BACKGROUND: Tick-borne illness are becoming increasingly common, in a spreading geographic area. Lyme disease is a well-known cause of cardiovascular disease, but anaplasmosis has previously had relatively little reported association with conduction and myocardial disease.
CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old man with fever and malaise was admitted to the intensive care unit in shock. Electrocardiogram showed new atrial fibrillation and conduction abnormalities. Transthoracic echocardiogram demonstrated normal left ventricular ejection fraction but significant right ventricle dysfunction. Cardiac magn…

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma are obligate intracellular bacteria and aetiological agents of tick-borne diseases of both veterinary and medical interest. The genus Anaplasma comprises six species: Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma centrale, Anaplasma ovis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Anaplasma bovis and Anaplasma platys. They can infect humans, carnivores, ruminants, rodents, insectivores, birds and reptiles. The aim of this study was to present the first clinical case of granulocytic anaplasmosis in a captive ring-tailed lemur in Poland.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old female lemur presented anorexia, e…

BACKGROUND: The diverse tickborne infections of the northeastern United States can present as undifferentiated flu-like illnesses. In areas endemic for Lyme and other tickborne diseases, patients presenting with acute febrile illness with myalgia, headache, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and elevated hepatic aminotransferase levels are presumptively diagnosed as having human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA).
OBJECTIVE: To assign a cause for illness experienced by 2 case patients who were initially diagnosed with HGA but did not rapidly defervesce with doxycycline treatment and had no laborator…

OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the performance of 3 laboratory tests on blood specimens for direct detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, the cause of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), in patients tested at a single medical institution in New York State.
METHODS: Direct tests included microscopic blood smear examination for intragranulocytic inclusions, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and culture using the HL-60 cell line. The HGA cases testing positive by only 1 direct test were not included, unless HGA was confirmed by acute or convalescent serology using an indirect immunofluoresce…

Tick-borne illnesses are a growing problem in the United States. Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), carried by the Ixodes scapularis tick, is caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. While the clinical manifestations of HGA may be protean, ranging from asymptomatic infection to life-threatening multiorgan failure, renal involvement is uncommon. We report a case of a 64-year-old man presenting with a febrile illness and acute nephritis in the setting of HGA infection. The patient's kidney biopsy was characterized by a membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis pattern and acute interstitial infla…

The clinical chemical changes induced by Anaplasma marginale infection were determined in 16 adult, intact cows infected with either of 2 virulent isolates and in 8 others treated with a live sheep-attenuated A marginale vaccine and were compared with the clinical chemical analyses in 7 noninfected controls. Blood samples from the cows were analyzed for various serum components and during clinical disease. Cows infected with the 2 virulent isolates had maximum erythrocyte parasitemias (0.5% to 66%) between 1 and 11 days of patency (DP); 7 of the 16 infected animals died within 5 to 12 DP. Cows

Bovine anaplasmosis, caused by the rickettsia Anaplasma marginale, is an economically important tick-borne disease of cattle that is found worldwide. Its clinical effects of severe anemia, decreased growth, weight loss, and death negatively impact cattle welfare and create a significant economic burden for cattle producers. Despite availability of highly sensitive and specific assays for anti-A. marginale antibodies (competitive ELISA) and A. marginale genetic material (real-time PCR), the interpretation of test results for the diagnosis of clinical anaplasmosis in cattle remains challenging. …

BACKGROUND: Natural service breeding is common in U.S. cow-calf operations. Diseases impacting bull reproductive performance have significant economic consequences for producers. Anaplasmosis may be an underappreciated cause of poor reproductive performance in bulls. The primary systemic effects of bovine anaplasmosis including anemia, fever, and weight loss, can all result in unsatisfactory reproductive performance. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate breeding soundness examination (BSE) outcomes and clinical changes in bulls during and upon resolution of clinical anaplasmosis. …

This brief review focuses first on several epidemiologically relevant aspects of anaplasmosis, including: (1) the role of male ticks as intrastadial, biological vectors of Anaplasma through interhost transfer; (2) the application of molecular diagnostic assays in assessing tick vector competence and evaluating the role of chronically infected carrier cattle as sources of Anaplasma marginale infection in vector ticks; (3) opportunities provided by a recently developed in vitro tick feeding system in quantitating studies of tick-hemoparasite-host interactions. Lastly, current knowledge of the st…

