Sensory Processing and Performance-Based Executive Functioning in Adolescent Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: An Integrated Assessment.

Prior research in pediatric OCD has addressed sensory processing characteristics and executive functions (EF), typically within separate lines of investigation. This study examined the interrelationships among OCD symptom severity, sensory processing characteristics, and performance-based EF in adolescents with OCD and assessed whether sensory processing and symptom severity are associated with executive outcomes. One hundred adolescents aged 12-18 years meeting DSM-5 criteria exclusively for OCD were assessed. Symptom severity was measured with the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive S

Characterizing Autism Traits in Toddlers with Down Syndrome: Preliminary Associations with Language, Executive Functioning, and Other Developmental Domains.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) show considerable variability in social-communication and cognitive profiles, and a subset meet criteria for co-occurring autism. In the present study, we examined the associations between developmental domains and autistic trait severity in toddlers with DS. Participants included 38 toddlers (M = 4.19 years, SD = 0.99) who completed a home-based assessment, including measures of language, fine motor, and visual reception skills. Caregivers also completed standardized questionnaires on communication and executive functioning. Multiple regression analyses tested

Association of ADHD and the Protogenin gene in the chromosome 15q21.3 reading disabilities linkage region.

Twin studies indicate genetic overlap between symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading disabilities (RD), and linkage studies identify several chromosomal regions possibly containing common susceptibility genes, including the 15q region. Based on a translocation finding and association to two specific alleles, the candidate gene, DYX1C1, has been proposed as the susceptibility gene for RD in 15q. Previously, we tested markers in DYX1C1 for association with ADHD. Although we identified association for haplotypes across the gene, we were unable to replicate the ass

Cardiac implications in myasthenia gravis.

This editorial aimed to consolidate the current evidence in literature on the association between myasthenia gravis (MG) and cardiac involvement, focusing on the impact of thymoma, antistriational antibodies, and late-onset MG. Additionally, the study aimed to explore the influence of genetic differences among populations on the association with cardiac disease. We conducted a review of existing literature in PubMed and Google Scholar to find relevant studies on cardiac involvement in MG. We created search criteria using a combination of free text words, including MG, antistriational antibodie

Exploring the Semantic Structure of WMS-IV Verbal Paired Associates using the Hub-and-Spoke Model.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify a well-fitting and theoretically justified item-level latent factor structure for the Wechsler Memory Scales (WMS)-IV verbal paired associates (VerbalPA) subtest to facilitate the ease and accuracy of score interpretations for patients with lateralized temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: Archival data were used from 250 heterogeneous neurosciences patients who were administered the WMS-IV as part of a standard neuropsychological assessment. Three theoretically motivated models for the latent structure of VerbalPA were tested using confirmatory facto

Glycogenic hepatopathy.

BACKGROUND: Glycogenic hepatopathy (GH) is a disorder associated with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, most commonly type 1, expressed as right upper quadrant abdominal pain, hepatomegaly and increased liver enzymes. The diagnosis may be difficult, because laboratory and imaging tests are not pathognomonic. Although GH may be suggested based on clinical presentation and imaging studies, the gold standard for diagnosis is a liver biopsy, showing a significant accumulation of glycogen within the hepatocytes. GH may be diagnosed also after elevated liver enzymes in routine blood tests. GH usually

Coffee, tobacco and alcohol as risk factors for cancer and adenoma of the large intestine.

Our aim was to estimate the association between smoking history, alcohol and tobacco smoking and tumours of the large intestine. Associations were studied at an early stage of colorectal cancer in order to avoid bias in the information. In order to estimate the link between adenoma and cancer the exposures were analysed separately for cancer and adenoma patients. The study was conducted as a case-control study within a randomized trial for colorectal cancer among males and females aged 45-74 years. Cases initially included all individuals with a positive Haemoccult-II test in three screens and

[Vasomotor activity and coronary insufficiency].

Provocative testing has provided a method of evaluating the important role of vasomotor tone in coronary artery disease. The most sensitive test is the ergonovine (Methergin) test. This is a specific and reliable method of defining the clinical situations in which coronary spasm is common: --focal coronary artery spasm is mainly observed in resting angina alone or in association with effort angina. The prognosis of spasm is excellent with calcium antagonist therapy provided there is no other associated pathology such as left ventricular failure or triple vessel disease; --in the six weeks foll

Decomposing Parietal Memory Reactivation to Predict Consequences of Remembering.

Memory retrieval can strengthen, but also distort memories. Parietal cortex is a candidate region involved in retrieval-induced memory changes as it reflects retrieval success and represents retrieved content. Here, we conducted an fMRI experiment to test whether different forms of parietal reactivation predict distinct consequences of retrieval. Subjects studied associations between words and pictures of faces, scenes, or objects, and then repeatedly retrieved half of the pictures, reporting the vividness of the retrieved pictures ("retrieval practice"). On the following day, subjects complet

Evaluation of the technique used by health-care workers for taking blood pressure.

