It has been estimated that approximately 30% of the population is unable to detect the odor of androstenone. These estimates, however, were made using tests and criteria optimized for identifying detection. Thirty-six women with acne vulgaris who consulted gynecologist with complaints of hirsutism, infertility, menorrhagia, or oligomenorrhea were evaluated for an androgen abnormality with assays for testosterone (T), androstenedione (A), and dehydro-epi-androsterone (DHEA). Glucocorticoid (GC) inhibits testosterone production in adult Leydig cells by the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). However, whether GC affects the development of Leydig cells is unclear. The goal of the present study is to investigate the effects of GC on steroidogenesis of rat progenitor Leydig cells (PLCs) in vitro. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) on androstenone metabolism and associated gene expression in hepatocytes isolated from intact (boars) and castrated (barrows) male pigs.
