Ascites is the pathologic accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity and is a common manifestation of liver failure, being one of the cardinal signs of portal hypertension. In 1996, the International Ascites Club defined "refractory ascites" as ascites that cannot be mobilized by medical therapy or that recurs early after initial mobilization despite continued treatment. Of all patients with ascites, 5% to 10% will become refractory to medical therapy. Ascites is a rare but important complication of endometriosis because it mimics ovarian cancer. Most cases occur in nulliparous young black women and present with massive ascites. Treatment is effected by ablation of ovarian function by surgery, radiotherapy, or suppression of endometriosis by endocrine therapy. The pathogenesis is unknown. An essential first step in the purification of monoclonal antibodies is the clarification of the ascites fluid. While not ignored, this step has not received critical attention. Six different procedures were evaluated with respect to effectiveness and impact on several selected chemical components. For large-scale work, we find an on-line filtration process to be most efficient.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunts are currently a standard therapy for obstructive hydrocephalus. These shunts are associated with a variety of abdominal complications, one of which is the development of ascites. We report an 11-year-old girl with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt in whom a low-grade peritoneal infection presented with ascites. This case demonstrates the importance of diagnostic paracenteses, appropriate antibiotic therapy and the potential need to establish an alternative route for cerebrospinal fluid diversion in patients with ventriculoperitoneal shunts and ascites.

Yoshida ascties sarcoma and its variants and several azo dye-induced ascites hepatomas of rats were examined by an immuno-peroxidase technique to demonstrate surface immunoglobulins. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) ascites is a rare cause of ascites that presents in patients with ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts, treated by conversion to a ventriculoatrial shunt.
