Animal tissues have diverse architectures and cell behaviors across the epithelial-mesenchymal spectrum. Cell adhesion mediated by classical cadherins is foundational. Cadherins nucleate complexes of dozens of proteins connecting junctions to the cytoskeleton and signaling downstream. Many junctional proteins are well-studied in epithelia, but less is known about roles during mesenchymal migration. The nascent myotubes of the pupal Drosophila testis provide an excellent model for N-cadherin mediated mesenchymal migration. We combined a proximity proteomics dataset of adherens junction proteins

Many cell types migrate collectively, a process critical for animal development and co-opted in some medical disorders. Thus, uncovering the molecular regulation of collective cell migration is of broad interest, yet this process remains understudied as compared to individual cell motility. Both collective and individual cell movements rely on similar mechanisms to change cell shapes and adhesiveness. Although grouped cells face the added challenge of maintaining coordination and communication, they can then leverage group-level advantages, like animals in a pack. How motile cells work togethe

In vitro peripheral blood lymphocyte transformation and peritoneal macrophage migration in the presence of purified protein derivative have been studied at weekly intervals in Freund's complete adjuvant sensitized guinea-pigs. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from half of the sensitized animals when cultured with purified protein derivative 1 week after immunization manifested more than double the thymidine-2-14C incorporation of the unstimulated cells. By the 3rd week after immunization the response of the lymphocytes to antigen was maximal. The average of peritoneal cell migration inhibition was

The adult respiratory distress syndrome and bacterial pneumonia are both characterized by an influx of neutrophils into the lung. The neutrophil has been implicated as having a "pathological" role in adult respiratory distress syndrome, in contrast to its role in bacterial pneumonia. We hypothesized that processes resulting in neutrophil recruitment to the lung are distinct, depending on whether the inflammatory stimulus arises in the intravascular or the alveolar compartment of the lung. Anesthetized sheep with lung lymph fistulas were utilized to access the three compartments of the lung rel

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of the CXCL10/CXCR3 axis regulating Th1 cell differentiation and migration through the PI3K/AKT pathway in chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS).
METHODS: Experimental autoimmune prostatitis (EAP) model, a well-described and validated animal model of CP/CPPS, was used in our study. After treatment with CXCL10, the severity of EAP and Th1 cell proportion were respectively measured by HE stains, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. Then, the protein expression of the PI3K/AKT pathway in CXCL10/CXCR3-regulated Th1 cell differentia

OBJECTIVE: Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) migration and proliferation are key components of vascular inflammation that may lead to atherosclerosis and restenosis, in which cytokines are considered as pivotal factors regarding recruitment of VSMC. A member of recently described family of chemokines, chemokine-like factor 1 (CKLF1), displays a wide spectrum of chemotaxis. This study investigated the role of CKLF1 in VSMC migration and proliferation during the process of vascular inflammation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: : The effects of CKLF1 on migration, proliferation and neointimal formation we

In many species, migration can increase parasite burdens or diversity as hosts move between diverse habitats with different parasite assemblages. On the other hand, migration can reduce parasite prevalence by letting animals escape infested habitats, or by exacerbating the costs of parasitism, leading to culling or dropout. How the balance between these negative and positive interactions is maintained or how they will change under anthropogenic pressure remains poorly understood. Here, we summarize the relationship between migration and infectious disease in monarch butterflies, finding that m

Throughout the world, fragmentation of landscapes by human activities has constrained the opportunity for large herbivores to migrate. Conflict between people and wildlife results when migrating animals transmit disease to livestock, damage property, and threaten human safety. Mitigating this conflict requires understanding the forces that shape migration patterns. Bison Bos bison migrating from Yellowstone National Park into the state of Montana during winter and spring concern ranchers on lands surrounding the park because bison can transmit brucellosis (Brucella abortus) to cattle. Migratio

We developed two models of sepsis with different degrees of severity, sublethal and lethal sepsis, induced by cecal ligation and puncture. Lethal sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (L-CLP) resulted in failure of neutrophil migration to the infection site and high mortality. Treatment of septic animals with aminoguanidine (AG), a nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor, precluded the failure of neutrophil migration and protected the animals from death. However, cytokine-induced NO synthase (iNOS)-deficient (iNOS(-/-)) mice subjected to L-CLP did not present neutrophil migration failure,

