Temporal analysis of feeding patterns of Culex erraticus in central Alabama.

Host blood meals in seven mosquito species previously shown to be infected with eastern equine encephalitis virus at a site in the Tuskegee National Forest in southcentral Alabama were investigated. Of 1374 blood meals derived from 88 different host species collected over 6 years from these seven mosquito species, 1099 were derived from Culex erraticus. Analysis of the temporal pattern of Cx. erraticus meals using a Runs test revealed that the patterns of feeding upon avian and mammalian hosts from March to September of each year were not randomly distributed over time. Similarly, meals taken …

Pediatric renal transplantation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, 1968 to 1993.

From May 5, 1968 through January 31, 1993, 272 renal allografts were performed in 233 children at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Graft survival has improved since 1983 with the addition of cyclosporine. Acute and chronic rejections continue to be the major causes of graft failure. The use of living-related donor renal allografts optimizes long-term graft function, allows early transplantation, and minimizes potential long-term dialysis complications in children.

High rate of varicella complications among Mexican-born adults in Alabama.

OBJECTIVE: Our study examines risk factors for severe varicella in an outbreak among Mexican-born adults, and it compares susceptibility to infection and reliability of self-reported varicella history for these individuals with that for adults born in the United States in the outbreak locale, which may guide vaccination strategies. METHODS: We interviewed case patients and non-case persons in the affected apartment complex and workplace, assessed disease history and susceptibility by testing for varicella-zoster virus immunoglobulin G antibodies, and reviewed the clinical data of case patient

HIV risk and healthcare attitudes among detained adolescents in rural Alabama.

This qualitative study explored the dynamics of adolescent HIV risk through focus group interviews of male and female adolescents at an Alabama juvenile detention facility, key informant interviews, and through interviews of HIV-positive and -negative adults in institutional settings and public health clinics in Alabama. The interviews revealed that commodified or unprotected sex with multiple partners was a common risk activity for male and female adolescents, with a related high risk of sexually transmitted disease. The adolescents were aversive to condom use and lacked knowledge of the dyna…

Contextual Factors Influencing Screening for Diabetic Eye Disease in Alabama: Provider Perspectives.

Introduction/Objectives: Comprehensive eye exams are recommended at least every 2 years for people with diabetes for early identification and treatment of diabetic eye disease, but screening rates remain suboptimal. Our objective was to qualitatively assess barriers and facilitators to completing recommended eye exam screening for patients with diabetes among providers and practice staff. Methods: As part of a larger initiative, we conducted discussion groups with healthcare providers and practice staff to evaluate factors related to referral and screening for diabetic eye disease at 2 sites,

Relapsing Fever Caused by Borrelia lonestari after Tick Bite in Alabama, USA.

We report an immunocompromised patient in Alabama, USA, 75 years of age, with relapsing fevers and pancytopenia who had spirochetemia after a tick bite. We identified Borrelia lonestari by using PCR, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. Increasing clinical availability of molecular diagnostics might identify B. lonestari as an emerging tickborne pathogen.

Acute Hepatitis and Adenovirus Infection Among Children - Alabama, October 2021-February 2022.

During October-November 2021, clinicians at a children's hospital in Alabama identified five pediatric patients with severe hepatitis and adenovirus viremia upon admission. In November 2021, hospital clinicians, the Alabama Department of Public Health, the Jefferson County Department of Health, and CDC began an investigation. This activity was reviewed by CDC and conducted consistent with applicable federal law and CDC policy.

Developing GIS-based eastern equine encephalitis vector-host models in Tuskegee, Alabama.

BACKGROUND: A site near Tuskegee, Alabama was examined for vector-host activities of eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV). Land cover maps of the study site were created in ArcInfo 9.2 from QuickBird data encompassing visible and near-infrared (NIR) band information (0.45 to 0.72 microm) acquired July 15, 2008. Georeferenced mosquito and bird sampling sites, and their associated land cover attributes from the study site, were overlaid onto the satellite data. SAS 9.1.4 was used to explore univariate statistics and to generate regression models using the field and remote-sampled mosqui…

Syphilis outbreak among Hispanic immigrants in Decatur, Alabama: association with commercial sex.

BACKGROUND: Despite national progress in syphilis control, increases in rates have recently occurred, and syphilis is still an endemic problem in the southern United States. An outbreak of infectious syphilis among Hispanics was identified in Decatur, Alabama. GOAL: An investigation was initiated to describe the outbreak and to assist with prevention activities. STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed case interview records and syphilis surveillance data. The Morgan County Health Department (MCHD) performed voluntary door-to-door syphilis screening in neighborhoods where a large number of cases had been i…

Genetic characterization of chicken anemia virus from commercial broiler chickens in Alabama.

Chicken anemia virus (CAV) isolates show extremely limited genetic variability worldwide. We determined the nucleotide sequence of an 823-nucleotide portion of the 2.3-kb CAV genome found in 10 liver and/or spleen specimens of Alabama 29-to-49-day-old commercial broiler chickens exhibiting lymphocyte depletion of the thymus submitted to the state diagnostic laboratory because of problems unrelated to anemia. We determined the nucleotide sequence directly from DNA isolated from tissues, without isolation of virus in culture. This procedure enabled us to characterize CAV that might not have repl…

A 15-year review of railway-related deaths in Jefferson County, Alabama.

A retrospective computer search of the records of the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner Office covering the 15-year period from 1981 to 1995 revealed 86 cases in which either a train caused death or in which a body was found dead by the tracks. The average age of the decedents was 39 years (range, 3 weeks-87 years). Men accounted for 88% of the deaths. The manners of death were as follows: three natural, 64 accident, seven suicide, six homicide, and six undetermined. Six decedents were found dead by the tracks, but death was not caused by a train. Six decedents were railroad employees

Intersectionality of Race, Rurality on Persistent Poverty Disparities in Cancer Mortality in Alabama.

INTRODUCTION: Counties in persistent poverty (PP) have higher cancer-related mortality rates. Intersectionality with race and rurality is present; individuals identifying as Black residing in rural PP counties have the highest cancer-related mortality rates. However, heterogeneity exists throughout counties (e.g., demographics). To date, few studies evaluated the effect of small-area PP residence on individual-level survival and intersectionality with race and rurality. METHODS: This retrospective cohort utilized Alabama Statewide Cancer Registry data of adults with breast, prostate, colorect…

Firearm injury in Alabama's pediatric patients: An assessment of neighborhood vulnerability and opportunity.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of pediatric firearm injuries is increasing. While developed independently, Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) and Child Opportunity Index (COI) quantify socioeconomic disparities in pediatric populations although using different variables. There is scant research applying these indices to the incidence of pediatric firearm injuries. We aimed to investigate the association between SVI, COI, and pediatric firearm injuries seen at a state verified pediatric level one trauma center. METHODS: We included children evaluated for firearm injury from 2016 to 2023 in a retros
