Dual-Modal Illumination System for Defect Detection of Aircraft Glass Canopies.

Defect detection in transparent materials typically relies on specific lighting conditions. However, through our work on defect detection for aircraft glass canopies, we found that using a single lighting condition often led to missed or false detections. This limitation arises from the optical properties of transparent materials, where certain defects only become sufficiently visible under specific lighting angles. To address this issue, we developed a dual-modal illumination system that integrates both forward and backward lighting to capture defect images. Additionally, we introduced the fi

Injuries to Post Mortem Human Surrogates in Oblique Aircraft Seat Environment.

Increased interest in the airline industry to enhance occupant comfort and maximize seating density has prompted the design and installation of obliquely mounted seats in aircraft. The potential for injury and their mechanism in this seating environment is unknown. Epidemiology-based field injury data do not exist for airplane crashes, however, typical impact scenarios have been determined and safety standards addressing fore, aft, and side-facing seats have been levied by the FAA. The impact scenarios defined in these standards can be used to study likely injuries and injury mechanisms using

Measuring cosmic-ray exposure in aircraft using real-time personal dosemeters.

Aircrew exposure to radiation was measured on several long-haul flights using two small commercial electronic personal dosemeters: one was a photon dosemeter, the NRF20; the other was a neutron dosemeter, the NRY21-both manufactured by Fuji Electric Systems Co. Ltd. for radiation protection at nuclear facilities. Non-neutron doses were measured using the photon dosemeter, and neutron doses were measured using the neutron dosemeter. The measured non-neutron doses at commercial aviation altitudes agree with the EPCARD (European Program Package for the Calculation of Aviation Route Doses) dose ca

Male reproductive effects of solvent and fuel exposure during aircraft maintenance.

Few studies have addressed the effects of mixed, low-level exposures to complex mixtures on a man's reproductive potential. In this prospective study, each subject was evaluated before first exposure and at 15 and 30 weeks after exposures had begun. A total of 50 men working on aircraft maintenance at an Air Force installation were included in the study. In addition, eight unexposed men were concurrently sampled. Industrial hygiene (IH) sampling and expired breath samples were collected for jet fuel as measured by total napthas, benzene--a component of jet fuel, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, methyl e

Crashes of commuter aircraft and air taxis. What determines pilot survival?

Pilots have been recognized as an occupational group having very high work-related death rates. Commuter aircraft and air taxis are far more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than are larger airplanes. To examine the factors related to pilot survival in commuter aircraft and air taxi crashes, we analyzed National Transportation Safety Board data for the years 1983 to 1988. Case fatality rates were calculated for the pilots-in-command and odds ratios were estimated from a multivariate logistic regression model for variables related to pilots, aircraft, and circumstances. During the 6-year

Aircraft Wastewater as a Sentinel for Transboundary Antimicrobial Resistance: An Integrated Genomic Approach.

Aircraft wastewater (AWW) provides a composite environmental matrix reflecting passengers from diverse geographic origins and may serve as a surveillance tool for AMR monitoring. To characterize microbial community composition, antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), virulence factor genes (VFGs), and genome-resolved features of AWW. Samples (N = 10) were collected from long-haul flights arriving in the UAE between October 2024 and February 2025. Shotgun metagenomic sequencing and high-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) were performed. Metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) were reconstructed.

Noise characterization of "effective quiet" areas on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier.

The purpose of this investigation was to characterize noise levels in spaces designated as "effective quiet" areas on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. Noise dosimetry samples were collected in 15 designated spaces, representing 15 noise measurements, while at-sea during airwing carrier qualifications. Equivalent sound level (Leq) measurements were collected during flight operations (Leq (flt ops)), non-flight operations (Leq (non-flt ops)), and over 24-hr periods (Leq (24-hr)). These data were compared to the 70 dBA American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) Threshold Limi

Plane palsy: a case of transient facial weakness during an aircraft flight.

Changes in atmospheric pressure have been reported to cause a transient lower motor neuron weakness of the facial nerve. We report the case of a passenger on an international flight who developed a unilateral facial weakness after take-off which resolved within 45 min. The effect is thought to be due to an ischaemic neuropraxia of the facial nerve caused by increased middle ear pressure compressing the facial nerve in an exposed facial canal. The condition has been commonly reported in scuba-divers but less frequently in airline passengers. Treatment is not necessary.

Changes in the mean hearing threshold levels in military aircraft maintenance conscripts.

Aircraft maintenance crews are constantly exposed to severe aircraft noise. The purpose of this study was to verify whether noise from aircraft adversely affects the hearing threshold levels (HTLs) of aircraft maintenance conscripts during their 2 years of mandatory military service. This study included 3,000 male aircraft maintenance conscripts who work in the military runway area. We measured and analyzed HTLs at 2-4 kHz. The duration of exposure to noise increased with an increase in rank; however, HTLs showed a tendency to decrease. We attributed such contradicting results to the learning

Some health effects of aircraft noise with special reference to shift work.

