Spectral-YOLOv13: A Dual-Domain Vision-Mamba Sensing Framework for Fine-Grained Coral Health Assessment and Continuous Ecological Forecasting.

Coral reefs are among the most important and vulnerable marine ecosystems worldwide. AI-powered underwater visual monitoring has become essential for effective reef conservation, yet current methods still face severe limitations: spectral ambiguity caused by underwater turbidity, fine-grained confusion in early coral health assessment, and discrete forecasting models that cannot represent continuous ecological degradation dynamics. To address these issues, we propose Spectral-YOLOv13, a dual-domain vision-Mamba sensing framework for high-precision coral health evaluation and continuous ecologi

Environmental Concentrations of Herbicide Prometryn Increase the Susceptibility of Reef-Building Corals to Nitrate Stress.

Herbicide and nitrate pollution frequently co-occur in coastal waters, while their combined effect on corals has been a critical knowledge gap. Although corals can exhibit acclimation to nitrate enrichment, it is unclear whether this acclimation persists under coexposure to PSII herbicides. Here, we investigated the combined effects of nitrate and the PSII herbicide prometryn on the reef-building coralAcropora hyacinthusby integrating physiology, ultrastructure, and host-symbiont multiomics. The results demonstrate that prometryn acts as the primary driver of photodamage and photosynthetic tox

Ornamental coral pests and parasites: a biosecurity alert for aquarium trade.

Aquarium corals have emerged as a relevant sector not only from an economic perspective but also as a tool for ex situ conservation. However, coral pests and parasites, such as flatworms Prosthiostomum acroporae, nudibranchs Phestilla spp., parasitic copepods Tegastes acroporanus, epizoic acoelomorphs Waminoa spp., and histophagous ciliates Philaster spp., pose significant biological and economic risks in captive systems. This review synthesizes current knowledge on major pest groups affecting ornamental corals, emphasizing their life cycles, host specificity, and control strategies. Chemical

Initial coral assemblage drives benthic community response to different disturbance type events.

An increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme environmental conditions due to anthropogenic climate change impacts coral reefs through myriad stressors, from elevated sea-surface temperatures to increased storm activity. A reef's response to these disturbances can be influenced by factors including taxonomic composition, life history strategies, or spatial patterning of the reef community members. We explored the disturbance-specific responses of coral reefs by following changes in benthic cover of major functional groups, community assemblage, and the response of common coral taxa at

Diffuse pacemaker mechanism with distinctive organization drives pulsation in the octocoral Xenia umbellata.

The unique, hypnotic pulsation behavior of certain soft corals of the Xeniidae family, the result of rhythmic opening and closing of their tentacles, has fascinated scientists since the 18th century. Repetitive motion is regulated by autonomous neural circuits known as pacemakers or central pattern generators. However, little is known about such circuits in nonbilaterian organisms like corals. In this report, Xenia umbellata, a fast-growing octocoral, served as a model organism to study the muscular and neural mechanisms of pulsation. Leveraging this coral's rapid regeneration ability, we test

Temporal variations of biofouling assemblages of a coral reef ecosystem during a monsoon period.

Coral reefs are highly biodiverse ecosystems, enriched by a range of biofouling species. Temporal variations in biofouling can affect ecosystem stability, but these diverse coral-associated communities remain underexplored in some regions. In the present study, biofouling assemblages of coral reefs in the Chabahar Bay were investigated during a summer monsoon at three deployment periods. In total, 26 taxa were identified with barnacles and polychaetes being the dominant taxa during the whole study. The coverage percentage was driven mostly by the encrusting taxa such as bryozoans and algae whi

Molecular phylogenetic relationships based on mitochondrial genomes of novel deep-sea corals (Octocorallia: Alcyonacea): Insights into slow evolution and adaptation to extreme deep-sea environments.

A total of 10 specimens of Alcyonacea corals were collected at depths ranging from 905 m to 1 633 m by the manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi during two cruises in the South China Sea (SCS). Based on mitochondrial genomic characteristics, morphological examination, and sclerite scanning electron microscopy, the samples were categorized into four suborders (Calcaxonia, Holaxonia, Scleraxonia, and Stolonifera), and identified as 9 possible new cold-water coral species. Assessments of GC-skew dissimilarity, phylogenetic distance, and average nucleotide identity (ANI) revealed a slow evolutionary

Assessment of storm impact on coral reef structural complexity.

Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and magnitude. Consequently, it is important to understand their effects and remediation. Resilience reflects the ability of an ecosystem to absorb change, which is important for understanding ecological dynamics and trajectories. To describe the impact of a powerful storm on coral reef structural complexity, we used novel computational tools and detailed 3D reconstructions captured at three time points over three years. Our data-set Reefs4D of 21 co-registered image-based models enabled us to calculate the differences at seven sites over time

Environmental memory gained from exposure to extreme pCO2 variability promotes coral cellular acid-base homeostasis.