The precise guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association for blood pressure measurement are commonly overlooked by health-care workers, who generally take blood pressure in an arbitrary way. To validate this observation we designed a descriptive and observational study to be carried out in a major hospital. One hundred and seventy-two health-care workers divided into four groups (63 general practitioners, 25 clinical and 25 surgical specialists, and 59 nurses) were evaluated in a two-part test. In the first part (practical), the examinee had to follow all the steps recommended by t

Is Trichomonas vaginalis a cause of cervical neoplasia? Results from a combined analysis of 24 studies.

BACKGROUND: We conducted this combined analysis of available data from studies with information on this issue to clarify the association between Trichomonas vaginalis infection and cervical neoplasia. METHODS: We performed MEDLINE searches (1966-1993) using the key words and phrases 'trichomonas vaginitis' and 'neoplasms, cervix' for articles published in English, and searched citations of the articles obtained from MEDLINE: A total of 24 articles (two cohort studies and 22 case-control) were included in this data analysis. In the analysis, the studies were evaluated for heterogeneity using B

Resolving the Abstract-Concrete Paradox in the Angular Gyrus: A Multimethod Investigation.

Despite its well-established role in memory-guided cognition, whether and how the angular gyrus (AG) contributes to semantic processing remains unresolved. Connectomic work links the AG to abstract mentation, yet neuroimaging studies paradoxically show greater AG engagement for concrete than abstract semantics. To address this discrepancy, we conducted a multimethod investigation integrating neurostimulation, neuroimaging, and experience sampling across five studies (127 human participants; 53 males; 74 females). Using the contrast between concrete and abstract semantics as a diagnostic test c

tDCS to temporoparietal cortex during familiarisation enhances the subsequent phonological coherence of nonwords in immediate serial recall.

Research has shown that direct current stimulation (tDCS) over left temporoparietal cortex - a region implicated in phonological processing - aids new word learning. The locus of this effect remains unclear since (i) experiments have not empirically separated the acquisition of phonological forms from lexical-semantic links and (ii) outcome measures have focused on learnt associations with a referent rather than phonological stability. We tested the hypothesis that left temporoparietal tDCS would strengthen the acquisition of phonological forms, even in the absence of the opportunity to acquir

A visual paired associate learning (vPAL) paradigm to study memory consolidation during sleep.

Sleep improves the consolidation and long-term stability of newly formed memories and associations. Most research on human declarative memory and its consolidation during sleep uses word-pair associations requiring exhaustive learning. In the present study, we present the visual paired association learning (vPAL) paradigm, in which participants learn new associations between images of celebrities and animals. The vPAL is based on a one-shot exposure that resembles learning in natural conditions. We tested if vPAL can reveal a role for sleep in memory consolidation by assessing the specificity

Breaking it down: Component scores improve the classification accuracy of the Denver Attention Test.

OBJECTIVE: The Denver Attention Test (DAT) is a novel free-standing performance validity test (PVT) with limited research. This study was designed to replicate the initial validation study and explore the utility of alternate metrics. METHOD: The DAT was administered to 71 adults. Classification accuracy was calculated using the Word Memory Test as the criterion PVT. RESULTS: A total accuracy ≤41 had .53 sensitivity at .92 specificity; total completion time ≥157" had .27 sensitivity at .92 specificity. Accuracy cutoffs across individual trials (≤12, ≤13 and ≤14) produced similar classificati

Factors associated with the dual-task cost of walking in people with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Walking skills are negatively affected in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) when performing dual-tasks. However, the factors that contribute to this negative dual-task cost (DTC) remain unclear. PURPOSE: This study was planned to investigate the factors associated with the DTC of walking in PwPD. METHODS: Seventy-seven PwPD were included. Single task walking speed and dual-task walking speed were assessed with the 10-Meter Walking Test (10MWT). The following tests were used in the assessments: the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) for clinical symptoms, the Si

Effect of the Finger-ring Test, compared with the standard test, as a predictor of sarcopenia in older adult patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: The Finger-ring Test is valued for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. This has prompted a systematic literature review to evaluate the effectiveness of the Finger-ring Test in the assessment of sarcopenia. METHODS: Research studies in various online databases were accessed and perused, including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Ovid, Embase, Medline and the Cochrane Database to identify relevant observational studies without any language restriction from database access to July 2024. To avoid missing any relevant matches, searches targeted specific words typically associated with the

ADLM Guidance Document on Laboratory Testing for Drugs of Misuse to Support the Emergency Department.

Toxicology testing for drugs associated with scenarios such as recreational use or substance use disorder can be performed in support of the emergency department (ED) for specific patient populations such as pediatrics and trauma. These compounds were historically referred to as drugs of abuse (DOA); although the word "abuse" is recognized as potentially stigmatizing, no replacement terminology for DOA has emerged in current guidelines. This document refers to these compounds as drugs or substances of misuse, and acknowledges the need for less-stigmatizing language that more fully encompasses
