BACKGROUND: Postural control is a complex skill based on the collaboration of dynamic sensory mechanisms, namely the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems.
METHODS: A literature survey regarding postural stability in strabismus and amblyopia was conducted using databases in order to collect data for a narrative review of published reports and available literature.
RESULTS: The results of the literature survey were analyzed to provide an overview of the current knowledge of postural stability in strabismus and amblyopia. The results revealed that although postural control depends on t…

Amblyopia is an ophthalmological developmental disorder that occurs during early childhood due to disrupted binocular vision. It leads to reduced best-corrected visual acuity in one eye (seldom in both eyes) in which the visual acuity of one eye is 2 rows weaker than the other eye on a Snellen vision testing chart. Many studies have reported the outcomes of acupuncture in the treatment of amblyopia. Evidence suggests that acupuncture improves outcomes in children with amblyopia, but these studies are associated with several limitations which may affect the evaluation of the efficacy and reprod…

Throughout the history of pediatric ophthalmology, pathophysiological state has always played an important role. It's characterized by reduced central vision, often paired with disruption of binocular vision, which is interpreted as amblyopia. Central vision is necessary for social integration, so its disorders cause great quality of life changes in patients limiting their professional activities and complicating everyday life. Despite large number of proposed methods of treatment, amblyopia still remains a pressing problem and its prevalence has not changed significantly over the years.

Amblyopia is a neuro-developmental disorder of the visual cortex that arises from abnormal visual experience early in life. Amblyopia is clinically important because it is a major cause of vision loss in infants and young children. Amblyopia is also of basic interest because it reflects the neural impairment that occurs when normal visual development is disrupted. Amblyopia provides an ideal model for understanding when and how brain plasticity may be harnessed for recovery of function. Over the past two decades there has been a rekindling of interest in developing more effective methods for t…

PURPOSE: To determine factors associated with pretreatment and posttreatment stereoacuity in subjects with moderate anisometropic amblyopia.
METHODS: Data for subjects enrolled in seven studies conducted by the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group were pooled. The sample included 633 subjects aged 3 to <18 years with anisometropic amblyopia, no heterotropia observed by cover test, and baseline amblyopic eye acuity of 20/100 or better. A subset included 248 subjects who were treated with patching or Bangerter filters and had stereoacuity testing at both the baseline and outcome examination…

Most of the evidence of formation of amblyopia is derived traditionally from electrophysiological studies. Recently, there have been many discoveries from genetics, histopathology, biochemistry, immunology and interventional studies. On the basis of evidence gathered in the last five years, the various types of amblyopia (strabismic and non-strabismic amblyopia) can be seen not only as disturbance of the development of the visual system at different points but as basically different pathologic processes. It is postulated here that strabismic amblyopia is initiated as a maladaptive differentiat…

We designed a diagnostic slide ruler for easier detection of strabismus and amblyopia, both of which begin in childhood. This new instrument makes the Parks three-step test easier to use and faster than other methods in diagnosing isolated cyclovertical muscle paralysis. Furthermore, the slide ruler tests visual acuity with both series letters and single letters. Incorporated into the instrument are Laurence's strabismometer, Haab's pupillometer, occluder, pinhole, and millimeter ruler. A laboratory model is now available, and this slide ruler can assist the ophthalmological practitioner in an…

Adie's syndrome comprises a tonic pupil, which may be associated with impairment of accommodation, in the presence of diminished or absent deep tendon reflexes. We report a case of a 4-year-old boy with Adie's syndrome in which latent hypermetropia was made manifest by accommodative paresis and resulted in reversible amblyopia.

Strabismus and amblyopia are among the most common eye problems encountered in children. Proper assessment and management require a knowledge of the various types, methods of detection, and principles of treatment. The role of the pediatrician is emphasized because of the importance of early detection.

PURPOSE: To review the published literature on the diagnostic accuracy of instrument-based screening devices used to detect amblyopia and amblyopia risk factors (ARFs).
METHODS: A literature search of the PubMed database with no date restrictions and limited to articles published in English was last conducted in January 2025. The search yielded 291 articles; 41 were reviewed in full text, and 33 met the criteria for inclusion in this assessment. The panel methodologist assigned a level of evidence rating to each of the included studies.
RESULTS: All 33 articles (which reported results from 2…

Abnormalities in visual processing caused by visual deprivation or abnormal binocular interaction may induce amblyopia, which is characterized by reduced visual acuity. Occlusion therapy, the conventional treatment, requires special attention as occlusion of the fellow normal eye may reduce its visual acuity and impair binocular vision. Besides recovering visual acuity, some researchers have recommended restoration of stereoacuity and motor fusion and reverse suppression in order to prevent diplopia. Recent studies have documented that the amblyopic visual cortex has a normal complement of cel…

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is the main cause for mostly monocular, impaired vision in childhood. Treatment and prevention of amblyopia is only effective during childhood. Ophthalmological screening of children does not yet exist in Germany.
EPIDEMIOLOGY: The prevalence of amblyopia in Germany is 5.6%, which is higher than in reports from studies in Australia; however, the prevalence of amblyopia is not comparable in these studies due to different definitions of amblyopia and the inclusion/exclusion criteria of the study cohorts. At present it is unknown at what age ophthalmological screening shoul…

BACKGROUND: Contrast-balanced dichoptic experience with perceptual-learning tasks or simple games has been shown to improve visual acuity significantly in amblyopia. However, these tasks are intensive and repetitive, and up to 40% of unsupervised patients are noncompliant. We investigated the efficacy of a potentially more engaging movie method to provide contrast-balanced binocular experience via complementary dichoptic stimulation.
METHODS: Eight amblyopic children 4-10 years of age were enrolled in a prospective cohort study to watch 3 dichoptic movies per week for 2 weeks on a passive 3D …

We report the case of an 18-year-old male who developed both nutritional amblyopia and night blindness. After nearly a lifetime of consuming a bizarre diet limited to French fries, pretzels, crackers, and carbonated sodas, he had a relatively sudden onset of night blindness and bilateral visual loss. The night blindness resolved after taking daily oral vitamin A supplements. Visual acuity gradually improved from light perception, both eyes, to 20/20 right eye and 20/25 left eye after multivitamin supplementation and vitamin B(12) injections. The patient had bilateral optic atrophy and bilatera…

The authors describe five children with nasolacrimal duct obstruction who developed anisometropic amblyopia in the same eye. Because three children had no indication of vision loss at their initial presentation, cycloplegic refraction and periodic visual acuity screenings for such patients is recommended.
