Context-specific habituation of the freezing response in newborn chicks.

Previous studies have found that in mature animals habituation is context-specific in some species but not in others. Given the mixed evidence present in the literature, we decided to explore whether habituation is context-specific in newborn chicks. The results showed that 3 days after hatching, chicks were capable of using global contextual information to rapidly habituate their freezing response to a series of sudden acoustic stimuli. Our study is the 1st to show context-specific habituation in this avian species, a result in agreement with those of previous findings in adult male zebra fin

Description of a new species of Microhyla from Bali, Indonesia (Amphibia, Anura).

We describe a microhylid frog from Bali, Indonesia as a new species, Microhyla orientalis sp. nov. It belongs to the M. achatina group and is close to M. mantheyi, M. malang, and M. borneensis. It is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: small size (adult males about 16-17 mm in SVL); a faint vertebral stripe present; a black lateral stripe from behind eye to half length of trunk; snout rounded in profile; eyelid without supraciliary spines; first finger less than one-fifth of third; tips of three outer fingers weakly dilated, forming weak disks, dorsal

The synthetic progestogen, Levonorgestrel, but not natural progesterone, affects male mate calling behavior of Xenopus laevis.

Worldwide, more than 100 million women use hormonal contraceptives, which act through progestogenic modes of action. These man-made hormones can enter the aquatic environment as they are excreted via feces and urine. Xeno-progestins are able to interfere with the endocrine system of female aquatic vertebrates impairing oogenesis and reproduction. However, data on progestogenic effects on reproductive behavior of male aquatic vertebrates are lacking. To evaluate whether progestins affect the mating behavior of male Xenopus laevis, we exposed male frogs to three environmentally relevant concentr

Character displacement from the receiver's perspective: species and mate recognition despite convergent signals in suboscine birds.

Many social animals use long-distance signals to attract mates and defend territories. They face the twin challenges of discriminating between species to identify conspecific mates, and between individuals to recognize collaborators and competitors. It is therefore often assumed that long-distance signals are under strong selection for species-specificity and individual distinctiveness, and that this will drive character displacement when closely related species meet, particularly in noisy environments. However, the occurrence of signal stereotypy and convergence in rainforest species seems to

Right hemisphere dominance for emotion processing in baboons.

Asymmetries of emotional facial expressions in humans offer reliable indexes to infer brain lateralization and mostly revealed right hemisphere dominance. Studies concerned with oro-facial asymmetries in nonhuman primates largely showed a left-sided asymmetry in chimpanzees, marmosets and macaques. The presence of asymmetrical oro-facial productions was assessed in Olive baboons in order to determine the functional cerebral asymmetries. Two affiliative behaviors (lipsmack, copulation call) and two agonistic ones (screeching, eyebrow-raising) were recorded. For screeching, a strong and signific

Variability of the approach phase of landing echolocating Greater Mouse-eared bats.

The approach phase of landing vespertilionid bats ends with a group of calls, which either consists of buzz I alone or buzz I and buzz II. To understand the possible role of buzz II, we trained Myotis myotis to land on a vertical grid, and compared the flight and echolocation behavior during approach in trials with and without buzz II. During the approach, we did not find any differences in the echolocation behavior until the end of buzz I which indicated whether buzz II was emitted or not. However, bats flying from the periphery of the flight channel, such that they had to make a small turn a

Autumnal territorial aggression is independent of plasma testosterone in mockingbirds.

Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) show intense territorial activity in the autumn as newcomers attempt to establish space within resident populations. Examination of autumnal territorial behavior showed that unmated males sing more and engage in more territorial fights than mated males. Newcomers that have just acquired space also sing more and show more territorial fights than birds resident to the population for at least one prior season. Among established residents, the average number of territorial fights was greater in birds that shared more territory boundaries with new residents. Radioim

Context-Dependent Reactive Antipredator Behavior of Chacma Baboons (Papio ursinus griseipes) Amidst Predator Recovery.

Predation is a driving force in prey ecology and evolution, and primates exhibit diverse antipredator strategies for minimizing risk. Because these behaviors can be costly, individuals balance costs and benefits when responding to perceived threats. The cognitive capacity and behavioral plasticity of baboons make them an ideal taxon for studying the context-dependent variation in antipredator strategies. We used an autonomous, motion-activated playback experiment to study the behavioral responses of chacma baboons (Papio ursinus griseipes) to simulated predator encounters in Gorongosa National

Decoding the functional adaptation of animal echolocation: a global macroevolutionary analysis.

Echolocating animals actively emit pulses of ultrasound and perceive acoustic reflections to determine the position of objects in dark, often three-dimensional spaces. Echolocation specificity thus depends on the properties of the calls emitted, such as frequency, duration, and call "shape", and how this ultrasound is modulated, reflected, received, and interpreted. Currently, however, there is no coherent synthesis explaining the functional adaptation of ultrasonic call design across echolocating species. To address this, here we provide the first comprehensive global macroevolutionary analys

Prenatal acoustic communication triggers adaptive vascular programming in the developing avian brain.

Developmental plasticity allows organisms to adjust their phenotypes to match environmental conditions, but how sensory cues program specific physiological systems remains poorly understood. In Australian zebra finches, incubating parents emit heat calls during extreme temperatures, and embryos exposed to these acoustic signals develop enhanced thermal tolerance and altered growth trajectories as adults, a striking example of anticipatory programming. We hypothesized that heat call exposure alters embryonic hypothalamic gene expression, given this brain region's central role in integrating env

Dynamic upper vocal tract articulations during zebra finch song - acoustic effects and independence of instantaneous auditory feedback.

