Caseous lymphadenitis in small ruminants.

Caseous lymphadenitis is a contagious bacterial disease that affects sheep and goats. It is characterized by abscess formation in the skin, internal and external lymph nodes, and internal organs. The causative agent is Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. The disease can become endemic in a herd or flock and is difficult to eradicate by virtue of its poor response to therapeutics, its ability to persist in the environment, and the limitations in detecting subclinically affected animals. The disease causes significant economic impact on the small ruminant industry through decreased meat yield, d

Review: Livestock health as a climate solution.

Livestock production contributes substantially to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, yet the role of animal health in mitigating these emissions remains under-recognised within both research and policy frameworks. Diseases reduce productivity, impair reproductive performance, increase mortality and culling rates, and prolong production cycles, thereby increasing GHG emissions intensity. This review brings together current evidence linking animal health and GHG emissions across major disease categories and production systems, including parasitic infections, mastitis, and reproductive disord

Field trial of efficacy of the Leish-tec® vaccine against canine leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum in an endemic area with high transmission rates.

BACKGROUND: Because domestic dogs are reservoir hosts for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Brazil, one of the approaches used to reduce human disease incidence is to cull infected dogs. However, the results of controlled intervention trials based on serological screening of dogs and killing of seropositive animals are equivocal. A prophylactic vaccine to protect dogs from being infectious to the sand fly vector could be an effective strategy to provide sustained control. Here, we investigated whether a currently licensed commercial subunit rA2 protein-saponin vaccine (Leish-tec®) had an addition

Opportunistic viral surveillance confirms the ongoing disease threat grey squirrels pose to sympatric red squirrel populations in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Red Squirrels United was a UK landscape-scale grey squirrel management programme undertaken between 2016 and 2020. METHODS: A total of 11034 grey squirrels were removed by culling, with 1506 necropsied and 1405 suitable for adenovirus (AdV) or squirrelpox virus (SQPV) quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis. Spleen, lip or hair were extracted, and DNA was isolated, with samples tested in duplicate by qPCR. RESULTS: Of 1378 tissue samples, 43% were positive for AdV and 10% for SQPV. Of 1031 hair samples, 11% were positive for AdV and 10% for SQPV. Overall, 762 of 1405 (54%) animals were

Control strategies for wildlife tuberculosis in Ireland.

The principal domestic maintenance host for Mycobacterium bovis is infected cattle. In countries where comprehensive surveillance schemes have been applied, tuberculosis rarely affects an animal to the extent that it presents with clinical disease. In the latter stages of an eradication campaign, the aim is to maintain the disease-free status of clear herds and eliminate foci of infection in herds as well as restricting movement of infected animals from these herds, other than to slaughter. However, the eradication of tuberculosis from cattle herds may be compromised if infected wildlife speci

Economic analysis of animal disease outbreaks--BSE and Bluetongue disease as examples.

Although there is a long tradition of research on animal disease control, economic evaluation of control measures is rather limited in veterinary medicine. This may, on the one hand, be due to the different types of costs and refunds and the different people and organizations bearing them, such as animal holders, county, region, state or European Union, but it may also be due to the fact that economic analyses are both complex and time consuming. Only recently attention has turned towards economic analysis in animal disease control. Examples include situations, when decisions between different

Selective culling and the potential persistence of lumpy skin disease in cattle herds: insights from a mechanistic transmission model.

The first epidemic of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in France was detected in June 2025, with a total of 117 outbreaks recorded by the end of the year. This fast-spreading vector-borne disease of cattle prompted the implementation of strict control measures, including total depopulation of affected herds, resulting in the culling of more than 3500 cattle. Over the course of the epidemic, this measure became increasingly unacceptable, leading to major protests. To contribute to this veterinary public health debate, we present a mathematical model, accounting for both cattle and vector populations, t

Association of body weight at first calving with growth, health, and reproductive performance during rearing and with subsequent milk production, health, and culling risk in dairy cows in the first and second lactation from a single commercial dairy farm.

The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the association between BW at first calving and growth, health, and reproductive performance during the rearing period, as well as subsequent milk production, calving-related events, transition cow health, and culling risk in the first and second lactation in dairy cows from a single commercial dairy herd in northern Germany. The final dataset consisted of 3,891 primiparous cows that calved between 2017 and 2021, 1,894 of which were followed until their second lactation. Data were extracted from a commercial dairy herd management

Anti-Müllerian hormone and Oestradiol as markers of future reproductive success in juvenile gilts.

There is a need for an early marker for reproductive success in gilts as the traditional process for selecting breeding females is inefficient. There is evidence that circulating anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is indicative of ovarian reserve, antral follicle populations, gonadotropin responsiveness and fertility in various species other than the pig. Additionally, oestradiol (E2) has been shown to mark antral follicle populations in cattle and pregnancy outcomes in women, after gonadotropin treatment. The aims of this study were to determine whether 1) serum levels of AMH or E2, prior to or aft

Generation of a specific-pathogen-free baboon colony.

