Vertebral Comparative Anatomy and Morphological Differences in Anguine Lizards With a Special Reference to Pseudopus apodus.

The article reports on the first detailed vertebral and rib morphology of anguine taxon Pseudopus apodus using micro-computed tomography. A comparison shows significant morphological differences of vertebrae of Pseudopus relative to those of Anguis and Ophisaurus. Usually, there are 55 presacral vertebrae, two sacral, and 95-97 caudal vertebrae. Pseudopus apodus can be defined by 23 diagnostic features concerning the vertebral column. Although zygapophyseal articulation between atlas and axis is well developed in limbed anguid gerrhonotine lizards like Abronia or Barisia, it is absent in the e

Comparative anatomy of the ciliary body of the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) and selected species.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the anatomy of the ciliary body in the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), paying close attention to its vascularization and to compare to those of its distant relative, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana), the amphibious hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) and the aquatic short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus). PROCEDURE: Specimens from each species were preserved in 10% buffered formalin, and observed stereomicroscopically before being embedded in paraffin, sectioned and stained by Masson trichrome, hematoxylin and eosin, and periodic acid-

Human dissection and comparative anatomy: Archaeological evidence for nineteenth-century anatomical practice at University College London.

The history of anatomical dissection in nineteenth-century Britain has largely been reconstructed from archival sources, including legislation, institutional records and medical writings. Archaeological evidence for the material practices of anatomy schools, however, remains comparatively limited. In 2010, redevelopment within the main quadrangle of University College London (UCL) revealed a substantial assemblage of human and animal skeletal remains associated with the institution's early anatomy school. Excavation recovered more than 8700 human skeletal fragments and over 800 animal bones, t

Comparative anatomy of chicken and human forelimb muscles: Implications for human congenital conditions through developmental models.

The chicken embryo is a well-established model for studying the fundamental principles of limb development and has been instrumental in investigating human limb conditions such as polydactyly and the effects of thalidomide. Chicken embryos are accessible, low cost, and can be manipulated both in ovo and in culture. Recent innovations in the genetic modification of chickens, including making transgenic reporter and targeted deletions, have transformed the potential use of the chicken embryo in developmental biology research. Specifically, there is now the potential to model human congenital lim

Using large language models (ChatGPT, Copilot, PaLM, Bard, and Gemini) in Gross Anatomy course: Comparative analysis.

The increasing application of generative artificial intelligence large language models (LLMs) in various fields, including medical education, raises questions about their accuracy. The primary aim of our study was to undertake a detailed comparative analysis of the proficiencies and accuracies of six different LLMs (ChatGPT-4, ChatGPT-3.5-turbo, ChatGPT-3.5, Copilot, PaLM, Bard, and Gemini) in responding to medical multiple-choice questions (MCQs), and in generating clinical scenarios and MCQs for upper limb topics in a Gross Anatomy course for medical students. Selected chatbots were tested,

Comparative study of left vertebral artery revascularization in patients with and without aberrant left vertebral anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: Left vertebral artery revascularization is indicated in surgery involving zone 2 of the aortic arch and is typically accomplished indirectly via subclavian artery revascularization. For aberrant left vertebral anatomy, direct revascularization is indicated. Our objective was to compare the outcomes of direct vertebral artery revascularization with indirect subclavian artery revascularization for treating aortic arch pathology and to identify predictors of mortality. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a single tertiary hospital, including patients who underwent o

Identical anatomy, different symptoms: a comparative case study of median arcuate ligament syndrome in monozygotic twins.

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is a rare clinical entity arising from the extrinsic compression of the coeliac axis by the median arcuate ligament. In this report, we detail a unique presentation involving monozygotic twins, both of whom demonstrated anatomical extrinsic compression of the coeliac axis by the median arcuate ligament. Intriguingly, only one twin manifested clinical symptoms consistent with MALS, despite comparable anatomical compression of the coeliac axis observed in both. This case highlights the potential interplay of a genetic or anatomical predisposition to coelia

Comparative functional anatomy of the epaxial musculature of dogs (Canis familiaris) bred for sprinting vs. fighting.

The axial musculoskeletal system of quadrupedal mammals is not currently well understood despite its functional importance in terms of facilitating postural stability and locomotion. Here we examined the detailed architecture of the muscles of the vertebral column of two breeds of dog, the Staffordshire bull terrier (SBT) and the racing greyhound, which have been selectively bred for physical combat and high speed sprint performance, respectively. Dissections of the epaxial musculature of nine racing greyhounds and six SBTs were carried out; muscle mass, length, and fascicle lengths were measu

Kidney lower pole pelvicaliceal anatomy: comparative analysis between intravenous urogram and three-dimensional helical computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate if there is any advantage of three-dimensional helical computed tomography (3D-HCT) over intravenous urogram (IVU) in the morphometric and morphological analysis of lower pole spatial anatomy of the kidney. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 52 renal collecting systems in 30 patients, ranging in age from 23 to 80 years. The study compared the following features: (1) the angle formed between the lower infundibulum and the renal pelvis (i.e., lower infundibulum-pelvic angle [IPA]), (2) the lower infundibulum diameter (ID), and (3) the spatial distr

Cross-sectional anatomy and comparative ultrasonography of the equine medial femorotibial joint and its related structures.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Injuries of the equine stifle are frequent causes of hindlimb lameness. Ultrasonography is useful for the diagnosis of many soft tissue lesions but, until recently, its application to the equine stifle has been limited to a description of normal and abnormal structures. A comparative study using gross anatomical sections to identify all structures visible on ultrasonographic images of the equine stifle has not previously been reported. OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive comparative cross-sectional atlas of the normal equine medial femorotibial (MFT) joint and

The anatomy of the adult uropodid Fuscouropoda agitans (Arachnida; Acari), with comparative observations on other Acari.

