As experience with laparoscopy increases, new applications in general surgery are being identified. Treatment of acute appendicitis through the laparoscope has been proposed. We present our initial experience with this new technique. Over a 12-month period, laparoscopic appendectomy was attempted in 29 patients. There were no intraoperative complications. Two cases required conversion to the open technique owing to gangrene at the appendiceal base. The average operating time was 64 minutes. Two of nine patients with perforated appendicitis developed a pelvic abscess, and one patient developed

The author suggests a modification of the invagination method of appendectomy without ligation of the stump. This method is the most physiologic one; it minimizes the inflammatory process and prevents an undue formation of adhesions. Experimental grounds for the method are described. 204 patients were operated upon. This method has shown better long-term results as compared to typical appendectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Appendectomy is the standard treatment for appendicitis, with the laparoscopic technique offering benefits like lower infection rates and quicker recovery. However, residents often have their first practical experience with the procedure on real patients, increasing surgical risks. In this context, medical simulation emerges as a crucial methodology, allowing professionals to experience a variety of scenarios while preventing harm to patients. The objective of this study is to describe the production of an "ex-vivo" simulation model for laparoscopic appendectomy.

More than 10,000 appendectomies are performed every year in Switzerland. The aim of this study was to investigate the treatment strategy for appendicitis among Swiss surgeons with particular interest in laparoscopic technique, method of appendiceal stump closure, and abdominal lavage. We performed an anonymous survey among 540 members of the Swiss Surgical Society. Technical details and differences between the surgical procedures in adults and children as well as in complicated and non-complicated appendicitis were investigated. The overall response rate was 45% (n = 243). 78% of the surgeons

Background: The role of Enterobius vermicularis infestation in the context of appendicitis is largely overlooked, but Enterobius vermicularis is considered an unexpected and significant appendicectomy finding. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of Enterobius vermicularis findings in appendectomies and to evaluate the clinical and histopathologic features of patients with Enterobius vermicularis-associated acute appendicitis and those with appendiceal Enterobius vermicularis infestation. Methods: The medical records of all children who underwent an appendectomy in two large

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Appendectomy may modulate the risk of inflammatory bowel disease through an effect on the gut microbiota. This study investigated the associations between appendectomy and incidence of Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC), with an emphasis on the influence of age and time post appendectomy.
METHODS: This cohort study included 400 520 subjects born in Québec in 1970-1974 and followed until 2014. Administrative health data were used to ascertain appendectomy and cases of CD and UC. Cox proportional hazards models with time-dependent variables (appendectomy a

OBJECTIVES: For a suspected diagnosis of acute appendicitis, appendectomy is one of the most common emergency abdominal operations performed. However, the need for routine histopathological examination (HPE) of all appendectomy specimens has recently been questioned. The aim of this study was to assess whether a routine HPE of appendectomy specimens is needed and whether routine HPE has an impact on further management of patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2009 to June 2017, all histopathology reports of 4012 consecutive appendectomy specimens for a clinical suspicion of acute append

Background: Considered vestigial from the classic point of view, the vermiform appendix has long been the subject of intensive studies. The recent understanding of appendix function in the context of unique architecture and bacterial complexity and density allows considering it as a safehouse for intestinal biodiversity. Methods: This review analyzes and assesses the current state of scientific knowledge regarding the role of the vermiform appendix in normal gut microbiota maintenance as a crucial factor of host homeostasis. It also highlights the difference in microbial composition between th

Acute appendicitis is common in patients with right lower quadrant pain and affects all gender and age groups. Because clinical diagnosis of patients with right lower quadrant pain remains a challenge to emergency physicians and surgeons, imaging is of major importance. Ultrasound has well-established direct and indirect signs for diagnosing acute appendicitis and revealing the presence of an appendicolith. Appendectomy, which can be either open or laparoscopic, constitutes the basic treatment. However, the need for an appendectomy is debatable, particularly in high-risk patients. We report th

Mucocele of the appendix is an aseptic dilatation secondary to obstruction. The preoperative clinical diagnosis of appendiceal mucoceles can therefore be difficult because of this lack of clinical symptomotology. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice in benign mucocele. We report a case presenting to the surgeons where initial clinical findings and investigations suggested a cyst in the right adnexa. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed mucocele of the appendix and laparoscopic appendicectomy was done.

Minimally invasive surgery is being widely accepted in various fields of surgery. Although several appendectomy techniques have been reported but, there is no standardization. We report here the experiences of transumbilical endoscopic appendectomy in humans. Between July 2008 and September 2010, ten patients with appendicitis successfully underwent transumbilical endoscopic appendectomies. There were 7 cases of suppurative, 2 cases of gangrenous and 1 case of perforated in operative findings. The ages of the patients were 13-56 years (mean age, 32.7 ± 15.4 years). Under general anesthesia, a

BACKGROUND: The urachal cyst is a rare pathology in the adult patient and in general is asymptomatic. The goal of this presentation is to learn of the errors.
CLINICAL CASE: A 22 year old female with clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis was taken to surgical management. Laparoscopy confirmed the diagnosis. Laparoscopic appendectomy was performed uneventfully. Four weeks in the postoperative period the patient developed reddening and softening in the left surgical wound which was a trocar incision. The initial diagnosis was a granuloma which was removed surgically twice. A fistulogram and
