Geogenic and anthropogenic metal enrichment in aquatic sedimentary environments - What are they and can they be differentiated.

Erosion of metal-rich country rock in a catchment may strongly influence the distribution of metals in sediments of a receiving basin. These geogenic deposits often obscure anthropogenic enrichment trends in aquatic environments confounding interpretation and resulting in erroneous decisions for management. High geogenic Cu concentrations up to 89 μg/g in total sediment in Burrill Lake estuary in New South Wales (Australia) hindered attempts to establish anthropogenic Cu enrichment trends using traditional local, regional and global background values and prevented an accurate assessment of imp

The Distribution of Xenobiotics of Terrigenous Origin in the Nearshore Waters of a Caribbean Island.

Anthropogenic pollutants known as xenobiotics, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, or human metabolites, primarily originate on land and accumulate near populated coasts, where rainfall further increases their transport and harmful impacts on marine ecosystems. However, empirical evidence for such dynamics remains limited. Here, we investigate spatial and seasonal patterns of terrigenous xenobiotics along the land-sea continuum of Curaçao. Using solid-phase extraction and untargeted LC-HR-MS/MS metabolomics, we detected approximately 30,000 molecular features, including 1,394 xenobiotics that

Factors determining nutrient distribution in sediments and porewater in a semi-confined coastal environment subject to anthropogenic pressure.

Increasing inputs of nutrients and organic matter from urban areas accumulate in coastal sediments, which act as a storage compartment that can trigger eutrophication events, and promote organism mortality. The aim of this research was to evaluate the factors that determine the distribution of nutrients in sediments and porewater from a coastal environment. Jurujuba cove receives nutrients and organic matter inputs from diffuse sources (mainly domestic sewage) and from intensive mussel farming. Fifteen sediment samples were collected. pH and Eh were measured in situ. Sediments were centrifuged

Delayed Anthropocene in the deep-sea biosphere: a last paradise soon lost?

The deep sea remains a last paradise and the place of minimal human impacts compared with other ecosystems. However, this pristine status is rapidly changing, and deep-sea human impacts have seldom been discussed in a broad context that draws comparisons with those in other ecosystems. Here, we recap the history of human-induced ecological degradation in deep-sea, shallow-marine and terrestrial ecosystems to place the deep-sea situation in a broad context. Anthropogenic terrestrial ecosystem degradation started tens of thousands of years ago. Shallow-marine ecosystem change followed that of te

Sedimentary Ancient DNA Tracks Multi-Kingdom Ecosystem Reorganizations Following Sequential Human Land Use at Crawford Lake.

Crawford Lake has an exceptional stratigraphic record that began recording biannual (varved) sedimentation in the lake basin ~750 years ago, preserving evidence of shifting cultural zones and agricultural practices, from Late Woodland Period Indigenous agriculturalists to the impacts of industrialization during the late 19th century. It was selected as the candidate site for the proposed 'Anthropocene' epoch in 2023-a proposal ultimately rejected in 2024-but the lake's significance extends beyond a formal stratigraphic boundary. Its sediments preserve a long record of human-ecosystem entanglem

Are caiman nests microhabitats? Assessing their ecological role across different levels of anthropogenic disturbance.

Wild vertebrates face increasing threats from human activities, particularly land-use changes, which disrupt ecological interactions and ecosystem structure. Animal-built structures, such as nests, can provide resources for diverse species, especially under conditions of environmental stress. Here, we evaluate whether broad-snouted caiman nests function as microhabitats for other vertebrates across varying levels of anthropogenic disturbance in Santa Fe, Argentina. Over four nesting seasons we monitored 64 nests in forests, savannahs and floating vegetation using camera traps, examining verteb

Molecular and trace metal signatures of pristine and anthropogenically altered mangrove sediments.

