A Review of Discovery Profiling of PIWI-Interacting RNAs and Their Diverse Functions in Metazoans.

PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) that perform crucial biological functions in metazoans and def … ults in metazoans. Ubiquitously expressed piRNAs have been discovered in the soma and germ lines in Annelida, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Crustacea, Arthropoda, and Mollusca, but they are limited to germ lines in Chordata. The roles of piRNAs in TE silencing, gene expression regulation, epigenetic regulation, embryonic development, immune response, and associ …

Ecotoxicity of arsenic contaminated sludge after mixing with soils and addition into composting and vermicomposting processes.

Sludge coming from remediation of groundwater contaminated by industry is usually managed as hazardous waste despite it might be considered for further processing as a source of nutrients. The ecotoxicity of phosphorus rich sludge contaminated with arsenic was evaluated after mixing with soil and cultivation with Sinapis alba, and supplementation into composting and vermicomposting processes. The Enchytraeus crypticus and Folsomia candida reproduction tests and the Lactuca sativa root growth test were used. Invertebrate bioassays reacted sensitively to arsenic presence in soil-sludge mixtures.

Integrated multi-approaches reveal unique metabolic mechanisms of Vestimentifera to adapt to deep sea.

BACKGROUND: Vestimentiferan tubeworms are deep-sea colonizers, in which chemoautotrophic symbiosis was first observed. These animals are gutless and depend on endosymbiotic bacteria for organic compound synthesis and nutrition supply. Taxonomically, vestimentiferans belong to Siboglinidae and Annelida. Compared with other siboglinids, vestimentiferans are distinguished by high tolerance of the prevailing hydrogen sulfide in hydrothermal vents, rapid growth in local habitats, and a physical structure consisting of a thick chitinous tube. The metabolic mechanisms contributing to these features r…

Analysis of Schistosoma mansoni genes shared with Deuterostomia and with possible roles in host interactions.

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma mansoni is a blood helminth parasite that causes schistosomiasis, a disease that affects 200 million people in the world. Many orthologs of known mammalian genes have been discovered in this parasite and evidence is accumulating that some of these genes encode proteins linked to signaling pathways in the parasite that appear to be involved with growth or development, suggesting a complex co-evolutionary process. RESULTS: In this work we found 427 genes conserved in the Deuterostomia group that have orthologs in S. mansoni and no members in any nematodes and insects so

Chromosome-scale genome assembly and gene annotation of the hydrothermal vent annelid Alvinella pompejana yield insight into animal evolution in extreme environments.

BACKGROUND: The Pompeii worm Alvinella pompejana, a terebellid annelid, has long been an exemplar of a metazoan that lives in an extreme environment, on the chimney wall of deep-sea hydrothermal vents, but this very environment has made it difficult to study. Comprehensive assessment of Alvinella pompejana genome content, and the factors that could explain its ability to thrive in seemingly hostile conditions has been lacking. RESULTS: We report the chromosome-level genome sequence of Alvinella pompejana and population-level sequence variants. We produced a set of gene models and analysed the

Dangerous marine life.

All physicians must be educated in treating injuries incurred when a diver comes into contact with any dangerous marine life. Stinging invertebrates are the most commonly encountered dangerous marine animals. Venomous vertebrate marine animals are less common than stinging invertebrates and easier to recognize. However, they may be much more deadly. Sharks pose the greatest danger to divers. However, bites from other marine animals can be painful, become infected and require extensive medical treatment.

Physiological and pharmacological studies on annelid and nematode body wall muscle.

1. This review covers the pharmacology and physiology of the body wall muscle systems of nematodes and annelids. 2. Both acetylcholine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) play important roles in the control of body wall muscle in both phyla. In annelids and nematodes, acetylcholine is the excitatory neuromuscular transmitter while GABA is the inhibitory neuromuscular transmitter. In addition, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) has a modulatory role at annelid body wall muscle but little if any effect on nematode body wall muscle. 3. The acetylcholine receptor of the body wall muscle can be classified a

Genetic diversity and population structure of penis fish (Urechis unicinctus) based on mitochondrial and nuclear gene markers.

Urechis unicinctus is distributed only in Bohai Gulf of China and Korean and Japanese coast. The wild populations of this species have sharply declined in China and Japan. We collected 105 samples from six localities of Bohai Gulf and Korea coast, and investigated genetic diversity and population structure with mitochondrial COI, 16S-rRNA and nuclear 28S-rRNA gene fragments. Genetic diversity of U. unicinctus based on COI sequences was still high (Hd: 0.9595, π: 0.0101), however, 28S-rRNA gene sequences showed low level of genetic diversity (Hd: 0.4084, π: 0.0007). Based on COI sequences, FST
