Patients with acoustic neuromas have several treatment options that include observation, surgical resection, stereotactic radiosurgery, and fractionated radiotherapy. Resection is indicated for patients with larger tumors that have caused major neurologic deficits from brain compression. Surgeons perform stereotactic radiosurgery as the main alternative to acoustic tumor resection with the goals of preserved neurologic function and prevention of tumor growth. The long-term outcomes of radiosurgery, particularly with gamma knife technique, have proven its role in the primary or adjuvant managem

Eight nerve tumors account for about 8 to 10% of all intracranial tumors, and for about 71 to 75% of all cerebello-pontine angle tumors. They occur particularly in the middle decades of life and are twice as frequent in females as in males. They originate from the distal neurolemmal portion of the nerve, in most instances, from the vestibular division, and represent a neoplasia of the cells of Schwann. Two prominent types of tissue "A" and "B" of Antoni can be distinguished histologically. Regressive changes are frequent and lend them a colorful appearance. Bilateral eighth nerve tumors occur

The National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference on Acoustic Neuroma brought together neurosurgeons, radiosurgeons, otologists, neurologists, audiologists, otolaryngologists, and other health care professionals as well as the public to reach agreement (1) on defining the clinical types of acoustic neuroma, (2) on which procedures are useful for screening and diagnosis, (3) on the options available for managing the disorder as well as the complications of treatment, and (4) on the key clinical and biological areas for future research. Following 2 days of presentations by exper

OBJECTIVE: The evaluation of voice quality is a major component of voice assessment. The aim of the present study was to develop a new multivariate acoustic model for the evaluation of breathiness.
METHOD: Concatenated voice samples of continuous speech and the sustained vowel [a:] from 970 subjects with dysphonia and 88 vocally healthy subjects were perceptually judged for breathiness severity. Acoustic analyses were conducted on the same concatenated voice samples after removal of the non-voiced segments of the continuous speech sample. The development of an acoustic model for breathiness w

This study characterises articulatory-kinematic strategies to differentiate the sibilants /s/ and /ʃ/ in individuals before and after tongue cancer surgery. We further evaluate whether successful differentiation can be predicted by auditory and somatosensory motor learning abilities. Acoustic and electromagnetic articulography data were collected longitudinally (pre-surgery, and 6, 12, and 18 months post-surgery) from Dutch individuals treated for T1-T3 tongue tumours (n = 12). Sex- and age-matched typical speakers (n = 11) were tested once. We analysed the Euclidean distance (ED) between the

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Quantify differences in acoustics and intraglottal flow fields between Thyroplasty Type 1 (TT1) with and without arytenoid adduction (AA) using excised canine larynx model.
STUDY DESIGN: Basic science experiments using excised larynges.
METHODS: Surgical procedures were implemented in eight excised canine larynges. Acoustics and intraglottal flow measurements were taken at low and high subglottal pressures in each experimental setup.
RESULTS: In all larynges, vocal efficiency (VE) and cepstrum peak prominence (CPP) were higher, and the mean phonatory flow rate was low…

PURPOSE: The impact of clear speech, increased vocal intensity, and rate reduction on acoustic characteristics of vowels was compared in speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD), speakers with multiple sclerosis (MS), and healthy controls.
METHOD: Speakers read sentences in habitual, clear, loud, and slow conditions. Variations in clarity, intensity, and rate were stimulated using magnitude production. Formant frequency values for peripheral and nonperipheral vowels were obtained at 20%, 50%, and 80% of vowel duration to derive static and dynamic acoustic measures. Intensity and duration measur

The lack of objective tools in assessing dysphagia has been a challenge among professionals dealing with persons with dysphagia. The lack of training and affordability has made the objective tools access difficult. The acoustics of swallow sound have been explored by many researchers in past decades, and still, there is a considerable research gap in differentiating dysphagic swallow signals from normal. The current study aims to identify the morphological and acoustic features of swallow sound signals to differentiate the typical and dysphagic individuals in a cost-effective way. A vibration …
