Ascaris and ascariasis.

Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum are widespread parasitic nematodes of humans and pigs respectively. Recent prevalence data suggests that approximately 1.2 billion people are infected. Adult worms exhibit an overdispersed frequency distribution in their hosts and individuals harbouring heavy burdens display associated morbidity. In this review, we describe the parasite, its distribution and measures undertaken to control infection.

Ascariasis and handwashing.

This review summarises evidence of the effectiveness of handwashing and the use of soap as a public health intervention against Ascaris infection, in terms of both prevalence and intensity. Literature in five major languages was searched and data were retrieved from 15 papers. The evidence of the effect of handwashing in general upon both prevalence and intensity of Ascaris infection is inconclusive. However, the use of soap in handwashing is protective against Ascaris infection with respect to prevalence. There is no direct evidence that it reduces the intensity of infection.

Pharmacotherapy of ascariasis.

Ascaris lumbricoides, the most frequent human intestinal nematode, is the causative agent of ascariasis, with an estimated worldwide prevalence of over one billion people, especially in moist tropical and subtropical regions, but also in cooler climates. Although characterised with low morbidity and mortality rates, the global prevalence of ascariasis still results in approximately 20,000 deaths annually, primarily as a consequence of intestinal obstruction. In humans, transmission usually occurs by hand-to-mouth route by way of contaminated agricultural products and food, or from dirty hands.…

Ascariasis in Nigeria.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and projections for the future indicate that the population could reach about 165 million by the year 2000(1). A high proportion of the population is under 15 years of age and the majority of people still live in rural areas(1). These characteristics, in combination with a socioeconomic environment influenced by poverty, poor housing, insufficient sanitation and a need for health education, favour the transmission of the human roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides. In 1986, a WHO report on the prevalence of ascariasis in Africa singled out Nigeria for sp…
