The effect of sodium thiosulfate dechlorination on fecal indicator bacteria enumeration: laboratory and field data.

In microbiological water quality testing, sample dechlorination with sodium thiosulfate is recommended to ensure that results accurately reflect the water quality at sample collection. Nevertheless, monitoring institutions in low-resource settings do not always dechlorinate samples, and there is limited research describing how this practice impacts drinking water quality results. The effect of dechlorination on indicator bacteria counts was evaluated by spiking laboratory water with five Escherichia coli (E. coli) concentrations (104-108 CFU/100 mL), chlorinating at six doses (0-0.6 mg/L), hol

Removing Pb2+ ions from aqueous solution with freshwater cyanobacteria: Combined adsorption and intracellular precipitation.

This study investigated the removal of lead ions (Pb2+) from aqueous solutions by two freshwater cyanobacteria with distinct cellular inclusions: Synechococcus elongatus FACHB-410, which is rich in polyphosphate (polyP), and Cyanothece sp. PCC 7425, containing both polyP and amorphous calcium carbonate (iACC). Both strains were exposed to Pb2+ concentrations ranging from 1 to 50 mg/L and demonstrated high removal efficiencies exceeding 92%. The removal mechanism involved not only adsorption onto cell surfaces but also significant intracellular precipitation. The proportion of intracellular pre

Towards optimizing short-chained PFCA esterification in water.

Short-chained perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) are persistent, mobile aqueous contaminants which are challenging to treat. Improved treatment technologies are necessary to reduce rising short-chain PFCA emissions from high-concentration industrial point sources. We recently demonstrated that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a long-chain PFCA, undergoes chemical transformation to an insoluble ester through a reaction with decanol within spontaneously formed emulsions, (self)driving phase separation and removal from the aqueous phase. Building on this preliminary finding, here we expand the ester

Preparation of starch fumaropimarate and its efficient removal of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride from water.

Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is difficult to degrade in the environment. Residual CIP in water poses risks to ecosystems and human health, as it readily induces antibiotic resistance genes. Therefore, efficient and renewable adsorbents are urgently needed to mitigate CIP pollution. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of fumaropimarate starch (FPS), an adsorbent derived from starch and fumaropimaric acid, and evaluate its performance in removing CIP from water. The effects of adsorbent dosage, solution pH, temperature, initial concentrat

Tunable wettability of Chitosan-Biochar composites for Oil-Water separation and noble metal recovery.

As wastewater discharge issues in the petrochemical industry become increasingly severe, billions of tons of wastewater containing emulsified oil and trace platinum group metals (PGMs) is discharged annually, causing significant environmental pollution and resource loss. To address this challenge, biomass resources have been extensively studied for conversion into biochar via pyrolysis as an adsorbent material for wastewater treatment. Despite biochar's abundant availability and low cost, its limited specific surface area and functional groups constrain treatment efficiency. In recent years, r

Microbes as Resources to Remove PPCPs and Improve Water Quality.

The inadequate removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) by traditional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) poses a significant environmental and public health challenge. Residual PPCPs find their way into aquatic ecosystems, leading to bioaccumulation in aquatic biota, the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and contamination of both water sources and vegetables. These persistent pollutants can have negative effects on human health, ranging from antibiotic resistance development to endocrine disruption. To mitigate these risks, there is a growing interest

Core-shell Ca-alginate beads formed via inverse-gelation technique for the enhanced removal of lead(II) from aqueous solution.

Calcium-alginate (Ca-alginate) beads immobilizing various functional materials have demonstrated excellent Pb(II) adsorption in wastewater systems. Nonetheless, the immobilization mostly involves an external gelation technique, limiting the diffusion of targeted pollutants to the beads' inner region. This study prepared Ca-alginate beads with a distinctive core-shell, immobilizing different functional materials via an inverse gelation technique, to remove lead(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Fe2O3 nanoparticles were immobilized within the core and carbonaceous materials were immobilized in th

A Comprehensive Strategy for Stepwise Design of a Lab PROTOTYPE for the Removal of Emerging Contaminants in Water Using Cyclodextrin Polymers as Adsorbent Material.

