An experimental burn wound-healing study of non-thermal atmospheric pressure microplasma jet arrays.

In contrast with a thermal plasma surgical instrument based on coagulative and ablative properties, low-temperature (non-thermal) non-equilibrium plasmas are known for novel medicinal effects on exposed tissue while minimizing undesirable tissue damage. In this study we demonstrated that arrays of non-thermal microplasma jet devices fabricated from a transparent polymer can efficiently inactivate fungi (Candida albicans) as well as bacteria (Escherichia coli), both in vitro and in vivo, and that this leads to a significant wound-healing effect. Microplasma jet arrays offer several advantages o

Thermal and photochemical reactions of NO2 on chromium(III) oxide surfaces at atmospheric pressure.

While many studies of heterogeneous chemistry on Cr(2)O(3) surfaces have focused on its catalytic activity, less is known about chemistry on this surface under atmospheric conditions. We report here studies of the thermal and photochemical reactions of NO(2) on Cr(2)O(3) at one atm in air. In order to follow surface species, the interaction of 16-120 ppm NO(2) with a 15 nm Cr(2)O(3) thin film deposited on a germanium crystal was monitored in a flow system using attenuated total reflectance (ATR) coupled to a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Gas phase products were monitored in t

Bacterial-killing effect of atmospheric pressure non-equilibrium plasma jet and oral mucosa response.

Recently, plasma sterilization has attracted increasing attention in dental community for the atmospheric pressure non-equilibrium plasma jet (APNPs), which is driven by a kilohertz pulsed DC power, may be applied to the dental and oral diseases. However, it is still in doubt whether APNPs can effectively kill pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity and produce no harmful effects on normal oral tissues, especially on normal mucosa. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bacterial-killing effect of APNPs in the biofilms containing a single breed of bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, P.g.), a…

Positive and negative gas-phase ion chemistry of chlorofluorocarbons in air at atmospheric pressure.

This paper presents a report on the ionization/dissociation of some representative chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) induced by corona discharges in air at atmospheric pressure. Both positive and negative ions formed from Freons 1,1,1-trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFC 113a), 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFC 113), and 1,1,1,2-tetrachlorodifluoroethane (CFC 112a) were analyzed using an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS) instrument. Energy-resolved mass spectra were obtained by modulating the kinetic energy of the ions via adjustment of the sampling cone potential (V(con…

Atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry of purine and pyrimidine markers of inherited metabolic disorders.

Purines and pyrimidines are of interest owing to their significance in processes in living organisms. Mass spectrometry is a promising analytical tool utilized in their analysis. Two atmospheric pressure ionization (API) methods (electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)) in both negative and positive modes applied to selected purine and pyrimidine metabolites (markers of inherited metabolic disorders) were studied. APCI is less sensitive to alkali metal cations present in a sample and offers higher response than ESI for studied compounds. Both of the te…

Analysis of urinary organic acids by liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry.

We developed a new method for the rapid determination of urinary organic acids using liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry. Mass spectra of authentic organic acids obtained in the negative-ion mode showed intense [M-H]- ions with some fragment ions. Urine samples of patients with methylmalonic aciduria, ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, and phenylketonuria were extracted using anion-exchange columns. The mass chromatograms of the extracts showed some dominant peaks of abnormal metabolites characteristic of each disorder. This is a useful method f…

Atmospheric pressure, temperature, and online search activity for epilepsy: A daily time-series study.

BACKGROUND: Meteorological conditions have been investigated as potential short-term correlates of epileptic seizures, but findings remain i … sy-related Google search activity. The observed association corresponded to a 13.3-hPa reduction in atmospheric pressure, a difference commonly encountered during the passage of low-pressure weather systems. Although the direction of the association is broadly consistent with some studies reporting increased seizure occurrence during periods of lower atmospheric press …

Entero-Cutaneous and Entero-Atmospheric Fistulas: Insights into Management Using Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.

Enteric fistulas are a common problem in gastrointestinal tract surgery and remain associated with significant mortality rates, due to complications such as sepsis, malnutrition, and electrolyte imbalance. The increasingly widespread use of open abdomen techniques for the initial treatment of abdominal sepsis and trauma has led to the observation of so-called entero-atmospheric fistulas. Because of their clinical complexity, the proper management of enteric fistula requires a multidisciplinary team. The main goal of the treatment is the closure of enteric fistula, but also mortality reduction

Autofluorescence-guided Removal of Bacterial Biofilms from Tissues Using Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAP).