A thin, compressible, lateral suture and ventral plate overlap permit limited movement of the thick and rigid dorsal and ventral plates of Fuscouropoda agitans. Seven pairs of large dermal glands debouch onto the surface. Trochanteral rotation permits defensive leg adpresion and an insectan type of ambulation. The complex hypopharynx-pedipalpal-coxae has a buccal and cheliceral cavity separated by an atriculated epipharynx. The pharynx is Y-shaped in cross section. Extensive paired salivary glands lie above the very long and dexterous 3-segmented chelicerae, and a large pair of coxal glands de

Comparative Anatomy of Polydactyly and the Adult Nail Unit and Its Implications in the Onychofibroblasts/Onychodermis Theory.

Recent studies have proposed the use of the polydactyly nail unit model as a tool for the study of the molecular basis of onychogenesis. However, the histological and immunohistochemical description of this model is still a matter of debate in the literature, and the validity of the concept of the onychodermis used in the histological interpretation of both polydactyly and the adult nail unit has been challenged on the basis of detailed histological studies of adult fingernail units. The aim of this study was to provide new histological and immunohistochemical data on both the adult toenail un

Comparative anatomy of the ovine and human pelvis for laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy: evaluating the effectiveness of the ovine model.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSC) is a functional reconstructive surgery used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in middle-aged women. Although LSC is widely used, its implementation is hindered by perceived technical difficulties and surgical learning curves. Surgeons require adequate experience with LSC prior to performing the procedure on patients to improve their quality of life. This study is aimed at demonstrating the effectiveness of the ovine model (OM) for training and research in LSC, while also comparing anatomical differences between ovine and human m

Comparative study of the anatomy, CT and MR images of the lateral collateral ligaments of the ankle joint.

Clinical diagnosis of lateral collateral ligamentous injury caused by ankle sprains depends primarily on clinical signs, and X-ray and CT images. None of these, however, provide direct or accurate information about ligamentous injury. MRI has long been testified as a useful tool in the demonstration of ligaments due to its good resolution of soft tissues. We confirmed the appearance of the lateral collateral ligaments of the ankle joints on MR images by comparing MR images with CT images of the ligaments enhanced by coating with contrast medium after dissection of six cadaver feet. Compare stu

Comparative anatomy of the arterial vascularization of the hippocampus in man and in experimental animals (cat, rabbit and sheep).

The studies were performed by the authors' injection method on 30 human brains and 80 animal ones. The cerebral arteries were injected with synthetic coloured latex and then prepared in an operating microscope. It was found that the main source of arterial supply of both the human and animal hippocampus is the posterior cerebral artery. However, this artery has different origins in the arterial circle of the brain in man, cat, rabbit and sheep. Comparative investigations have also proved that the hippocampal vascular system in man and animals is very similar. It is formed by branches of the po

Wiring the ocular surface: A focus on the comparative anatomy and molecular regulation of sensory innervation of the cornea.

The cornea is richly innervated with sensory nerves that function to detect and clear harmful debris from the surface of the eye, promote growth and survival of the corneal epithelium and hasten wound healing following ocular disease or trauma. Given their importance to eye health, the neuroanatomy of the cornea has for many years been a source of intense investigation. Resultantly, complete nerve architecture maps exist for adult human and many animal models and these maps reveal few major differences across species. Interestingly, recent work has revealed considerable variation across specie

Orbital Floor Fractures Comparing Different Kinds of Reconstruction: A Proposal for Restoration of Physiological Anatomy.

The most effective treatment for orbital fractures is still under debate and different strategies are proposed in the literature. All such strategies focus on reconstruction of the orbital structure, neglecting the main function of the medial and inferior walls, these latter being constructed so as to break during high energy trauma. The aim of the authors is to highlight the difference between different reconstructive techniques in an orbital fracture restoration, being inclined to favor repair over reconstruction of the orbital floor, assuming that a second trauma could happen and reconstruc

Comparative musculoskeletal anatomy of chameleon limbs, with implications for the evolution of arboreal locomotion in lizards and for teratology.

Chameleon species have recently been adopted as models for evo-devo and macroevolutionary processes. However, most anatomical and developmental studies of chameleons focus on the skeleton, and information about their soft tissues is scarce. Here, we provide a detailed morphological description based on contrast enhanced micro-CT scans and dissections of the adult phenotype of all the forelimb and hindlimb muscles of the Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) and compare these muscles with those of other chameleons and lizards. We found the appendicular muscle anatomy of chameleons to be surp
