Dwellings occupied by mobility-limited older people emerge as strong control centers and more age-friendly places.

The future will witness the substantial worldwide growth of older people with functional limitations or disabilities who have difficulties leaving their dwellings and traveling to their neighborhoods or other community destinations to realize their obligatory and discretionary needs and goals. This commentary offers conceptual arguments and literature findings proposing that the dwellings of this vulnerable population deserve new scrutiny because they have become more salient and positively experienced places to live where their occupants can maintain their independence and age in place. Proxy indicators to support independent ageing-in-place in older people with frailty: a Delphi-style expert consultation survey.

INTRODUCTION: Frailty is a clinical syndrome associated with greater risk of functional limitations and dependency. However, older people with or at risk of frailty who live at home can still lead fulfilling lives, engage with their community, and maintain a good quality of life, that is, age in place well. To support this and prevent resource-intensive care use, this expert consultation survey aimed to identify proxy indicators that capture ageing-in-place experiences in community-dwelling older people with frailty. METHODS: Using a modified Delphi approach, two survey rounds were conducted

Comparing methods of determining insertion length for placing gastric tubes in children 1 month to 17 years of age.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to compare three methods of predicting the gastric tube insertion length in children 1 month to 17 years of age: age-related, height-based (ARHB); nose-ear-xiphoid (NEX); and nose-ear-mid-umbilicus (NEMU). DESIGN AND METHODS: The design was a randomized controlled trial. Children were randomly assigned to the ARHB, NEX, or NEMU groups. Tubes placed high were considered to be misplaced. RESULTS: There were significant differences in percentages of correctly placed tubes, with ARHB and NEMU being more accurate than NEX. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: NEX should no longer be u

Aging in Place - A mixed methods study protocol of how care providers in Sweden organise and adapt granted home care services to the preferences and needs of people living with dementia.

The project Aging in Place applies a novel approach to investigate how social care services in Sweden are adapted to preferences and needs of older persons (65 years and older) living at home with dementia, including their partners. The project covers the process that starts when a person is granted to receive services, which are communicated to a care provider - who should organize the services - and finally reach the receiving older person. This approach differs from previous research on elder care, which has focused either on the purchaser or the provider side of Swedish municipal elder car…

Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Education to Support Older Adults with Diabetic Foot Ulcers to Age-in-Place: A Case Series.

The objective of this article is to demonstrate the added value of foot care provided by an RN with foot care training to older adults in their home by focusing on four older adults with diabetic foot ulcers. The RN used a mobile multispectral near-infrared spectroscopy device to enhance the assessment of the diabetic foot ulcers. The Mobile Seniors Wellness Network methodically engaged with English-speaking adults 55 years and older living within a 90-minute radius of the city's community health center. Older adults were referred to the research project through various sources. The participat

Developmental dysplasia of the hip, age, BMI, place of residence and tobacco abuse increase the odds of aseptic loosening in Chinese patients.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this hospital-based case-control study was to evaluate the patient-related risk factors for aseptic loosening after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in Chinese patients. METHODS: From January 2000 to December 2012, 67 patients undergoing THA and TKA who developed aseptic loosening were detected as case subjects and 336 patients without aseptic loosening, matched by the year of index surgery and type of surgery, were selected as controls. Conditional logistic regression was used to compute odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs

Schizophrenic disorder in old age. II. Some differences in demographic, social and clinical characteristics in terms of place of permanent residence.

The author examined 129 cases who were at the time of the investigation 65 years of age and older and who, during their life-time, had been diagnosed as having a schizophrenic disorder. Using a modified P-86 questionnaire and SCAG scale, heteroanamnestic data, and data available from medical histories, the demographic, social, and clinical characteristics of this population were gathered. Differences were defined in terms of the examinees' place of permanent residence (at home, in hospital, in a retirement home). Among other things, the author shows that the type of the permanent residence cor

Should the geriatrician host the party? Person-centred hospital care in ageing societies requires placing geriatrics at the centre of care.