The significant environmental issue of water pollution caused by emerging contaminants underscores the imperative for developing novel cleanup methods that are efficient, economically viable, and that are intended to operate at high capacity and under continuous flows at the industrial scale. This study shows the results of the operational design to build a prototype for the retention at lab scale of pollutant residues in water by using as adsorbent material, insoluble polymers prepared by β-cyclodextrin and epichlorohydrin as a cross-linking agent. Laboratory in-batch tests were run to find o

Bottom-up synthesis of a sulfhydryl-modified heteroporous covalent organic framework for ultrafast removal of trace Hg(Ⅱ) from water.

The development of functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is crucial in expanding their potential for removing toxic heavy metals from drinking water. Here, a new sulfhydryl-modified heteroporous COF (COFDBD-BTA) was prepared using a "bottom-up" approach in which a direct amine-aldehyde dehydration condensation between 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol dihydrochloride (DBD) and [1,1'-biphenyl]-3,3',5,5'-tetracarbaldehyde (BTA) was occurred. The COFDBD-BTA featured a hexagonal kagome (kgm) structure and a sheet-like morphology. Notably, COFDBD-BTA contained densely S atoms that provided

Recent advances of MXene@MOF composites for catalytic water splitting and wastewater treatment approaches.

MXenes are a group of 2D material which have been derived from the layered transition metal nitrides and carbides and have the characteristics like electrical conductivity, high surface area and variable surface chemical composition. Self-assembly of clusters/metal ions and organic linkers forms metal organic framework (MOF). Their advantages of ultrahigh porosity, highly exposed active sites and many pore architectures have garnered them a lot of attention. But poor conductivity and instability plague several conventional MOF. To address the issue, MOF can be linked with MXenes that have rich

High efficiency removal of organic and inorganic iodine with ferrate[Fe(VI)] through oxidation and adsorption.

I- is a halogen species existing in natural waters, and the transformation of organic and inorganic iodine in natural and artificial processes would impact the quality of drinking water. Herein, it was found that Fe(VI) could oxidize organic and inorganic iodine to IO3-and simultaneously remove the resulted IO3- through Fe(III) particles. For the river water, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent, and shale gas wastewater treated by 5 mg/L of Fe(VI) (as Fe), around 63 %, 55 % and 71 % of total iodine (total-I) had been removed within 10 min, respectively. Fe(VI) was superior to coagulants

Algae impacted drinking water: Does switching to chloramination produce safer drinking water?

Harmful algal (cyanobacterial) blooms (HABs) are increasing throughout the world. HABs can be a direct source of toxins in freshwater sources, and associated algal organic matter (AOM) can act as precursors for the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water. This study investigated the impacts of algae on DBP formation using treatment with chloramine, which has become a popular disinfectant in the U.S. and in several other countries because it can significantly lower the levels of regulated DBPs formed. Controlled laboratory chloraminations were conducted using live field-c

The effect of metformin and drinking water quality variation on haloacetamide formation during chlor(am)ination of acetaminophen.

Acetaminophen (Apap) is widely used and is known to form toxic haloacetamides (HAcAms) during chlorination. Metformin (Met) is a typical medication with usage much higher than that of Apap and its ubiquitous presence in the environment is known. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Met which contains multiple amino groups potentially joining reactions and different chlorination methods on HAcAm formation from Apap. In addition, a major drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) using the largest river in southern Taiwan was sampled to study the influence of Apap in a DWTP o

Alkaline chlorination of drinking water: A trade-off between genotoxicity control and trihalomethane formation.

