…

Supercoiled Superelastic Metallic Metamaterials for High Energy Density and Heavy-Duty Vibration Mitigation.

Metallic metamaterials that combine superelasticity, high energy density (enthalpy), and heavy load-bearing capacity have been long sought for applications in energy absorption, impact protection, and vibration control. However, achieving this combination remains elusive due to limitations of material strength and design paradigm. Here, inspired by DNA supercoiling, we report all-metallic metamaterials composed of helices that undergo hierarchical twist-buckling under compression. This supercoiled geometry synergistically enhances load resistance and energy storage while mitigating stress conc…

Vibration tailored to jawbone density with near-infrared light expedites orthodontic tooth movement.

Malocclusion, a prevalent oral health issue, requires prolonged orthodontic treatment due to inefficiency of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Non-invasive physical stimulation has been increasingly applied to accelerate OTM. This study investigated how age-related variations in jawbone density affect the efficacy of vibration and near-infrared (NIR) light in accelerating OTM. Human computed tomography (CT) data and rat models revealed higher jawbone density in young adults than in adolescents. A ten-channel vibration-light integrated platform (VLIP) was developed to precisely control the stim…