In birds, the sound generated in the syrinx is modified by upper vocal tract filter properties prior to being emitted. Filtering of upper harmonics, for example, allows birds to produce tonal sounds. The main dynamic filter component is the oropharyngeal-esophageal cavity (OEC), whose volume can be adjusted to track the fundamental frequency of modulated sounds. It is less well understood how birds that use harmonically rich sounds, such as the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata), engage upper vocal tract structures to produce the complex spectral composition of their vocalizations. Furthermore,

Effect of butorphanol in combination with xylazine during castration of calves: A randomised trial under field conditions.

BACKGROUND: In horses, cats and dogs, the opioid butorphanol has been proven effective in management of visceral pain and for peri- and postoperative pain relief. The aim of this study was to evaluate physiological responses and indicators of noxious stimuli when adding butorphanol to xylazine for sedation of bull calves during surgical castration. METHODS: In total, 54 bull calves were randomly assigned to a control group sedated with only xylazine and a treatment group sedated with the addition of butorphanol prior to castration. Observation of physiological responses by blinded observers f

Representing the dynamics of natural marmoset vocal behaviors in frontal cortex.

Here, we tested the respective contributions of primate premotor and prefrontal cortex to support vocal behavior. We applied a model-based generalized linear model (GLM) analysis that better accounts for the inherent variance in natural, continuous behaviors to characterize the activity of neurons throughout the frontal cortex as freely moving marmosets engaged in conversational exchanges. While analyses revealed functional clusters of neural activity related to the different processes involved in the vocal behavior, these clusters did not map to subfields of prefrontal or premotor cortex, as

Relationship between acoustic traits of protesting cries of domestic kittens (Felis catus) and their individual chances for survival.

Domestic cat (Felis catus) mothers may rely on offspring cries to allocate resources in use of individuals with greater chances for survival and sacrifice the weak ones in case of impossibility to raise the entire large litter. Potential victims of this maternal strategy can enhance their chances of survival, by producing vocalizations with traits mimicking those of higher-quality offspring. We compared acoustic traits of 4990 cries produced during blood sampling by 57 two-week-old captive feral kittens (28 males, 29 females); 47 of them survived to 90 days of age and 10 died by reasons not re

Crocodile perception of distress in hominid baby cries.

It is generally argued that distress vocalizations, a common modality for alerting conspecifics across a wide range of terrestrial vertebrates, share acoustic features that allow heterospecific communication. Yet studies suggest that the acoustic traits used to decode distress may vary between species, leading to decoding errors. Here we found through playback experiments that Nile crocodiles are attracted to infant hominid cries (bonobo, chimpanzee and human), and that the intensity of crocodile response depends critically on a set of specific acoustic features (mainly deterministic chaos, ha

Changes in ultrasonic vocalizations after unilateral cerebral ischemia in a rat stroke model.

Stroke frequently results in communication impairments that negatively impact quality of life and overall recovery, yet the biological mechanisms underlying these changes are not well understood. Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in rodent models of disease and aging have been used to improve our understanding of the biological mechanisms that underlie vocal deficits and their response to interventions. Changes in USVs after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in mice have been reported, yet rat models have significant anatomical and behavioral advantages over mice, including the ability to

Trigeminal neuropathic pain reduces 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations in rats, which are restored by analgesic drugs.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a severe form of neuropathic pain frequently associated with anxiety. The chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-ION) of rodents is a well-established model to study sensory alterations related to TN. However, few studies have addressed the emotional component of pain, which is fundamental to increase its translational capability. Emission of ultrasonic vocalization (USV) is considered a reliable measure of the emotional state of rats. Rats emit 50-kHz USVs in social and appetitive situations, whereas 22-kHz USVs may index a negative state. Stud

Diazepam attenuates the effects of cocaine on locomotion, 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations and phasic dopamine in the nucleus accumbens of rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Currently, there is no effective drug to treat cocaine-use disorder, which affects millions of people worldwide. Benzodiazepines are potential therapeutic candidates, as microdialysis and voltammetry studies have shown that they can decrease dopamine concentrations in the nucleus accumbens of rodents and block the increase in dopamine levels and appetitive 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) induced by amphetamine in rats. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Here, we tested whether administration of 2.5-mg·kg-1 diazepam (i.p.) in adult male rats could block the effects of 20-mg·

Microstimulation in Different Parts of the Periaqueductal Gray Generates Different Types of Vocalizations in the Cat.

In the cat four different types of vocalization, mews, howls, cries, and hisses were generated by microstimulation in different parts of the periaqueductal gray (PAG). While mews imply positive vocal expressions, howls, hisses, and cries represent negative vocal expressions. In the intermediate PAG, mews were generated in the lateral column, howls, and hisses in the ventrolateral column. Cries were generated in two other regions, the lateral column of the rostral PAG and the ventrolateral column of the caudal PAG. In order to define the specific motor patterns of the mews, howls, and cries, th

Sexually-dimorphic expression of tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the brain of a vocal teleost fish (Porichthys notatus).

Vocal communication has emerged as a powerful model for the study of neural mechanisms of social behavior. Modulatory neurochemicals postulated to play a central role in social behavior, related to motivation, arousal, incentive and reward, include the catecholamines, particularly dopamine and noradrenaline. Many questions remain regarding the functional mechanisms by which these modulators interact with sensory and motor systems. Here, we begin to address these questions in a model system for vocal and social behavior, the plainfin midshipman fish (Porichthys notatus). We mapped the distribut