The pH of chlorination is an important factor affecting the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). In this study, we discovered that the genotoxicity induced by chlorination can be effectively reduced under alkaline conditions. As the pH of chlorination increased from 6.5 to 8.5, the genotoxicity of investigated waters reduced by ∼30-90 %. By assessing the genotoxicity of the mixture of measured DBPs, it was found that the contribution of measured DBPs to the overall genotoxicity was lower than 5 %, and the significant reduction of genotoxicity was largely associated with unknown DBPs. NOM fractionation by HPSEC-DAD-OCD for predicting trihalomethane disinfection by-product formation potential in full-scale drinking water treatment plants.

Chlorination is a common method for water disinfection; however, it leads to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), which are undesirable toxic pollutants. To prevent their formation, it is crucial to understand the reactivity of natural organic matter (NOM), which is considered a dominant precursor of DBPs. We propose a novel size exclusion chromatography (SEC) approach to evaluate NOM reactivity and the formation potential of total trihalomethanes-formation potentials (tTHMs-FP) and four regulated species (i.e. CHCl3, CHBrCl2, CHBr2Cl, and CHBr3). This method combines enhanced SEC

Influence of water matrix components on the UV/chlorine process and its reactions mechanism.

The UV/chlorine system has become an attractive alternative Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) for the removal of recalcitrant pollutants in the last decade due to the simultaneous formation of chlorine and hydroxyl radicals. However, there is no consensus regarding the results and trends obtained in previous micropollutant removal studies by AOPs, highlighting the complexity of the UV/chlorine process and the need for further research. This study investigates the degradation of acetaminophen (ACTP) by UV/chlorine and the effects of the water matrix in the reaction kinetics. In particular, the e

Ozonation of lake water and wastewater: Identification of carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl-containing oxidation byproducts by non-target screening.

Ozonation of drinking water and wastewater is accompanied by the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as low molecular weight aldehydes and ketones from the reactions of ozone with dissolved organic matter (DOM). By applying a recently developed non-target workflow, 178 carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl compounds were detected during bench-scale ozonation of two lake waters and three secondary wastewater effluent samples and full-scale ozonation of secondary treated wastewater effluent. An overlapping subset of carbonyl compounds (20%) was detected in all water types. Moreover, wa

Correlation Analysis of the Carboxyl and Carbonyl Groups of Natural Organic Matter and the Formation Potential of Trihalomethanes and Chloral Hydrate.

Natural organic matter (NOM) has always been considered the main precursor of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the chlorine disinfection of drinking water. This research focuses on investigating the correlation between the functional group (carboxyl and carbonyl groups) content of NOM and the formation of trichloromethane (TCM) and chloral hydrate (CH). The quantitative determination of carboxyl groups, carbonyl groups, TCM, and CH were conducted during the drinking water treatment processes with different coagulant dosages and with/without pre-oxidation by KMnO4 or NaClO. Characterization and chlorine reactivity of particulate matter released by bathers in indoor swimming pools.

Disinfecting swimming pool water is essential for preventing waterborne diseases. An unforeseen consequence of treating water with disinfectants is the formation of disinfection by-products (DPBs) that can cause harmful effects to health through the interactions between the added disinfectant and organic matter in the water. The present work focuses on the chlorine reactivity with particles released by bathers. Such particles are collected in the filter backwash water of swimming pools and this study intends to distinguish DPBs generated from dissolved chemicals from those formed by particulat

Formation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) from tetracycline antibiotics during the disinfection of ammonium-containing water: The role of antibiotics dissociation and active chlorine species.

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a nitrosamine, is a typical nitrogenous disinfection byproduct. In this study, NDMA formation potential and mechanism, from tetracycline and oxytetracycline (as model precursors) in an ammonium-contaminating water, were investigated. The results indicated that both monochloramine and dichloramine played a vital role in NDMA formation. Additionally, the determination of NDMA formation potential (NDMA FP) at a wide range of pH showed that the unprotonated tetracycline tended to have a higher NDMA conversion ratio. We also found that the dissociation of hydroxyl on