BACKGROUND: Aircraft noise is an environmental stressor. A positive relationship exists between noise and high blood pressure. Shift work is an additional hazardous working condition with negative effect on the behavior attitude of workers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at investigating some health hazards for shift work on workers at Cairo International Airport (CIA), Egypt, as a strategic work place, with more than one stressor. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Assessment of noise effects were carried out in four working sites at the airport besides control sites. The average noise level in the exposur

A strategy for in-flight measurements of physiology of pilots of high-performance fighter aircraft.

Some pilots flying modern high-performance fighter aircraft develop "hypoxia-like" incidents characterized by short periods of confusion and cognitive impairment. The problem is serious and recently led to the grounding of a fleet of aircraft. Extensive discussions of the incidents have taken place but some people believe that there is inadequate data to determine the cause. There is a tremendous disconnect between what is known about the function of the aircraft and the function of the pilot. This paper describes a plan for measuring the inspired and expired Po2 and Pco2 in the pilot's mask,

[Temporal and spatial distribution of ozone concentration by aircraft sounding over Beijing].

Based on the aircraft sounding volume fraction concentration data of ozone (O3), nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2) and other data in Beijing from 2007 to 2010, temporal and spatial evolution of ozone concentration from the ground surface to 3.5 km altitude were studied. Results show that: (1) Vertical profiles of monthly average O3 concentration were in good agreement, with increasing altitude, the concentrations were first increased and then decreased, and then remained almost constant, and there was a clear dividing line at 1.5 km altitude, the vertical gradient of the O3 concentration changed great

Aeromedical evacuation using an aircraft transit isolator of a patient with Lassa fever.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever only present in West Africa. The mortality rate is 1% and may reach 15% among hospitalized patients. Transmission between humans is mostly due to direct contact with infected body fluids. Aeromedical evacuation of patients with viral hemorrhagic fevers (such as Lassa fever) demands strict isolation measures. Only a few cases of such evacuations have been reported in the literature during the last 40 yr. The use of an aircraft transit isolator device could be helpful. CASE REPORT: We report the aeromedical evacuation of a confirmed Lassa fev

Organophosphates in aircraft cabin and cockpit air--method development and measurements of contaminants.

Methods for measurements and the potential for occupational exposure to organophosphates (OPs) originating from turbine and hydraulic oils among flying personnel in the aviation industry are described. Different sampling methods were applied, including active within-day methods for OPs and VOCs, newly developed passive long-term sample methods (deposition of OPs to wipe surface areas and to activated charcoal cloths), and measurements of OPs in high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) recirculation filters (n = 6). In total, 95 and 72 within-day OP and VOC samples, respectively, have been collec

The effect of overwing hatch placement on evacuation from smaller transport aircraft.

Overwing exits are installed on a number of smaller transport aircraft. With a traditional overwing exit, once released, the hatch is not attached to the fuselage and will fall into the cabin. To operate, the hatch has to be brought inwards, manoeuvred and placed in a location where it does not obstruct egress. Accidents and experimental studies have shown that the hatch is not always disposed of into an appropriate location. Evacuation trials from a smaller transport aircraft cabin were conducted. The placement of the exit hatch was manipulated. The results indicated that hatch placement had

Intraocular lens and corneal status following aircraft ejection by a USAF aviator.

Prior to 1967, military aviators who developed visually significant cataracts that affected visual performance were grounded. Those that ultimately required surgical removal were permanently grounded because of significant optical effects post-operatively. With the advent of contact lenses, a limited number of aircrew were returned to the cockpit because of improved optical factors provided by contacts post-cataract surgery. However, development of the intraocular lens (IOL) in the 1970s marked a major technological breakthrough that provided the potential to restore post-cataract surgical vis

Aeromedical evacuation of biological warfare casualties: a treatise on infectious diseases on aircraft.

A basic understanding of the transmission and isolation of infections would be essential to the safe and effective aeromedical evacuation (AE) of biological warfare (BW) casualties. First, the airframe as microbial environment is considered, and relevant preventive and disinfecting measures are discussed. A survey of past infectious disease transmission on civilian aircraft (including tuberculosis, influenza, measles, smallpox, and viral hemorrhagic fevers) is presented, and the communicability and stability of likely BW agents is described. A brief history of U.S. military aeromedical evacuat

Exposure to vibration and self-reported health complaints of riveters in the aircraft industry.

Workers using vibrating tools may experience neurological and vascular symptoms in the fingers and hands. The effect of vibration exposure on bone and joint disorders in the hand, arm and shoulder is less clear. In a cross-sectional study, riveters and controls in an aircraft company were investigated for vibration exposure and health complaints. Vibration measurements showed that frequency-weighted acceleration levels for riveting hammers and bucking bars ranged from 5.5 to 12.3 m s -2. The calculated equivalent frequency-weighted acceleration for a period of 4 h was the questionnaire survey

Ultralight aircraft crashes: their increasing incidence and associated fractures of the thoracolumbar spine.

Ultralight aircraft, which originated in 1975 in the U.S. and have been available in Canada since 1980, have enjoyed a tremendous increase in popularity to the point where it is estimated that there are close to 20,000 ultralights in North America today. Two reasons account for their growing popularity: relatively low cost and simplicity, allowing almost any person to enjoy the sport of flying, which was unattainable for most just a few years ago. Unfortunately, inexperienced pilots and relatively new and unproven aircraft have been brought together to create a potentially lethal combination.