Cell-mediated immunity to Leptospira pomona was measured in goats by the leukocyte-migration inhibition test (LMIT) and microassay for stimulation of protein synthesis (SPS) with 3H-leucine. L. pomona soluble antigen was used in both tests. The migration indices in the group of goats infected with L. pomona were significantly lower (less than .001) as compared to control. The migration zones of the unstimulated peripheral blood leukocytes in the infected group were significantly smaller (less than .001) than those of the control. The SPS test was strongly positive in test animals and was negat

Purified cytoplasmic extracts from Nocardia asteroides and N. brasiliensis elicit delayed hypersensitivity in Nocardia-sensitized guinea pigs. The differences in skin reactivity clearly show that it is possible to distinguish between different Nocardia species. When peritoneal exudate cells from the latter animals were obtained and treated with the purified cytoplasmic extracts, their migration was inhibited to a significant degree only by means of the homologous antigen. A mild delayed reactivity was observed when the cytoplasmic antigens were used as skin test materials on animals sensitized

Guinea pigs were fed a vitamin C-deficient diet and at various time periods thereafter their peritoneal cells were tested for biological activity. The serum levels of vitamin C in the deficient animals indicated a progressive state of ascorbic acid deficiency with time and this correlated well with clinical signs and symptoms of scurvy. Fewer macrophages were obtained from the peritoneal cavities of deficient animals and in structural appearance under the phase contrast and light microscope they were smaller in size. They showed no significant impairment in phagocytosis of bacterial cells. The

Balaenoptera acutorostrata, as a first-class protected animal in China, is listed in the IUCN catalogue and the CITES appendix. They migrate in various sea areas around the world. Driven by environmental change and human activities, it has become one of the most endangered taxa globally. To further understand the distribution and migratory corridors of B. acutorostrata, we assessed their suitable habitats by establishing a seasonal species combining distribution model based on utilized data records and seven environmental variables, as well as their seasonal migration corridor by circuit conne

In a study designed to assess the potential sensitizing and granulomagenic capacities of selected metallic salts, rabbits were inoculated intradermally with zirconium aluminum glycinate (ZAG), sodium zirconium lactate (NZL), aluminum chlorhydrate (ACH), BeSO 4, and ovalbumin (OVA) by single and multiple injections. Animals immunized with BeSO4 and with OVA developed delayed skin reactivity as well as antigen-specific alveolar macrophage migration inhibition. Neither single nor multiple injections of ZAG or ACH resulted in clear-cut positive skin reactivity, macrophage migration inhibitory fact

Breast cancer (BC) is a highly heterogeneous and aggressive disease with high mortality. Curcumol, a major bioactive component from Curcumae kwangsiensis, has shown antitumor activity by targeting nucleolin (NCL) and its interaction with ERα36. NCL is an RNA-binding protein that interacts with miR-206, a tumor-suppressive miRNA that inhibits EMT and invasion by regulating target gene expression. However, whether curcumol's effect on BC invasion and migration, as well as the NCL/ERα36 interaction, is regulated by miR-206 remains unclear. Cell migration and invasion were assessed using wound hea

CASE DESCRIPTION: 2 juvenile (17 and 19 months of age) male American bison (Bison bison) were examined because of acute bilateral hind limb weakness and ataxia; 1 animal also had urinary incontinence.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Given the clinical signs and rapid deterioration in the condition of these 2 animals, obtaining a definitive diagnosis was considered essential to minimizing the risk of disease in the remaining bison herd and among other animals at the facility. Therefore, both affected animals were euthanized. At necropsy, no gross abnormalities were seen. Histologic examination of secti

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy (EUS-GE) is widely used in patients with gastric outlet obstruction (GOO). Recurrence of obstruction symptoms caused by stent migration is the major reason for reintervention in EUS-GE. To solve this problem, we proposed developing a double anchor lock (DAL) fixing stent method for EUS-GE. The safety and efficacy of the DAL fixing stent method were evaluated in this study.
METHODS: Sixteen Bama miniature pigs were randomly divided into an experimental group (n = 8) and a control group (n = 8). A gastric outlet obstruction model was es

Non-physical barriers for migrating fish, such as effluent plumes discharged by sewage treatment plants (WWTPs), are hardly considered, and field studies on this topic are very scarce. The encounter with these plumes however may evoke behavioural responses in fish and could delay or (partially) block the migration. In this study, the behavioural responses of 40 acoustically-tagged silver eel (Anguilla anguilla) were monitored in situ, when confronting a WWTP effluent plume during their downstream migration in the canal Eems, the Netherlands. Their behavioural responses and the potential blocki
