BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is a common malignancy of bone that usually occurs in individuals in the age range of 0-24 years. Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare tumor presentation which originates in non-bony tissues. Extraskeletal osteosarcoma comprises 2-5% of all osteosarcomas and less than 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. As compared to bone-derived osteosarcoma, extraskeletal osteosarcoma occurs in older age groups. Extraskeletal osteosarcoma has a poorer prognosis than bone osteosarcoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the anal region.

Giant condyloma acuminatum (GCA) is a rare cauliflower-like lesion, also known as Buschke-L ewenstein tumor (BLT). Although characterized by benign histological features, the local behavior of GCA is extremely aggressive, showing progressive infiltration of the surrounding structures leading to tissue destruction by compression. As the correlation between HPV and GCA development grew stronger, the majority of the Authors came to the conclusion that HPV can not only cause CA but, associated with particular risk factors, it can lead to much more serious conditions such as BLT. Since the treatmen

OBJECTIVE: To compare anal cytology prepared via conventional methods and the ThinPrep processor.
STUDY DESIGN: Cells from the anal canal were collected using a moistened swab. One hundred thirty-six samples were collected from 133 gay or bisexual men; 102 were human immunodeficiency virus seropositive. A conventional smear was prepared and fixed in 95% ethanol. The residual cells on the swab were collected for thin-layer preparation using the Cytyc processor.
RESULTS: The diagnoses made from the conventional smears and thin layers agreed in 113 of 136 cases. An additional 19 cases were clas

The neonatal anus is an unusual anatomic site for granuloma pyogenicum (GP). Several synonisms exist for GP (at least 16). It is a tumor of soft tissues (benign vascular tumor). Both a maternal variant (the epulis) and a hamartomatous perinatal one are known. The terms teleangiectasic granuloma and pyogenic or infected granuloma have been used to describe respectively the early and late stages of the lesion. In the anal site it appears as a sessile or peduncolated, red-wine, soft little tumor of the size of a millet or barley grain. Histologically it is a capillary haemangioma with inflammator

A variety of conditions can affect the perianal tissues. Evaluation must include a thorough history, which should emphasize hygienic habits, use of topical and oral medications, and a review of systems with particular attention to gastrointestinal symptoms. Examination of other areas of the skin may provide clues to the correct diagnosis. Examination of scrapings for yeast, more rarely dermatophytes, and Tzanck preparations from the base of blisters or erosive lesions are useful office diagnostic techniques. In some conditions biopsy of the involved area can be diagnostic (e.g., Paget's diseas

Historically, squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal was treated with abdominoperineal resection. Nigro discovered that radiation therapy combined with 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin resulted in high rates of local control and colostomy-free and overall survival without surgical intervention. Recent advances include the integration of PET into staging, radiation treatment planning, disease monitoring, and the use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy. For rectal cancer, clinical trials have established the role for neoadjuvant therapy for T3-4 and/or node-positive tumor presentations. Chem

Anal intraepithelial neoplasms (AIN) are precursors to anal cancer. To date, there is not a significant body of literature to support screening, monitoring, and treatment of these precursor lesions, particularly in high risk populations. This review will detail the current monitoring and indications for treatment of such lesions, with the goal of preventing progression to invasive cancer.

For decades, chemoradiotherapy for early-stage disease and systemic chemotherapy for advanced disease have represented the mainstay of treatment for anal cancer. Over the last few years, however, the advent of immunotherapy has opened interesting therapeutic perspectives, with the establishment of new standards of care, and the development of clinical trials that may further shape the treatment algorithm for this tumour. In this review article, we discuss the rationale behind the use of immunotherapy for anal cancer and provide an overview of the available clinical data and ongoing efforts to
