INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common infection worldwide. The increase in multidrug resistance together with the paucity of new antibiotics highlights the need for alternative antimicrobials for management of UTI. Among which are older antimicrobials that had been used in the past and now were stopped.

Current NHS policy is to reduce the number of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). To achieve this, guidance suggests reducing the use of catheterisation as much as possible. INTRODUCTION: Bacterial prostatitis, acute or chronic, is one of the most prevalent urogenital infections in men. Its diagnosis requires the application of a careful methodology. Gram-negative bacilli are the most frequent causative agents, and in recent years, an increase in the frequency of multiresistant bacteria has been detected. The choice of the optimal antimicrobial treatment requires the selection of drugs with proven in vitro activity associated with good penetration into the prostatic tissue, especially in chronic forms of infection.

OBJECTIVES: Guidelines do not distinguish between 50 mg or 100 mg nitrofurantoin as daily prophylaxis for recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), although 50 mg might have a better safety profile. Our objective was to compare the effectiveness and safety of both regimens.
METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from 84 Dutch GP practices between 2013 and 2020. Nitrofurantoin prescriptions of 100 mg and 50 mg every 24 hours in women were included. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to calculate hazard ratios on first episode of UTI, pyelonephritis and (adverse) events.
