The human communicating nerve. An extension of the external superior laryngeal nerve that innervates the vocal cord.

OBJECTIVE: A second source of motor innervation for the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle, other than the recurrent laryngeal nerve, has been suggested by clinical and experimental observations. Early anatomists noted what appeared to be small nerves connecting the cricothyroid and TA muscles; however, these observations were disputed by later anatomists and subsequently forgotten. METHOD: In this study, we processed 27 human hemilarynges with Sihler's stain, a technique that clears soft tissue and counterstains nerve. In addition, four communicating nerves (CNs) were frozen sectioned and stained fo…

Perispinal Delivery of CNS Drugs.

Perispinal injection is a novel emerging method of drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS). Physiological barriers prevent macromolecules from efficiently penetrating into the CNS after systemic administration. Perispinal injection is designed to use the cerebrospinal venous system (CSVS) to enhance delivery of drugs to the CNS. It delivers a substance into the anatomic area posterior to the ligamentum flavum, an anatomic region drained by the external vertebral venous plexus (EVVP), a division of the CSVS. Blood within the EVVP communicates with the deeper venous plexuses of the CSV

Anatomy of the Orbit.

Each orbit is a complex structure housing the globe, multiple cranial nerves, muscles, vascular structures, which support the visual sense. Many of these structures have been delineated in careful detail by anatomists but remain beyond the resolution of conventional imaging techniques. With the advances of higher resolution MR, surface coil usage, and thinner section computed tomographic images, the ability to resolve these small structures continues to improve, allowing radiologists to provide more detailed anatomic descriptions for preoperative and pretreatment planning.

Retinal Input to the Primate Lateral Geniculate Nucleus Revealed by Injection of a Different Label Into Each Eye.

The primate lateral geniculate nucleus has long been a favorite structure among anatomists because of its striking lamination. It has been shown that each lamina receives input from a different eye using various single label techniques but never by double labeling. Here, we illustrate the organization of retinal inputs to the lateral geniculate nucleus by injection of cholera toxin-B conjugated to Alexa Fluor-488 into the right eye and cholera toxin-B conjugated to Alexa Fluor-594 into the left eye.

The common bile duct: size, course, relations.

The common bile duct may present a number of anatomical peculiarities regarding its size, course and relations, which should be taken into consideration by the anatomists and by the surgeons as well, during the surgery of the gallbladder, pancreas and duodenum. In the present study, we have analyzed the anatomical peculiarities of the common bile duct in 150 adult corpses of both sexes from the Anatomy Department and 22 human fetuses from the Pathology Department, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca.

Cysto-duodeno-colic ligament and its clinical relevance.

During a routine dissection class for the undergraduate students at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, a rare uncommon variation of the peritoneal ligament was found. Information regarding variation in such type of accessory peritoneal reflections is necessary for anatomists, surgeons, and radiologists. Normally there was no peritoneal reflection between gallbladder, duodenum and transverse colon, but in the present case report, it was present and termed as cysto-duodeno-colic ligament. Knowledge of such variation is necessary during gallbladder surgeries and liver transplanta…

A Previously Unreported Variant of a Thoracic Vertebra.

Pathology associated with anomalous transverse processes is uncommon and usually involves elongated C7 transverse processes in the so-called cervical rib syndrome. We report a single adult thoracic vertebra found to have duplicated transverse processes on the left side. We believe this to be the first report of a duplicated transverse process in man. The clinician and anatomist who view osteological material or imaging should consider this an extremely rare anatomical variation of the thoracic spine.

Cadaveric findings of persistent fetal trigeminal arteries.

Persistence of fetal intracranial arteries is rare. We review this anatomical literature regarding the persistence of the trigeminal artery and discuss the findings in two cadaveric cases both found to harbor this vessel. This anomaly should be considered by the clinician and anatomist who view imaging of the skull base. Additionally, the relationships between such an artery and other structures within the cavernous sinus should be understood by the neurosurgeon who operates in this region, e.g., transsphenoidal approaches to the skull base.

Endovaginal sonographic diagnosis of craniorachischisis at 13 weeks of gestation.

A rare case of craniorachischisis associated with trisomy 18 is described. The diagnosis was made by endovaginal sonography during the first trimester of pregnancy. The case is interesting for two reasons. First, it confirms the importance of carrying out an accurate sonographic examination during the first trimester. Second, it shows us that the postmortem examination should be performed by an experienced anatomist: embryos need to be embedded in paraffin wax for microscopic observation and, at present, little is known about the abnormalities of embryo anatomy.

Abdominal hernias: imaging review and historical perspectives.