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) has the potential to completely remove biofilms from surfaces. The goal of this study is to employ the autofluorescence nature of bacterial biofilms to guide the removal of these biofilms using a CAP scalpel. Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilms, which produce a green fluorescence under 405 nm UV light, were grown on 12 chicken samples. The tissue model (chicken tissue) is placed on a motorized X-Y stage with the plasma discharge device directly above the sample. Fluorescent-guided CAP treatment of biofilm regions was carried out using a 1.37 lpm Ar/H2O plasm…

Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma potentiates mesodermal differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells.

Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma has been used for biological applications, including sterilization and stimulation of cell growth and differentiation. Here, we demonstrate that plasma exposure influences the differentiation pattern of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). We treated hiPSCs with dielectric barrier-discharge air plasma and found an exposure dose that does not kill hiPSCs. Immunohistochemical staining for E-CADHERIN showed that the exposure affected cell-cell attachment and doubled the average size of the hiPSCs. Analysis of mRNAs in embryoid bodies (EBs) from pl

X3Σg- → b1Σg+ Absorption Spectra of Molecular Oxygen in Liquid Organic Solvents at Atmospheric Pressure.

Spectra and absorption coefficients of the forbidden 765 nm X3Σg- → b1Σg+ transition of molecular oxygen dissolved in organic solvents at atmospheric pressure were recorded over a 5 m path length using a liquid waveguide capillary cell. The results show that it is possible to investigate this weak near-infrared absorption transition in a common liquid hydrocarbon solvent without the need for a potentially dangerous high oxygen pressure. Proof-of-principle data from benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, bromobenzene, and iodobenzene reveal a pronounced heavy atom effect on this spin-forbidden transi…

Atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry of engine oil additive components.

RATIONALE: The efficiency of lubricants strongly depends on the content of functional additives. In order to assess the chemical and structural changes taking place in the lubricating oil and its additives during operation, it is essential to develop a method for simple and prompt analysis. METHODS: Two single additives as well as a fully formulated engine oil were analysed using an atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP-MALDI) source coupled to a linear trap quadrupole Orbitrap XL hybrid tandem mass spectrometer and compared with results obtained by means of ele…

Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma activates Wnt/β-catenin signaling in dermal papilla cells.

There is an unmet need for novel, non-pharmacological therapeutics to treat alopecia. Recent studies have shown the potential biological benefits of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma (NTAPP), including wound healing, angiogenesis, and the proliferation of stem cells. We hypothesized that NTAPP might have a stimulatory effect on hair growth or regeneration. We designed an NTAPP-generating apparatus which is applicable to in vitro and in vivo experiments. The human dermal papilla (DP) cells, isolated fresh hair follicles, and mouse back skin were exposed with the NTAPP. Biological outcomes…

Molecular Mechanisms of the Efficacy of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAP) in Cancer Treatment.

Recently, the potential use of cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) in cancer treatment has gained increasing interest. Especially the enhanced selective killing of tumor cells compared to normal cells has prompted researchers to elucidate the molecular mechanisms for the efficacy of CAP in cancer treatment. This review summarizes the current understanding of how CAP triggers intracellular pathways that induce growth inhibition or cell death. We discuss what factors may contribute to the potential selectivity of CAP towards cancer cells compared to their non-malignant counterparts. Furthermo…

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma causes protein denaturation and endoplasmic reticulum stress in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) does not cause thermal damage or generate toxic residues; hence, it is projected as an alternative agent for sterilization in food and pharmaceutical industries. The fungicidal effects of CAP have not yet been investigated as extensively as its bactericidal effects. We herein examined the effects of CAP on yeast proteins using a new CAP system with an improved processing capacity. We demonstrated that protein ubiquitination and the formation of protein aggregates were induced in the cytoplasm of yeast cells by the CAP treatment. GFP-tagged Tsa1 and Ssa1, …

Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet Treatment of Poly-ε-caprolactone Polymer Solutions To Improve Electrospinning.

An atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) specifically designed for liquid treatment has been used in this work to improve the electrospinnability of a 5 w/v % solution of poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) in a mixture of chloroform and N,N-dimethylformamide. Untreated PCL solutions were found to result in nonuniform fibers containing a large number of beads, whereas plasma-treated solutions (exposure time of 2-5 min) enabled the generation of beadless, uniform nanofibers with an average diameter of 450 nm. This enhanced electrospinnability was found to be mainly due to the highly increased conductivi…