Mangroves contribute to long-term carbon sequestration and are considered as blue carbon ecosystems; however, they are facing increasing anthropogenic pressures, with trace metals emerging as an environmental concern. Despite their toxicological impacts, the mechanisms governing trace metal retention in mangrove sediments require further investigation, particularly their association with natural organic compounds. Here, we employed Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) to analyze a wide range of lipids in mangrove sediments from two pristine sites and one anth

Anthropogenic impacts on antibiotic resistance genes and their hosts from pristine to urban river using metagenomic and binning approaches.

Driven by anthropogenic pressure, Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) could transfer from the environmental resistome into human commensals or even pathogens. The transport of ARGs through aquatic ecosystems is crucial and has attracted attention. Here, we employed metagenomic and binning to compare ARGs profiles, their co-occurrence with metal resistance genes (MRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and their hosts between pristine and anthropogenic influenced rivers and explore the ecological mechanisms underlying the dissemination of ARGs induced by anthropogenic activities. The significa

Springs as sentinels: hydrogeological mediation and anthropogenic forcing of nutrient dynamics in tropical aquifers.

Springs, as critical groundwater discharge points, are highly sensitive to coupled hydrogeological and anthropogenic perturbations in rapidly transforming tropical landscapes. This six-year study (2018-2023) investigates nutrient dynamics in springs across distinct hydrogeological settings of the Western Ghats, India. Significant spatial variability in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), dissolved silica (DSi), and physicochemical parameters (EC, TDS, DO) were observed (one-way ANOVA, p < 0.05), reflecting heterogeneous recharge pathways and land-use influ

[Soil Microbial Nutrient Limitation Characteristics During Anthropogenic Transition from Desert Steppe to Shrubland].

The practice of planting xerophytic shrubs for vegetation restoration in arid and semi-arid grasslands has become a common model. In fact, it is accelerating the process of regional grassland shrub encroachment. At present, studies on the ecological consequences of anthropogenic shrub encroachment on grassland ecosystems have been gradually carried out. However, the changes in soil microbial nutrient utilization and limitation during the anthropogenic transition from desert grasslands to shrublands have not been thoroughly explored. Therefore, a representative grassland-shrubland mosaic formed

Persistent elevated levels of dissolved lead in the Indian Ocean post-leaded gasoline ban: The impact of anthropogenic activities, sediment desorption, and dust storms.

This study examines the distribution of dissolved lead (dPb) in the Indian Ocean, based on seawater samples collected during winter monsoon GI10 (2020) and spring inter-monsoon GI09 (2021) cruises. A total of 510 samples were analyzed for dPb concentrations using HR-ICP-MS coupled with seaFAST system. The study emphasizes the spatial distribution of dPb in the Indian Ocean, identifying major sources and key influencing factors. Concentrations of dPb in the mixed layer ranged from 23 to 114 pM, with elevated values in the northern Indian Ocean. A pronounced latitudinal gradient was observed as

Anthropogenic influences on Rhodnius ecuadoriensis populations and nesting behaviors in sylvatic areas of southern ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a major public health concern. While Rhodnius ecuadoriensis, a key vector, is traditionally sylvatic, environmental disturbances have driven its adaptation to human-influenced habitats. This study explores a novel factor: how anthropogenic waste affects vector ecology by altering nest compositions. Unlike prior research, this study examines whether human-derived materials in nests influence triatomine colonization. Given rising pollution, particularly post-COVID-19, understanding its role in disease transmission is e

Urban Environments Promote Adaptation to Multiple Stressors.

Anthropogenic activities have drastically changed environmental conditions worldwide, negatively impacting biodiversity and ecosystem services. At the same time, the majority of the human population lives in urban areas that are greatly altered from natural habitats. Nevertheless, many species thrive in these urban environments. To improve our knowledge of evolution and adaptation in these anthropogenically impacted habitats, we conducted the widest series of stress experiments to date with three marine taxa: one mussel and two gammarid species. We compared intraspecific populations from prote

Quantifying anthropogenic impacts on CO₂ and CH₄ emissions: statistical insights and hotspot detection in East Africa.

