Reactive arthritis induced by Strongyloides stercoralis.

Reactive arthritis induced by Strongyloides is exceedingly rare. A case in a 53-year-old man from the Guadeloupe (French Antilles) is reported. The outcome was rapidly favorable under thiabendazole therapy. The cycle of Strongyloides is reviewed, and the contribution of parasites to reactive arthritis in patients with genetic risk factors is discussed. Establishing the correct diagnosis is sometimes difficult but is essential in order to avoid inappropriate administration of corticosteroids that can lead to fatal, multivisceral dissemination of the parasite, particularly in patients with stron

Bowel infection predisposing to reactive arthritis.

Postenteric reactive arthritis is one of several syndromes in which arthritis appears to be secondary to gastrointestinal tract pathology. A wide range of microbes may trigger this type of arthritis. On the other hand, there are differences between strains in their arthritogenic potential. Two possible mechanisms, not mutually exclusive, can be forwarded to explain these findings: first, particular characteristics of the infective organisms are necessary to initiate events leading to reactive arthritis and, second, particular anatomical locations and a certain degree of mucosal involvement are

Reactive arthritis induced by parasitic infestation.

Arthritis developed in two patients during the course of parasite infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis and Taenia saginata, respectively. The joint involvement was polyarticular and symmetrical but seronegative and nonerosive radiologically. We found evidence of abnormal humoral immunity to the parasites, immune complexes in serum and synovial fluid, and immunoglobulin deposits in the synovia. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents proved ineffective but specific antiparasitic treatment resulted in resolution of the symptoms and immunologic abnormalities. Our findings provide further docu

Reactive arthritis after Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.

Reactive arthritis of 1 or more peripheral joints developed after an enteric infection with Campylobacter jejuni in 6 adult patients. Other reactive signs, such as conjunctivitis, aphthous stomatitis, stranguria and sterile leukocyturia occurred in 4 patients. Five of the 6 patients possessed the HLA-B27 antigen. The history indicated previous joint disease in 4 of the 6 patients. The short-term follow-up showed a benign course of the arthritis. When a reactive arthritis syndrome is clinically suspected, investigations should include a search for Campylobacter jejuni infection by culture of th

Reactive arthritis after COVID-19 infection.

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is typically preceded by sexually transmitted disease or gastrointestinal infection. An association has also been reported with bacterial and viral respiratory infections. Herein, we report the first case of ReA after the he severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. This male patient is in his 50s who was admitted with COVID-19 pneumonia. On the second day of admission, SARS-CoV-2 PCR was positive from nasopharyngeal swab specimen. Despite starting standard dose of favipiravir, his respiratory condition deteriorated during hospitalisation.

[Reactive arthritis: inflammation or true infection?].

Reactive arthritis has been classically defined as an aseptic arthritis induced by a bacterial infection in another organ. If the classical form of reactive arthritis is in fact a spondyloarthritis triggered by a urogenital or intestinal bacterial infection, it is not necessarily sterile, and in some cases it may be worthwhile to treat a chronic infection with long-term antibiotherapy. In a broader definition, the concept of reactive arthritis is widened to other post-infectious rheumatism, such as post-streptococcal arthritis or post-viral arthritis.

[Urogenic reactive arthritis morbidity in Kazakhstan].

Statistical data on osteo-muscular morbidity in Kazakhstan are presented. Their comparative analysis revealed a 5% rise in general morbidity and a 1% rise in the frequency of urogenic Chlamydial infection. The frequency of inflammatory joint diseases including urogenic reactive arthritis among the patients of a military hospital amounted to 51%.

Polyarthritic, symmetric arthropathy in reactive arthritis.

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is an immune mediated disease, clinically associated with oligoarthritis of the lower limbs and sometimes with urethritis and conjunctivitis. In our case, a 24-year-old male presented with severe mutilating arthritis involving both upper and lower extremities in contrast to conventional Reiter's syndrome which presents with asymmetric oligoarthritis. He had multiple well-defined, irregular, erythematous, hyperkeratotic, scaly and itchy plaques, not easily distinguishable from pustular psoriasis. The patient also gave history of circinate balanitis and urethritis. He wa

Macular infarction associated with reactive arthritis.

A 53-year-old woman visited the Department of Rheumatology with a chief complaint of a 3-day history of fever and chills and also presented with pain occurring in both knees at the time of outpatient visit. Based on rheumatologic and hematological lab studies, ultrasonography, and a needle aspiration biopsy of the articular cavity, the patient was diagnosed with reactive arthritis. On hospitalization day 3, consultation with the Department of Ophthalmology was requested regarding decreased visual acuity lasting for 3 days. Upon ophthalmologic examination, the corrected visual acuity was 0.1 in

Reactive arthritis associated with hidradenitis suppurativa.

This is a case report of a man with chronic hidradenitis suppurativa who developed reactive arthritis. He presented with swelling and pain in his larger joints, along with conjunctivitis involving his right eye. These symptoms coincided with a flare of the hidradenitis suppurativa. His clinical picture and laboratory findings were consistent with a diagnosis of reactive arthritis. He was initially treated with prednisone, and later with methotrexate, with improvement in his symptoms. This case report is a discussion of a rare cause of reactive arthritis. A review of the literature regarding th

Potential triggering infections of reactive arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate possible triggering infections causing reactive arthritis (ReA) of urogenital origin. METHODS: One hundred and twenty ReA patients, 85 control group patients with other arthritides (61 with rheumatoid arthritis, 13 with osteoarthritis, and 11 with microcrystal arthritis), and 52 healthy persons were tested for urogenital tract inflammation and several infectious agents. Ligase chain reaction was used for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT). Genital mycoplasmas Ureaplasma urealyticum (Uu) and Mycoplasma hominis (Mh) were tested using the
