A correlation was found between the incidence of acute haematogenous osteomyelitis (AHO) and ABO blood groups but not between AHO and the secretory function of the saliva. AHO is more common among children of blood group O and, to a lesser extent, group A. Although it was found to occur more commonly among secretors than non-secretors, the difference from a control group was not statistically significant. At present this possibility can only be taken as a tentative suggestion for further research in this field.

INTRODUCTION: Low titer O whole blood (LTOWB) is the preferred blood product for resuscitation after hemorrhage in civilian and military trauma. The low titer requirement minimizes the risk of hemolytic transfusion reactions caused by donor ABO antibodies. However, up to 25% of otherwise eligible donors are excluded because of high antibody titers. A novel in-line filter has been developed to bind and remove donor antibodies from whole blood during infusion. We evaluated the efficacy of this filter across multiple infusion methods and assessed its effects on whole blood composition and coagula

The relationship between non-O blood groups and thromboembolic events has been suggested by several studies, although the exact underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. However, the correlation between ABO blood groups with the opposite pole of hemostasis, hemorrhage, has been investigated less thoroughly. Non-O blood groups confer an overall increased risk of single, recurrent, and provoked thromboembolic episodes. On the other hand, blood group O has been associated with more severe bleeding events and less favorable manifestations in individuals with hemorrhagic disorders. Therefore,

ABO typing is essential for preventing ABO incompatibility transfusion reactions. Discrepancy exists when reactions in forward grouping do not match with reverse grouping. Any discrepancies reported should be investigated so that correct blood group is reported minimizing the chances of transfusion reaction. The most common causes of ABO discrepancy are cold autoantibodies and missing serum reactivity. We report a rare alloantibody anti-PP1Pk discovered during the resolution of a grouping difficulty with a positive control. Anti-PP1Pk is associated with hemolytic transfusion reactions. In our

OBJECTIVE: Analyze the reasons for the mismatch between forward and reverse typing of ABO blood types and the mismatch between cross matching.
METHODS: When the forward and reverse typing do not match, use physiological saline method, polyamine method, anti human globulin method, and anti screening positive samples are used for antibody identification.
RESULTS: The factors contributing to discrepancies in blood typing between forward and reverse typing include weakened serum typing, condensation, monoclonal immunoglobulin influence, bone marrow transplantation, and blood type subtypes. The c

BACKGROUND: AB plasma is used as the universal donor plasma product in patients requiring massive transfusion. However, currently it is a recommended policy to transfuse plasma derived from male donors only as transfusion of plasma from HLA antibody-positive female donors is associated with an increased risk for transfusion-related acute lung injury. As a result, due to high demands, supplies of blood banks may run out of AB plasma, calling for alternatives. Therefore, the aim of this review was to investigate alternatives for emergency release of AB plasma as the universal donor.

Based on their own practice, the authors give an account of the possibility to use forensic serology when resolving problems of transfusion of incompatible blood in the ABO system. Conventional serological examination of erythrocytes and serum of the recipient--because of haemolysis of the administered blood cells--usually does not provide a picture of the antigenic structure of the donor and thus it does not provide evidence on transfusion of incompatible blood. According to practical experience examination of the blood stain of the recipient by the absorption elution test, incl. assessment o

BACKGROUND: Substituting group A whole blood (GAWB) might relieve some of the burden on the low titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) inventory. This simulation examined the effect of implementing GAWB at a large trauma hospital.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A civilian trauma center with LTOWB and GAWB par levels set to 22 and 10 units, respectively, was modeled as the baseline. The average daily number of WB recipients was 0.5 who received an average of four WB units per patient. LTOWB was issued in packages of five and all had to be consumed before a group A patient could be switched to GAWB. Seve

BACKGROUND: The second blood group determination or group check sample is a process of verifying the ABO group with a second blood sample prior to transfusion. It has been used to detect errors related to wrong blood in tube (WBIT) events and reduce the risk of ABO-incompatible transfusions. To prevent the clinical team from collecting the group check sample at the same time as the first sample, a tan top tube only available from the blood bank was introduced for second blood group determinations if drawn within 24 h of the first group and screen.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a retrospec

Bombay blood group phenotype is often mistyped as O group which can lead to hemolytic transfusion reactions. There are a very few case reports of Bombay blood group phenotype in pediatric age group. Herein, we report an interesting case of Bombay blood group phenotype in a fifteen-month-old pediatric patient who presented with features of raised intracranial pressure and required an emergency surgery. The Bombay blood group was detected on detailed immunohematology work up which was further confirmed by molecular genotyping. The challenges faced in developing countries for transfusion manageme