East Africa (EA) faces significant challenges related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄), largely driven by biomass burning (BB) from agricultural fires and wildfires. Despite their importance, the spatiotemporal variability of these emissions remains poorly understood. This study quantifies CO₂ and CH₄ emissions across EA (2001-2022), revealing significant CO₂ emission peaks in 2005 (32.5 million tonnes), 2016 (29.8 million tonnes), and 2020 (31.2 million tonnes), alongside an 18% increase in CH₄ emissions between 2015 and 2020. BB accounted

Machine learning unveils the impact of anthropogenic emission changes on urban PM2.5 and O3: A case study in Wuhu.

PM2.5 and O3 are two major issues hindering air quality improvement in China. However, the response of these two pollutants to anthropogenic emission variations in the real atmosphere was not yet well understood. Here, we selected the short-term epidemic lockdown in Wuhu in 2022 as a case study and evaluated the impacts of meteorology and anthropogenic emission on PM2.5 and O3 using field observations combined with machine learning algorithms. The results showed that NO2 observed during the lockdown was 32.2 ± 8.1 µg/m3, 10.1 % lower than before the lockdown, and that NO2 continued to decrease

Effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields on flora and fauna, part 1. Rising ambient EMF levels in the environment.

Ambient levels of electromagnetic fields (EMF) have risen sharply in the last 80 years, creating a novel energetic exposure that previously did not exist. Most recent decades have seen exponential increases in nearly all environments, including rural/remote areas and lower atmospheric regions. Because of unique physiologies, some species of flora and fauna are sensitive to exogenous EMF in ways that may surpass human reactivity. There is limited, but comprehensive, baseline data in the U.S. from the 1980s against which to compare significant new surveys from different countries. This now provi

Pollution and anthropogenic stressors are associated with cetacean vulnerability in coastal waters: Fine-scale diagnostics from eDNA and multispecies modeling.

The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) and the Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activity, however the relative influence of multiple stressors in shaping their population dynamics remains unclear. Effective implementation of conservation strategies for S. chinensis and N. phocaenoides requires an understanding of the key factors affecting specific populations, including co-occurring influences of pollution, boating activity and potential prey availability, which are currently lacking. Here, we integrated multi-sp

Mechanical traumatic injuries as a cause of death in free-ranging neotropical non-human primates living in anthropogenic matrices.

Traumatic injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in free-ranging non-human primates (NHPs), often associated with anthropogenic pressures such as habitat loss, urbanization, and interactions with domestic animals. This study characterized some epidemiological, spatial, and pathological patterns of mechanical traumatic injuries in free-ranging non-human primates from anthropogenically altered areas of the Federal District. Of 696 necropsies performed, 215 cases (30.9%) involved mechanical trauma. Black-tufted marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) were the most affected species (90.2

The emergence of human influence on the ozone layer by the 1960s.

The Antarctic ozone hole was first reported in 1985, and small ozone losses at the global scale were also observed in the late 1980s. The combination of field and laboratory measurements, together with modeling, quickly established anthropogenic chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as the cause of both the Antarctic and global ozone depletion. However, when, where, and why the earliest ozone depletion could have been detected has not been determined. Here, we conduct a thought experiment to investigate when human-induced ozone depletion could have first been detectable, assuming the availability of accu

Paleogenomic sex inference of mammoth remains sheds light on the anthropogenic nature of bone accumulations.

Whether large accumulations of woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) bones reflect natural mortality or deliberate human resource exploitation has long been debated, with major implications for understanding Late Pleistocene human-megafaunal interactions.1,2,3,4,5 Here, we use ancient DNA to investigate site-formation hypotheses by comparing genetic sex ratios from mammoth remains recovered in putative anthropogenic bone accumulations and from geographically dispersed, non-anthropogenic contexts. We studied genome-wide data from 521 woolly mammoths-including 100 mammoths from bone accumulatio
