Outdoor air pollution and sperm quality.

UNLABELLED: Exposure to air pollution has been clearly associated with a range of adverse health effects, including reproductive toxicity, but its effects on male semen quality are still unclear. We performed a systematic review (up to June 2016) to assess the impact of air pollutants on sperm quality. We included 17 semi-ecological, panel, and cohort studies, assessing outdoor air pollutants, such as PM2.5, PM10, NOx, SO2, and O3, and their effects on DNA fragmentation, sperm count, sperm motility, and sperm morphology. Thirteen studies assessed air pollution exposure measured environmentally…

Air pollution and congenital heart defects.

Environmental factors such as ambient air pollution have been associated with congenital heart defects. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between gestational exposure to air pollution and the risk of congenital heart defects. We conducted a registry-based cohort study with a total of 135,527 live- and still-births in the Tel-Aviv region during 2000-2006. We used a Geographic Information System-based spatiotemporal approach with weekly inverse distance weighting modeling to evaluate associations between gestational exposure to ambient air pollution during weeks 3-8 of pre…

Healthy neighborhoods: walkability and air pollution.

BACKGROUND: The built environment may influence health in part through the promotion of physical activity and exposure to pollution. To date, no studies have explored interactions between neighborhood walkability and air pollution exposure. METHODS: We estimated concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), a marker for direct vehicle emissions), and ozone (O(3)) and a neighborhood walkability score, for 49,702 (89% of total) postal codes in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. NO concentrations were estimated from a land-use regression model, O(3) was estimated from ambient monitoring data; walkabili…

Vulnerability to air pollution health effects.

INTRODUCTION: Ambient air pollution can have adverse effects on the health of exposed populations, but individuals or groups are not equally vulnerable, and pollution reduction benefits are likely to be unevenly distributed within a population. While the use of total-population risks is a valid approach for public health protection, it is increasingly recognized that more attention on vulnerable groups is necessary. This paper describes population vulnerability to the health effects of air pollutants using risk analysis concepts and based on available evidence. METHODS: Publications reporting…

Air pollution, smoking, and plasma homocysteine.

BACKGROUND: Mild hyperhomocysteinemia is independently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Air pollution exposure induces short-term inflammatory changes that may determine hyperhomocysteinemia, particularly in the presence of a preexisting proinflammatory status such as that found in cigarette smokers. OBJECTIVE: We examined the relation of air pollution levels with fasting and postmethionine-load total homocysteine (tHcy) in 1,213 normal subjects from Lombardia, Italy. METHODS: We obtained hourly concentrations of particulate matter < 10 mum in aerodynamic diameter…

Managing respiratory effects of air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution (both indoor and outdoor) has many potential adverse effects on human health. OBJECTIVE: This article looks at the adverse respiratory health effects of air pollution and gives some guidance about management of exposure in susceptible individuals. DISCUSSION: Motor vehicle and industrial emissions are the primary contributors to outdoor air pollution in Australia. High levels of ozone and other pollutants can cause respiratory symptoms in susceptible individuals. Air quality advisory systems exist in most states. Clinicians can incorporate the health eff…

Exercise and outdoor ambient air pollution.

OBJECTIVES: To establish by literature survey: (a) levels at which air pollutants are considered damaging to human health and to exercisers in particular; (b) the current ambient levels experienced in the United Kingdom; (c) whether athletes are especially at risk. METHODS: Six major urban air pollutants were examined: carbon monoxide (CO); nitrogen oxides (NO(X)); ozone (O(3)); particulate matter (PM(10)); sulphur dioxide (SO(2)); volatile organic compounds (VOCs). RESULTS: CO is detrimental to athletic performance. NO(2) is of concern to human health, but outdoor levels are low. O(3) poses

Ambient air pollution exposure and cancer.

Epidemiologic evidence on the relation between ambient air pollution exposure and cancer is reviewed. The well-documented urban/rural difference in lung cancer incidence and the detection of known carcinogens in the atmosphere gave rise to the hypothesis that long-term exposure to air pollution may have an effect on lung cancer risk. However, problems inherent in assessing adequately the exposure of interest led to considerable difficulties in evaluating this effect. Routinely measured air pollutants do not include, as a rule, established carcinogens, and air pollution measurements usually com…

Human exposure to urban air pollution.

This study deals with some methods of making human exposure estimates, aimed at describing the human exposure for selected air pollutants in Sweden that are suspected carcinogens. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) have been chosen as an indicator substance for estimating the concentration of the urban plume. Earlier investigations have shown that the traffic in Swedish cities contributes around 85% to the measured NOx concentrations, and that most of the mutagenicity in urban air originates from traffic. The first section of this paper describes measurements in Stockholm of some unregulated light hydrocar

Human health effects of air pollution.

Over the past three or four decades, there have been important advances in the understanding of the actions, exposure-response characteristics, and mechanisms of action of many common air pollutants. A multidisciplinary approach using epidemiology, animal toxicology, and controlled human exposure studies has contributed to the database. This review will emphasize studies of humans but will also draw on findings from the other disciplines. Air pollutants have been shown to cause responses ranging from reversible changes in respiratory symptoms and lung function, changes in airway reactivity and

Critical issues in air pollution epidemiology.

The epidemiological studies which have had significant impact on the setting of National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQSs) were performed more than twenty years ago. Most of the more recent studies have been seriously flawed in their design and/or execution because they neglected to account for important variables such as: pollutant exposures other than those from ambient air; the influence of personal activity on pollutant uptake; host responsiveness; and the separate contributions of recent transient peak exposures and long-term chronic exposures on the effects endpoints. For particulat

[Effects of air pollution on health].

Air pollution is composed of a particulate phase and a gaseous phase. The particulate phase, consisting of dust and aerosols, is the vehicle of toxic pollutants, transporting them into the respiratory tract. The irritants (sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, aldehydes, and hydrocarbons) are the most important pollutants as regards health; the mucous membranes of the eyes and the respiratory tract are mostly affected. Other substances penetrate into the organism where they can develop actions harmful to various organs (carbon monoxide), generate cancer (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) or attack enzyma…

Lichens as indicators of air pollution.

Field and laboratory studies have demonstrated that lichens are extremely sensitive to sulfur dioxide and that lichens are fairly sensitive to hydrogen fluoride and heavy metals. Further studies are necessary to assess lichens' relative sensitivity to oxidant air pollutants.

Polluted air and fading memory: Effects of air pollution on Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

Air pollution is widely recognized as a major public health concern, and emerging evidence suggests an association with dementia. Establishing a causal relationship, however, is difficult. Economic cycles affect both dementia prevalence and pollution levels: during economic booms, financial resources for treatment rise, but so do air pollution and work-related stress. In South Korea, air quality has generally improved, even as Alzheimer's cases have increased with population aging, indicating a time-series relationship that biases regression results. Air pollution and vascular dementia also te…

Characterizing the relationship between air pollution and childhood cognition in the Children's health and air pollution study.

Air pollution has been linked to impaired cognitive outcomes and lower academic performance in children. The Children's Health and Air Pollution Study (CHAPS) is a longitudinal cohort study following children who live in the Fresno metropolitan area of California, where air pollution is notoriously high. In this study, we investigated the relationship between estimated concentrations of three high-priority air pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, and O3) at the home and school and multiple years of standardized test scores from children in the CHAPS cohort. We analyzed data from 97 children between ages 8 …