Many eminent anatomists originally described abdominal hernias, some of which are still named after the original authors. In this article, the radiologic features of abdominal hernias are reviewed as imaged on x-ray, ultrasound, multidetector computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Recognition of the typical appearance of various types of abdominal hernias and associated adverse features such as bowel obstruction, perforation, strangulation, or volvulus formation can help in formulating an accurate diagnosis. A short biography of the scientists associated with eponymous hernias an…

Evaluating the clinical decision-making performance of large language models in clinically oriented thoracic anatomy scenarios: a comparative evaluation study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models are increasingly used as supportive tools in medical education; however, their reliability in anatomically based clinical reasoning remains insufficiently defined. This study aimed to compare the accuracy, depth, and clinical applicability of model-generated responses to thoracic anatomy–based clinical scenarios and to assess inter-rater reliability among expert anatomists. METHODS: This exploratory comparative study evaluated four widely used models—ChatGPT-4o, DeepSeek-V2, Gemini, and Grok—using 20 open-ended thoracic anatomy questions derived from seven cli…

The development of a core syllabus for teaching musculoskeletal anatomy of the vertebral column and limbs to medical students.

The study of human anatomy is fundamental to medical education globally. Knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy is essential for safe and effective clinical practice, yet this topic often receives insufficient medical program time and perceptions differ regarding which knowledge is core. Given the lack of syllabuses specific to musculoskeletal anatomy, this article aims to provide a detailed syllabus for the vertebral column and limbs relevant to medical students. A Delphi panel comprising anatomists and clinicians rated 2,260 anatomical structures and concepts as "essential," "important," "acce…

Lumbosacral plexus root thickening: Establishing normal root dimensions using magnetic resonance neurography.

Disorders affecting the lumbosacral plexus (LSP) can alter root diameter. Our aim was to determine normal LSP nerve root dimensions using ma … g the same scanner and parameters identical to those described above. Subsequently, two experienced anatomists dissected and measured the LSP roots at exactly the same distance from the DRG, using an electronic caliper. Mean root size values recorded (± standard deviation) in the asymptomatic patients were as follows: L2: 3.12 mm (±0.92), L3: 4.29 mm (±0.95) …

Jean-Nicolas Marjolin (1780-1850): An ulcer, an anthrax, and a rose.

Jean-Nicolas Marjolin was a 19th century French anatomist and surgeon. Although not strictly speaking a pivotal figure in history of medicine, he deserves to be known for at least three reasons. He (more or less accurately) described a type of ulcer which is nowadays referred to as Marjolin's ulcer (1828); he had the privilege of operating on the world-famous Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord for an anthrax (1838); and a rose has been named after him since 1860.

A supraclavicular cephalic vein drained into the subclavian vein.

Although the cephalic vein follows a fairly consistent course, numerous variants have been reported. We found a rare anatomical presentation of the cephalic vein in a 75-year-old Korean male cadaver. The left cephalic vein was identified in the deltopectoral groove, ascended over the clavicle, and terminated into the left subclavian vein just before its union with the left internal jugular vein. The detailed knowledge on the variations of the cephalic vein is important for clinicians as well as anatomists since the approach through the axillary base is favored in many invasive clinical procedu…

A retroesophageal right subclavian artery originating from the left aortic arch -- a case report and review of the literature.

The retroesophageal right subclavian artery is an anatomical abnormality encountered by anatomists and pathologists and recently interventional cardiologists and thoracic surgeons have also come across this phenomenon. We report a case of a retroesophageal right subclavian artery arising from a normally located left aortic arch in a young male autopsied in the Department of Forensic Service of Warsaw Medical University. In addition to the aforementioned anomaly, the presence of a right non-recurrent inferior laryngeal nerve was noticed. The possible embryonic development of these branching pat…

Bile leak from the liver bed following laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Intraperitoneal accumulation of bile from accessory bile ducts following cholecystectomy is an uncommon, but well-described, occurrence. It is not unique to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The presence of accessory channels between the liver and gallbladder has long been recognized by anatomists and surgeons. They are commonly known as the "ducts of Luschka". Recognition and treatment of liver bed bile leaks vary. Usually the surgeon can treat this problem without an exploratory celiotomy depending on availability of ERCP or interventional radiology. This article will review clinical diagnosis, …

Meckel's diverticulum and the eponymous legend.

Johann Friedrich Meckel (1781-1833) was a 19th century anatomist born into an eminent dynasty. He was a professor of anatomy, pathology, and zoology at the University of Halle, in Central Germany. The diverticulum, a congenital remnant of the vitellointestinal duct was named after him. Other eponyms include Meckel's cartilage, Meckel syndrome, and Meckel-Serres law of recapitulation. His concepts in comparative anatomy, embryology, and teratology anticipated Darwin. This review is a short tribute to this legend and his prolific contributions. LEVEL: Historic review, level V.

Soemmerring's work on the nervous system: a view on brain structure and function from the late eighteenth century.

Samuel Thomas Soemmerring (1755-1830) was an encyclopaedic anatomist and one of the most experienced and renowned neuro-anatomists in the late eighteenth century. His description and illustration of the brainstem with its still accepted classification of cranial nerves (1778), the discovery of the acervulus in the epiphysis (1785), his demonstration of the crossing of the optic nerve fibres (1788), and of the macula lutea in the retina of the eye he had discovered in 1791, won him great recognition. Probably, unaware of Francesco Gennari's (1750-1797) and Félix Vicq d'Azyr's (1748-1794) observ…
