Human anisakiasis, an increasing medical problem in Japan, was recently identified in 7 people in Hawaii. We report an 8th case occurring in an individual who had consumed a large amount of raw squid sushi at a restaurant. The diagnosis of anisakiasis in this patient was made after the parasite was identified by X-ray. To our knowledge, radiographic demonstration of the anisakiasis parasite has not been reported in Hawaii previously.

Since 1972, Japan and some other countries such as the USA have seen a sudden increase in cases of anisakiasis (infection with Anisakis sp.) and codworm an isakiasis (infection with the codworm, Pseudoterranova [= Phocanema] decipiens). Larval stages of these nematodes occur in the muscles of a variety of fish and squid, and ingestion of raw and undercooked fish or squid is the prime route of human infection. Thus the Japanese style of eating sashimi (sliced raw fish fillet) and the increasing popularity of sushi bars where such dishes are served, has often been suggested as contributing to th…

INTRODUCTION: Anisakiasis is a parasitic disease caused by anisakid nematode larvae, which are found in raw or undercooked fish. It occurs more frequently in the digestive tract, but has also been reported outside the gastrointestinal tract. This report details a case of rare hepatic anisakiasis that was initially diagnosed as metastatic rectal cancer.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 60-year-old male underwent radical resection for stage III rectal cancer followed by adjuvant chemotherapy for six months. Seven months after surgery, a new, 10 mm diameter area of low density was seen in segment 4/8 mar…

Parasites of the family Anisakidae cause enteric parasitic zoonoses developing after consumption of inadequately cooked marine fish. Cases of such diseases are reported mainly from Japan or other countries where raw or uncooked fish are traditionally consumed. The presented short communication briefly reports detection of larvae of Pseudoterranova spp., parasites of the family Anisakidae, in a fresh chilled angler-fish (Lophius piscatorius) bought at a retail store in the Czech Republic.

Enteric anisakiasis is relatively rare, and the preoperative diagnosis is difficult. We report 3 cases of enteric anisakiasis: 1 was confirmed by operation, and the other 2 cases were suspected by the patient history. The 1st patient was a 48-year-old female presenting with abdominal pain. An abdominal computed tomography scan showed a dilated small intestine and accumulation of ascites. We performed partial resection of the small intestine, and an Anisakis nematode was found on the wall of the resected bowel. After surgery, the detailed history revealed that the patient consumed a raw sardine…

PURPOSE: We studied the utility of sonography in the early diagnosis of anisakiasis of the small intestine.
METHODS: The imaging findings and clinical data of 12 patients with proven small intestinal anisakiasis were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: Dominant sonographic findings were ascites, small bowel dilatation, and focal edema of Kerckring's folds.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients who have acute abdomen after recent ingestion of seafood and in whom ascites, small bowel dilatation, and focal edema of Kerckring's folds are seen by sonography should be suspected of having small intestinal anisakia…

A case with esophageal anisakiasis accompanied by reflux esophagitis is described. A 38-year-old man visited our hospital with complaints of heartburn and disturbance of food passage about seven hours after eating raw cuttlefish. The first esophagogastroscopy revealed an anisakis larva invading the squamocolumnar junction. Near the anisakis larva, a whitish exudate was demonstrated in the distal esophagus just proximal to the squamocolumnar junction. An anisakis larva was easily extracted from the esophagus by forceps. Reflux esophagitis with whitish exudative mucosal lesions and an area of li…

Gastric anisakiasis was an incidental finding on gastroscopy of a 48-year-old man known to have AIDS. At that time the patient had been symptom-free, the test having been performed to check on an ulcerative Candida oesophagitis. The Anisakis larva was extracted through the gastroscope and there has been no recurrence. The history suggested a chronic course. The unusual absence of symptoms suggests that the immunodeficiency had influenced the pathogenesis of the parasitic disease.

The first probable human case of pulmonary anisakiasis is reported. A 37-year-old Japanese person in California developed pleural effusion after consumption of raw salmon at a seafood restaurant in San Francisco. A marked eosinophilia was noted in the blood and pleural exudate. The patient was tested for helminthic infections by intradermal, complement fixation, Ouchterlony, and immunoelectrophoresis tests using antigens of various worm species. A specific precipitin band was recognized only with Anisakis (Type I larvae) antigen.

A 49-year-old woman was admitted with gastrointestinal symptoms and imaging consistent with duodeno-ileitis. Her clinical course was complicated by mesenteric ischaemia, requiring resection of a 45-cm ileal segment. A pre-adult Anisakis spp. larva was identified within a mesenteric nodule through an innovative diagnostic approach combining histopathological analysis with shotgun metagenomic analysis.

A 61-year-old male with no relevant past medical history underwent a colonoscopy for routine screening of colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy revealed a pearly and hard submucosal lesion of less than 10 mm in diameter in the ascending colon, with normal mucosa. An abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) scan was performed, which was normal. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) was performed and the lesion appeared to originate from the muscularis propia. Thus, the muscularis propia and part of the serosa of the colonic wall were cut and the perforation was finally closed with hemoclips.
