Juvenile retinal detachment.

We feel that the management of juvenile retinal detachment can best be improved by earlier diagnosis. School vision-screening tests should be encouraged, and long-term followup of patients with high myopia, aphakia, and retrolental fibroplasia should be practiced. The peripheral retina should be examined in all traumatized eyes since delayed detachment is the rule. When retinal breaks are found in high-risk eyes, in our opinion, prophylactic treatment is indicated.

Vision Screening and Vision Loss-Related Conditions Among American Indian or Alaska Native Children.

IMPORTANCE: Early vision screening plays a critical role in detecting and treating vision loss-related conditions in children. Despite this, few studies have examined pediatric vision screening rates alongside vision health outcomes using large primary care electronic health record (EHR) datasets. OBJECTIVE: To measure annual rates of vision screening at well-child care (WCC) visits and the prevalence of vision loss-related conditions among children aged 3 to 17 years, focusing on American Indian or Alaska Native children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used pa

Breaking down barriers to accessing dementia-friendly eyecare.

BackgroundPeople living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias experience barriers to accessing routine primary eyecare, increasing risk of preventable sight loss. One barrier is a negative experience with previous eye tests (defined as a comprehensive eye examination involving multiple tests to assess visual function and eye health). We explored eye test experiences for people with dementia and identified improvements. Supporting people with dementia to keep up regular eye tests may reduce risk of preventable sight loss, thereby supporting wellbeing and independence.ObjectiveFrom the

Metrics of concussion-related vision disorders among children and adolescents with persisting post-concussive symptoms using an objective eye tracking device.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of concussion-related vision disorders (CRVDs) may improve outcomes by enabling earlier management, referral, and treatment. Objective eye tracking may provide additional data to support the diagnose of CRVDs. The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of objective infrared eye tracking in identifying CRVDs among adolescents experiencing persisting post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) more than 28 days after injury. METHODS: This was a prospective study of adolescents with PPCS evaluated with visio-vestibular examination (VVE), comprehensive vision exam

Development of an experimental model for ocular toxicity screening in Zebrafish.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the efficacy of a novel experimental model for exploring visual function using a contrast-optomotor response (C-OMR) assay made by applying the contrast sensitivity test to the OMR assay in zebrafish. METHODS: Zebrafish larvae were treated with 0 (control), 5, 10, or 15 μM gentamicin and digoxin for 24 h at four days post-fertilization (dpf). Zebrafish larvae were assessed using the C-OMR assay with graded contrast gray-white stripes at 5 dpf, and the results were expressed as the percentage of larvae that finished swimming for 30 s (n = 20 per each group). The same

Frequency of Visual Deficits in Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

IMPORTANCE: Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a specific learning disability of neurobiological origin whose core cognitive deficit is widely believed to involve language (phonological) processing. Although reading is also a visual task, the potential role of vision in DD has been controversial, and little is known about the integrity of visual function in individuals with DD. OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of visual deficits (specifically vergence, accommodation, and ocular motor tracking) in children with DD compared with a control group of typically developing readers. Assessment of novel binocular colour, motion and contrast tests in glaucoma.

The effects of glaucoma on binocular visual sensitivity for the detection of various stimulus attributes are investigated at the fovea and in four paracentral retinal regions. The study employed a number of visual stimuli designed to isolate the processing of various stimulus attributes. We measured absolute contrast detection thresholds and functional contrast sensitivity by using Landolt ring stimuli. This psychophysical Landolt C-based contrast test of detection and gap discrimination allowed us to test parafoveally at 6 ° from fixation and foveally by employing interleaved testing location

Major review: The underutilization of vision screening (for amblyopia, optical anomalies and strabismus) among preschool age children.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 80% of preschool age children never get an eye examination (1). Many "back to school" physical exams do not test for common vision disorders. Untreated eye and vision problems can interfere with most life experiences. The prevalence of undetected vision problems among preschool age children is estimated to be 5% to 10% (2). Failure to detect visual impairment early may have a permanent effect on long term vision outcomes, education achievement, and self esteem (3). The most common vision disorders among children are strabismus, amblyopia and optical problems impairing visual

An optical intervention for visual hallucinations associated with visual impairment and dementia in elderly patients.

Onset of visual hallucinations in elderly individuals is a widespread problem with an elusive etiology. Many patients with this problem have visual and cognitive deficits. Intervention with optical aids has not been investigated as a means of treating these hallucinations. The authors report 3 cases in which optical aids were evaluated for efficacy in reducing frequency of visual hallucinations in elderly patients with dementia and visual deficits.

Ocular findings in Down's syndrome.

This communication presents the ocular findings in 30 patients with Down's syndrome residing in a central institution for the mentally retarded. The findings have been compared to those in matched controls consisting of mentally retarded people from the same institution. The ocular status in patients with Down's syndrome has been extensively studied previously, and to a large extent, findings in previous materials were confirmed. However, in this institution, which consisted of adult patients only, some unusual findings have also been made: nine of the 30 patients had keratoconus, which is a r

Contrast sensitivity in visually impaired children.

Spatial contrast sensitivity may decrease differently at different spatial frequencies when vision is impaired. Patients with central acidoma may have normal or decreased sensitivity at low spatial frequencies, their Snellen acuity often is lower than grating acuity estimated on the basis of contrast sensitivity values. In retinitis pigmentosa contrast sensitivity may decrease at the low spatial frequencies already in the early teens. Because the ability to discern low contrasts is important in daily living, spatial contrast sensitivity measurements should become a part of clinical evaluation
