Eight (8) cases of solitary choroidal hemangioma associated with macular serous retinal detachment were treated with Argon green laser photocoagulation. The neoplasms were essentially eliminated and the retinas reattached. The visual acuity was improved unless the hemangioma involved the foveal region. No relapse occurred during a follow-up of 6 to 32 months. The laser parameters adopted were: spot size 300-400 microns, exposure 0.2-1.0 sec, and output 0.3-0.5 W.

A retrospective review of all stapedectomies performed at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary over a 13 month period was undertaken to compare the results of argon laser stapedectomy to conventional footplate fenestration techniques. To investigate whether ocular hypotony formation with 360 degrees endocyclophotocoagulation is possible. Twelve male New Zealand White rabbits were used. Entire ciliary body epithelium was destructed with green laser photocoagulation after pars plana lensectomy and anterior vitrectomy in six rabbits. PURPOSE: To report the therapy of benign eyelid tumors with an argon laser as an alternative to surgery.
METHODS: Forty-one patients with 47 benign tumors of the eyelid were included in this study. In all patients, the eyelid tumor was eliminated by argon laser. The results of argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) in a series of 254 eyes are presented with a follow-up of over five years. ALT was effective in lowering the IOP in most cases of primary open angle glaucoma (56.3%). Several complications were observed. These included anterior uveitis, hemorrhage, formation of peripheral anterior synechiae, elevation of IOP. The most serious complication observed was presumed sympathetic ophthalmia in an aphakic eye with uveitic glaucoma 12 months after ALT.

This case demonstrates the use of the argon laser for ossicular mobilization. A preoperative audiologic evaluation revealed a severe conductive hearing loss, with a maximum air-bone gap. Since normal drilling procedures would result in a sensorineural hearing loss, the argon laser was chosen to remove a bony spur connecting the malleus to the posterior canal wall. When using the argon laser, no disarticulation of the incus and stapes is required. Postoperative audiologic evaluation revealed normal hearing sensitivity bilaterally.

A patient suffering from skin leishmaniasis is described. Clinical diagnosis was confirmed by histologic findings and isolation of Leishmania tropica. Since antibiotic therapy was ineffective, the patient was exposed to argon laser for the coagulation of nodular elements. Six sessions of laser therapy under local anesthesia with intervals of 4-5 days were carried out, this resulting in complete clinical cure.

Complications attributable to large conjunctival blebs after glaucoma filtering surgery range from annoying foreign-body sensation to devastating endophthalmitis. One hundred and one female patients with vulvar condylomata acuminata were treated with the argon laser. Most were managed under regional or general anesthesia because of the large size and extent of the warts. Ten patients were lost to follow-up after the first session. Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) was used to treat 237 eyes of 156 presurgical patients with various open-angle glaucomas. Patients with primary open-angle glaucoma formed the largest group; intraocular pressure (IOP) control judged clinically to be adequate was achieved in 77.3% of eyes. Since January 1980, 477 patients were treated with an argon laser, 337 afflicted with vascular lesions and 140 with nonvascular lesions. Laser therapy of portwine stains gave good results in 70% of the adult patients, but it was disappointing in patients younger than 18 years of age. The argon laser beams' effect on angle structures was studied in 20 uncontrolled glaucomatous eyes. Nineteen eyes became hypotensive quickly, but in 15, the elevated tension returned during the 20 to 40 day follow-up period.
