OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients with anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (anti-ARS) autoantibodies. Patients and Methods We examined 14 ILD patients with anti-ARS autoantibodies between 2004 and 2007 and retrospectively investigated their clinical, radiographic, and pathological findings.

The screening of new antibiotics against several bacterial strains often reveals unexpected occurrences of natural drug resistance. Two examples of this involve specific inhibitors of Staphylococcus aureus isoleucyl-transfer-RNA synthetase 1 (IleRS1) and, more recently, Streptococcus pneumoniae methionyl-tRNA synthetase 1 (MetRS1). The specific activities of 17 aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases in liver, lung, heart, spleen, kidney and small intestine of old female normal and leukemic (reticulum-cell sarcoma, type A) mice have been monitored. No difference appears for lung, heart and kidney; small increases with varying particular changes for liver and marked increases in spleen and small intestine of the tumor bearing mice have been found, following a similar pattern. This finding suggests a coordinated adaptation to modulation of the requirements of protein synthesis imposed by histiocytic sarcoma.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and clinical significance of coexistence of anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (anti-ARS) antibody in patients with anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5-positive dermatomyositis (anti-MDA5 + DM).

CASE: An adult woman with anti-aminoacyl-t RNA synthetase syndrome developed pain and swelling of both hands and her left forearm, initially diagnosed as seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. Surgical exploration revealed multiple "rice bodies," and the specimen grew Mycobacterium intracellurale. She subsequently received antibiotic therapy.
CONCLUSION: In the diagnosis of rice body formation in musculoskeletal tissues, it is necessary to consider not only rheumatic diseases but also mycobacterial infection.