We undertook establishing an SPF baboon colony in response to requests from researchers. To enable the widest possible future use of SPF baboons, our aim was to develop an SPF colony of baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis) free of 12 target viruses: 5 herpesviruses, 4 retroviruses, simian virus 40, measles, and monkeypox. Infant baboons were removed from their mothers within 24 h of birth and nursery-reared. Groups of 3 to 8 age-matched conspecifics were isolated in separate rooms for 1 y while undergoing repeated testing for target viruses. During the initial 7 y of the SPF program, 171 infants w

Targeted strategies for the management of wildlife diseases: the case of brucellosis in Alpine ibex.

The management of infectious diseases in wildlife reservoirs is challenging and faces several limitations. However, detailed knowledge of host-pathogen systems often reveal heterogeneity among the hosts' contribution to transmission. Management strategies targeting specific classes of individuals and/or areas, having a particular role in transmission, could be more effective and more acceptable than population-wide interventions. In the wild population of Alpine ibex (Capra ibex-a protected species) of the Bargy massif (French Alps), females transmit brucellosis (Brucella melitensis) infection

The distribution of Mycobacterium bovis infection in naturally infected badgers.

Populations of Eurasian badgers (Meles meles) with tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis infection) are a significant reservoir of infection for cattle in Ireland and the United Kingdom. In this study the distribution of infection, histological lesions and gross lesions was determined in a sample of 132 culled badgers from naturally-infected wild populations. Badgers were culled when an epidemiological investigation following a tuberculosis breakdown in a cattle herd implicated badgers as the probable source of infection. The definition of tuberculosis infection was based on the isolation of M. bo

Effectiveness of an antimicrobial treatment scheme in a confined glanders outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Glanders is a contagious and fatal zoonotic disease of solipeds caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia (B.) mallei. Although regulations call for culling of diseased animals, certain situations e.g. wild life conservation, highly valuable breeding stock, could benefit from effective treatment schemes and post-exposure prophylaxis. RESULTS: Twenty three culture positive glanderous horses were successfully treated during a confined outbreak by applying a treatment protocol of 12 weeks duration based on the parenteral administration of enrofloxacin and trimethoprim plus s

Interaction of the role of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDS).

Most significant change in the evolution of the influenza virus is the rapid growth of the Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) on a global scale. These industrial agricultural operations have the potential of housing thousands of animals in a relatively small area. Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) event can be considered as a shift in the pathogen-host-environment interplay characteristics described by Engering et al. (2013). These changes in the host-environment and the disease ecology are key to creating novel transmission patterns and selection of novel pathogens with a modifi

Listeriosis in sheep. Isolation of Listeria monocytogenes from organs of slaughtered animals and dead animals submitted for post-mortem examination.

The udders from 13 culled ewes and liver, spleen, kidney, lung and brain from 15 lambs, 11 months old, were examined for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) at slaughter. Lm was isolated from 1 of 13 udders, from 6 of the 15 brains and from 0–4 of the other organs from each of the 15 lambs. Internal organs from 68 sheep submitted for post-mortem examination were examined in the same way. Lm was isolated from 25 of these animals. Lm was isolated from the brain of 7 of 9 animals with encephalitis, and from 0–3 of the other 4 organs examined. Lm was also isolated from 10–20 % of the organ

Q fever vaccination: Australian animal science and veterinary students' One Health perspectives on Q fever prevention.

Unvaccinated animal science and veterinary students are at risk of Q fever, a vaccine-preventable zoonotic disease transmitted from animals … fever. Over three-quarters of students reported transmission of Q fever via aerosol inhalation and animal culling, whilst other modes including sexual transmission between humans (7%) was poorly identified. The majority of students reported exposure to cattle, sheep and goats. Of those who reported vaccination status, 5% veterinary and 61% animal science studen …

Avian influenza outbreak investigation and containment.

Influenza A viruses cause pandemics at recurring yet unpredictable intervals. The past three pandemics had origin from birds. Although the viruses of avian influenza are not easily transmitted to humans, this may change due to either mutation or genetic reassortment. There is still an opportunity to pre-empt the pandemic. It is believed that if the surveillance system for animal health is able to detect infection in poultry quickly followed by rapid and safe culling of infected and exposed poultry and the surviellance system for human health is able to detect first human cases quickly followed

Epidemiological impact of Neospora caninum in Victorian dairy farms: Modelling effective control strategies.

Neospora caninum is a major cause of abortion in cattle worldwide, causing significant economic losses. Despite Victoria's critical role in Australian dairy production, little is known about the local epidemiology of N. caninum and the effectiveness of control measures. This study aimed to evaluate infection dynamics and management strategies in Victorian dairy farms. Field data were collected from five dairy farms in Gippsland, including 1029 cow and calf samples. Vertical, horizontal and colostral transmission were assessed through longitudinal monitoring. Diagnostic performance of PCR and e

The price of the precautionary principle: cost-effectiveness of BSE intervention strategies in The Netherlands.

Since 1996, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle has been linked to a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), a fatal brain disease in man. This paper assessed the cost-effectiveness of BSE control strategies instituted by the European Commission. In a Monte Carlo simulation model, a non-intervention baseline scenario was compared to three intervention strategies: removal of specified risk materials from slaughter animals, post-mortem testing for BSE and the culling of feed and age cohorts of BSE cases. The food risk in the baseline scenario ranged from 16.98 lost life yea
