[Diagnosis and management of ankyloglossia in young children].

Ankyloglossia is a common condition. Its prevalence is between 3.2% and 4.8% depending on the series and is largely underestimated given the fact of non-diagnosis when the symptoms are limited. It is defined as a short lingual frenulum resulting in a limitation of the lingual mobility. It is due to a defect in cellular apoptosis embryogenesis between the floor of the mouth and tongue. The result is a fibrous and short lingual frenulum. Several classifications were used to make the diagnosis. However, these are the clinical implications, particularly on food and primarily breastfeeding in the b…

Skeletal and dental characteristics in subjects with ankyloglossia.

BACKGROUND: The role of ankyloglossia in etiology of malocclusion is not much discussed over the years. The aim of the present study was to assess the skeletal and dental characteristics in subjects with ankyloglossia. METHODS: Fifty-seven subjects diagnosed with ankyloglossia (group 1) were compared with 60 subjects (group 2) without ankyloglossia, who had class I skeletal base. Ankyloglossia was diagnosed and graded (mild, moderate, severe and very severe) using Kortlow's method. SNA, SNB, ANB, Go-Gn-SN angle, FMA, maxillary and mandibular intercanine widths and intermolar widths, tooth siz…

[Tongue mobility in ankyloglossia with regard to articulation].

A sound is created as a result of several breathing, phonetic and articulation positions and movements which take place in the articulation … he general opinion "the tongue frenulum has no influence on tongue mobility". However, persons with ankyloglossia form at least one of the above-mentioned phonemes incorrectly to a slight, medium or high degree and frenotomy is required to make improvement of speech by a speech therapist effective. In opinion of many physicians and speech therapists " frenotomy …

Are the features of ankyloglossia limited to the lingual fraenum?

A 16-year-old male patient presented with ankyloglossia accompanied by a complaint of forceful spurting of saliva from the mouth and a unilateral swelling in the submandibular region. Following surgical relief of the ankyloglossia, the spurting of saliva had virtually ceased and the submandibular swelling disappeared without recurrence.

[A pathological consideration of ankyloglossia and lingual myoplasty].

Despite the curious role of tongue in the development of oro-facial structures the tongue remains as rather quiescent organ without bony skeleton. But it is said that neuro-muscular complex of tongue is important in the developmental and functional process. Ankyloglossia and macroglossia are occasionally implicated in the oral diseases. Many authors supposed that the ankyloglossia and macroglossia might produce various abnormal oro-facial growth, such as bimaxillary or mandibular protrusion and anterior open bite, etc. We have designed the classification of ankyloglossia by measuring the media…

Macroglossia and ankyloglossia in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Since the recognition of the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome was first noted in 1963, the number of associated anomalies has vastly increased. The rate of appearance of this abnormality is 1 in 13,5000 births. This article presents a case that includes macroglossia and ankyloglossia along with a bifid uvula and a submucous cleft of the palate. A discussion of treatment follows.

Familial ankyloglossia (tongue-tie): a case report.

Ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) is a congenital anomaly with a prevalence of 4-5% and characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenulum. For unknown reasons the abnormality seems to be more common in males. The pathogenesis of ankyloglossia is not known. The authors report a family with isolated ankyloglossia inherited as an autosomal dominant or recessive trait. The identification of the defective gene(s) in these patients might reveal novel information on the pathogenesis of this disorder.

Frenuloplasty was performed to correct the complete ventral ankyloglossia. Immediately after surgery, the tongue was more mobile, and during recheck examinations, the dogs appeared to be able to use their tongues normally and could protrude their tongues when panting. They had gained weight and weighed almost as much as t …

Autosomal-dominant ankyloglossia and tooth number anomalies.

Ankyloglossia is a congenital oral anomaly characterized by the presence of a hypertrophic lingual frenulum. It frequently accompanies X-linked cleft palate and is sometimes seen alone due to mutations in the gene encoding the transcription factor TBX22, while knockout of Lgr5 in the mouse results in ankyloglossia. The aim of the present study was to characterize the phenotype and to verify sequence variations in the LGR5 gene in a Brazilian family with ankyloglossia associated with tooth number anomalies. Twelve individuals of three generations were submitted to physical, oral, and radiograph…

Ankyloglossia in Children, a Cause of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea: Case Report of Paediatric Ankyloglossia and Sleep Apnoea: DISE Resolves the Mystery.

Tongue mobility is an obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) marker and myofunctional therapy (MFT) target. For this reason, all paediatric patients with sleep-disordered breathing should require a combined functional assessment from an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist and a phonoaudiologist to confirm or rule out the presence of ankyloglossia. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a 13-year-old girl diagnosed with severe OSA and a significant decrease of 94% in her apnoea index (AI), requiring frenotomy with an immediate postoperative change in the tongue position. A drug-induced sleep en…

Diode Laser Frenectomy: A Torch of Freedom for Ankyloglossia.

Ankyloglossia, also known as tongue-tie, is a rare congenital anomaly of the oral cavity that not only causes difficulties in breastfeeding and teeth cleaning but also causes difficulty in speech articulation. Our patient faced difficulty in freely moving his tongue because of the short lingual frenulum wherein laser lingual frenectomy was indicated. The patient was treated successfully with a soft tissue diode laser having a wavelength of 445 nanometers. The use of a low-wavelength diode laser becomes relatively complimentary to standard scalpel surgery because of patient consolation, offers …

Ankyloglossia and malocclusion: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia is a congenital alteration that affects the tongue's mobility, influencing craniofacial development; however, its association with malocclusion is still unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the association between ankyloglossia and malocclusion in patients. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies that investigated the association between malocclusion and the presence of ankyloglossia in any age group, used any assessment tool to diagnose ankyloglossia, and considered all…