Live frozen vaccines containing Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina or Anaplasma centrale were prepared using glycerol as cryoprotectant and stored in liquid nitrogen. The viability of the vaccines was tested inoculating calves 1 h (n = 12), 2 h (n = 12), 12 h (n = 6) and 24 h (n = 6) after thawing. Babesia bovis and A. centrale were detected in thin and/or thick blood smears in all vaccinated calves; however, 1 of 12 calves inoculated 1 h after thawing and 3 of 6 calves inoculated 24 h after thawing did not develop a B. bigemina parasitaemia. The longer post-thawing durability of frozen vaccines

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified routine laboratory abnormalities associated with human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). To aid clinicians in evaluating patients with suspected disease while waiting for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results, we describe the diagnostic testing characteristics of routine laboratory tests compared with a gold standard PCR.
DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective chart review of emergency department patients in a highly endemic region who had an HGA PCR sent as part of their clinical care. We reviewed 223 eligible PCR-positive cases and a randomly samp…

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis is an obligate intra-granulocytic parasite that is transmitted by Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus in North America. We report on the second laboratory-confirmed case of Anaplasma phagocytophilum acquired within the province of Alberta, Canada. A 67-year-old woman from the Edmonton health zone developed nonspecific systemic symptoms including fatigue, night sweats, myalgia, headaches, and fever 6 days after noticing a tick on her left upper arm in May of 2017 (day 0). On day 13, she was found to have thrombocytopenia. Her symptoms progressed until day 16 w…

Background: Anaplasmosis is an emerging tick-borne infection that typically presents as a non-specific febrile illness, with variable degrees of cytopenias and liver tests abnormalities. Severe complications remain atypical and uncommon. Case Report: We report a case of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) occurring during confirmed anaplasmosis in a 73-year-old male with no traditional thromboembolic risk factors. The patient presented with fever, constitutional symptoms, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and abnormal liver tests, raising suspicion for a tick-borne illness. Despite early clinical improv…

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), or anaplasmosis, is a tick-borne illness caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, a gram-negative intracellular bacterium. A. phagocytophilum is primarily transmitted by Ixodes scapularis in the northeast United States and by Ixodes pacificus in California. Presenting symptoms typically include fever, chills, malaise, headache, myalgia, and rarely a rash. This case describes a 61-year-old Black male with a complex medical history, including prior tick-borne and arboviral infections (Lyme disease, dengue fever, and chikungunya), hypertension, mixed hyperlipide…

Point-of-care (POC) ELISA tests are routinely used in US veterinary practices to screen canine patients for antibodies to tick-transmitted pathogens. Results are also used to monitor spatial and temporal trends in canine seroprevalence, and these data can build awareness of the risk to humans of tick-transmitted diseases such as Lyme disease and anaplasmosis. This study utilized a second-generation test that has incorporated additional Anaplasma-specific peptides into a commercial POC ELISA test to allow detection of Anaplasma spp. antibodies earlier post-infection. A convenience population co…

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) and human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) are important arthropod-borne infectious diseases in Korea and share a common point that they are transmitted by arthropod bites mostly during outdoor activities and there are considerable overlaps of epidemiologic and clinical features at presentation. We investigated the co-infection of these infections.
METHODS: The study subjects were patients with laboratory-confirmed scrub typhus who were enrolled retrospectively in 2006. SFTS virus (SFTSV) infection was confirmed by a …

Camel Anaplasmosis is caused by members of family Anaplasmatacae, a tick transmitted, obligate intracellular bacteria. The etiological bacteria are transmitted by ixodid tick species. The species have multi host range distribution that is why it is crucial to diagnose it timely. The aim of present study was to investigate the molecular epidemiology i.e. prevalence and risk factors analysis of camel anaplasmosis. Furthermore, variations in hematological standards were also evaluated. The study found an overall 13.33% prevalence in camels. The confirmation of PCR positive samples for Anaplasma s…
