Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with thrombotic complications in adults, but the incidence of COVID-19-related thrombosis in children and adolescents is unclear. Most children with acute COVID-19 have mild disease, but coagulopathy has been associated with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a postinfectious complication. We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study to determine the incidence of thrombosis in children hospitalized with COVID-19 or MIS-C and evaluate associated r

In this retrospective study of 319 children with laboratory-confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, we assessed whether age, asthma, obesity, diabetes, and socioeconomic status were associated with hospitalization for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Demographic and clinical characteristics were assessed using univariate statistics, excluding incidental or unrelated positives. There was a bimodal distribution of age among hospitalized children. Obesity (P < .001) and a past medical history of diabetes (P = .001) were significantly more prevalent in

OBJECTIVE: Several risk factors for juvenile justice involvement have been identified in previous research among delinquents and include mental illness, substance use, trauma and abuse, family dysfunction, poor parenting, school problems, and aggressive behavior. However, most of these predictors resulted from studies among adolescents incarcerated in the juvenile justice system. We were interested in finding out the prevalence rates of juvenile justice involvement among psychiatric inpatient adolescents and determining predictors of juvenile justice involvement in this high-risk group.

Characteristics of 100 visits by adolescents (less than 18 years old) to a psychiatric emergency service were examined and compared with those of 100 visits by adults. Adolescents were less likely than adults to receive diagnoses of psychosis and personality disorder but more likely to receive diagnoses of adjustment and conduct disorders, were less likely to have had previous psychiatric treatment but equally likely (40%) to be in current treatment, and required more time to evaluate. Self-destructive ideation or behavior was present in 40% of the adolescents. Nearly all visits were judged to

One hundred eleven cases of poisoning (over a 4 1/2-year period) were retrospectively reviewed at a military medical center. Results of the review included the following: (1) two peak age ranges for poisoning were identified: the 1 1/2- to 4-year-old child who accidently ingests both drugs and non-drugs, and the female adolescent who ingests drugs as a suicide attempt or gesture; (2) hydrocarbons and aspirin were the most common agents ingested; however, if grouped, drugs with anticholinergic effects would replace aspirin as the second most common poison; (3) emergency treatment included emesi