As populations age, multimorbidity and frailty increasingly characterize hospital admissions, exposing the limits of traditional disease-specific and organ-centred models of care. Older adults with complex care needs face higher risks of hospitalization, readmission, functional decline, and fragmented care pathways, while hospitals remain insufficiently aligned with these realities. Despite strong evidence for the clinical and economic benefits of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) and geriatric-led care, geriatrics often remains peripheral to everyday clinical practice and hospital gove

Quality of CAD-CAM inlays placed on aged resin-based composite restorations used as deep margin elevation: a laboratory study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of the age of resin-based composite (RBC) restorations used for deep margin elevation (DME) on the marginal quality and fracture resistance of inlays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Permanent human molars with direct RBC restorations, involving the mesial, occlusal, and distal surface (MOD), were allocated to four groups (each n = 12). Half of the teeth underwent thermomechanical loading including 240,000 occlusal load cycles and 534 thermal cycles (TML, 5 °C/55 °C; 49 N, 1.7 Hz). With RBC left in one proximal box as DME, all teeth received MOD inlays, made from lithi

Using child-friendly movie stimuli to study the development of face, place, and object regions from age 3 to 12 years.

Scanning young children while they watch short, engaging, commercially-produced movies has emerged as a promising approach for increasing data retention and quality. Movie stimuli also evoke a richer variety of cognitive processes than traditional experiments, allowing the study of multiple aspects of brain development simultaneously. However, because these stimuli are uncontrolled, it is unclear how effectively distinct profiles of brain activity can be distinguished from the resulting data. Here we develop an approach for identifying multiple distinct subject-specific Regions of Interest (ss

Frailty as a Superior Predictor of Dysphagia and Surgically Placed Feeding Tube Requirement After Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Relative to Age.

Frailty is a measure of physiological reserve that has been demonstrated to be a discriminative predictor of worse outcomes across multiple surgical subspecialties. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is one of the most common neurosurgical procedures in the United States and has a high incidence of postoperative dysphagia. To determine the association between frailty and dysphagia after ACDF and compare the predictive value of frailty and age. 155,300 patients with cervical stenosis (CS) who received ACDF were selected from the 2016-2019 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) utilizing In

[Marital status and place of living as social determinants of vertebral pain syndrome and disturbance of life quality in women of older age groups.].

In order to study the role of the marital status and place of residence, as the social determinants of the development of vertebral pain syndrome and related disorders of life activity, the results of a survey of 148 postmenopausal women aged 50-69 years were analyzed. Respondents were divided into groups depending on their marital status (living in a family with husbands and other relatives, only with husbands or alone) and places of residence (in rural or urban areas). The results of this study suggest that family status and place of residence in women of older age groups do not directly inf

Health Emergencies, Falls, and Use of Communication Technologies by Older People with Functional and Social Frailty: Ageing in Place in Deprived Areas of Italy.

Frail older people ageing alone in place need help to perform daily living activities, especially when functional limitations are increasing and formal/informal supports are lacking. This context represents a risk of experiencing health emergencies, in particular falls. It is thus important to understand how seniors manage these potential difficulties and who helps them. The present study aimed to explore these dimensions in Italy, where 120 qualitative interviews were carried out in 2019 within the "Inclusive ageing in place" (IN-AGE) research project, involving frail older people living alon

Area-Level Infant Mortality Exposure in Early Life and Alzheimer's Disease Mortality: Examining Variation Based on Age, Sex, and Place of Birth.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that critical periods in early life may contribute to one's risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) in later life. In this paper we explore the role that exposure to infant mortality plays in later life ADRD. OBJECTIVE: To determine if exposure to early life infant mortality is associated with later mortality from ADRD. Also, we explore how these associations differ by sex and age group, along with the role of state of birth and competing risks of death. METHODS: We use a sample of over 400,000 individuals aged 50 and above with the NIH-

Associations between Place of Birth, Type of Attendant, and Small for Gestational Age Births among Pregnant non-Hispanic Black Medicaid Recipients.

INTRODUCTION: Although non-Hispanic Black women have increased risks of adverse birth outcomes compared with non-Hispanic white women in the United States, there is a lack of research specifically focusing on non-Hispanic Black women. Thus, this study's purpose was to evaluate whether place of birth and type of attendant used during labor is associated with having a newborn born small for gestational age (SGA) among non-Hispanic Black Medicaid recipients. METHODS: This study used 2017 Natality data from the National Vital Statistics System for non-Hispanic Black women who used Medicaid as a s

"Place-finding" as the key to reintegration after release from prison in older age: A transdisciplinary, holistic and strengths-based reintegration framework using grounded theory.

Prisons globally face an 'ageing epidemic,' releasing unprecedented numbers of older adults into the community. Research highlights substantial challenges in reintegrating this underserved and marginalised group. Urgent work is needed to understand their needs and develop effective social, criminological, and public health solutions. This study aimed to create a transdisciplinary, strengths-based conceptual framework to understand and begin addressing the reintegration needs of older individuals leaving prison. Applying grounded theory to qualitative data from Australia - including interviews