Ocean acidification is a growing threat to coral growth and the accretion of coral reef ecosystems. Corals inhabiting environments that already endure extreme diel pCO2 fluctuations, however, may represent acidification-resilient populations capable of persisting on future reefs. Here, we examined the impact of pCO2 variability on the reef-building coral Pocillopora damicornis originating from reefs with contrasting environmental histories (variable reef flat versus stable reef slope) following reciprocal exposure to stable (218 ± 9) or variable (911 ± 31) diel pCO2 amplitude (μtam) in aquaria

Halo- and Thiocarbazomycins from Coral- and Coral Reef Sands-Derived Actinomycetes.

Four actinomycete strains isolated from the coral Acropora austera and coral sand samples from the South China Sea, were found to produce a series of halogenated compounds baring similar ultraviolet absorption based on the analysis of HPLC and LC-MS. The production titers of halogenated compounds from Streptomyces diacarni SCSIO 64983 exceeded those of other similar strains leading us to focus on SCSIO 64983. Four new thiocarbazomycins A-B (1-2), chlocarbazomycin E (3), and brocarbazomycin A (4), together with three known chlocarbazomycins A-C (5-7) containing a carbazole core were identified,

Co-occurrence patterns between false coral snake Atractus latifrons (Günther, 1868) (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) and venomous coral snakes from the Amazon.

Batesian mimicry may result in remarkable cases of phenotypic convergence that represent classic examples of evolution through natural selection. The existence of mimicry systems among coral snakes, however, remains controversial because of contradictions between the predictions of mimetic theory and the empirical patterns of co-occurrence and species abundance. Here, we analyze the geographic distribution of coral snake species of the genus Micrurus and populations of the false coral snake Atractus latifrons in Amazonia, and perform ecological niche modeling (ENM) analyzes to generate potenti

Disease resistance in coral is mediated by distinct adaptive and plastic gene expression profiles.

Infectious diseases are an increasing threat to coral reefs, resulting in altered community structure and hindering the functional contributions of disease-susceptible species. We exposed seven reef-building coral species from the Caribbean to white plague disease and determined processes involved in (i) lesion progression, (ii) within-species gene expression plasticity, and (iii) expression-level adaptation among species that lead to differences in disease risk. Gene expression networks enriched in immune genes and cytoskeletal arrangement processes were correlated to lesion progression rates

Allelopathic interactions between the brown algal genus Lobophora (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) and scleractinian corals.

Allelopathy has been recently suggested as a mechanism by which macroalgae may outcompete corals in damaged reefs. Members of the brown algal genus Lobophora are commonly observed in close contact with scleractinian corals and have been considered responsible for negative effects of macroalgae to scleractinian corals. Recent field assays have suggested the potential role of chemical mediators in this interaction. We performed in situ bioassays testing the allelopathy of crude extracts and isolated compounds of several Lobophora species, naturally associated or not with corals, against four cor

Self-recognition in corals facilitates deep-sea habitat engineering.

The ability of coral reefs to engineer complex three-dimensional habitats is central to their success and the rich biodiversity they support. In tropical reefs, encrusting coralline algae bind together substrates and dead coral framework to make continuous reef structures, but beyond the photic zone, the cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa also forms large biogenic reefs, facilitated by skeletal fusion. Skeletal fusion in tropical corals can occur in closely related or juvenile individuals as a result of non-aggressive skeletal overgrowth or allogeneic tissue fusion, but contact reactions in man

Skeletal structure and progression of growth anomalies in Porites australiensis in Okinawa, Japan.

Growth anomalies (GAs), one of the diseases recently reported for scleractinian corals, are characterized by an abnormal skeletal structure and reduced zooxanthella density. The pathological characteristics of GAs were studied in colonies of Porites australiensis on a reef in Kayo, Okinawa, Japan. Corallites in the GA region lost the skeletal architecture characteristic of P. australiensis, and polyp density had decreased in the GAs due to enlargement of both calices and the coenosteum. The gross productivity of isolated GA samples was lower than in healthy samples and decreased to almost 0 wi

Changes in Caribbean coral disease prevalence after the 2005 bleaching event.

Bleaching events and disease epizootics have increased during the past decades, suggesting a positive link between these 2 causes in producing coral mortality. However, studies to test this hypothesis, integrating a broad range of hierarchical spatial scales from habitats to distant localities, have not been conducted in the Caribbean. In this study, we examined links between bleaching intensity and disease prevalence collected from 6 countries, 2 reef sites for each country, and 3 habitats within each reef site (N = 6 x 2 x 3 = 36 site-habitat combinations) during the peak of bleaching in 200

White plague disease outbreak in a coral reef at Los Roques National Park, Venezuela.

Coral diseases have been reported as a major problem affecting Caribbean coral reefs. During August 2000, a coral mortality event of White Plague Disease-II (WPD-II) was observed at Madrizqui Reef in Los Roques National Park, Venezuela. This disease was identified as the major cause of coral mortality, affecting 24% of all colonies surveyed (n = 1 439). Other diseases such as Black Band Disease (BBD), Yellow Blotch Disease (YBD), Dark Spots Disease (DSD) and White Band Disease (WBD) were also recorded, but showed a lower incidence (0.14-0.97%). Two depth intervals, D1 (5.5-6.5 m) and D2 (9-9.5
