Aggression and disruptive behavior disorders in children and adolescents.

Aggression is a common symptom of many psychiatric disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, Tourette's disorder, mood disorders (including bipolar disorder), substance-related disorders, alcohol-related disorders, mental retardation, pervasive developmental disorders, intermittent explosive disorder and personality disorders (particularly antisocial personality disorder). Many forms of organic brain disorders may present with aggressive behavior. Aggression is common in some epileptic patients and some endocrinological disea

Trajectories of Response to Treatments in Children with ADHD and Word Reading Difficulties.

This study investigated patterns of response to intervention in children with co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading difficulties (RD), who participated in a randomized clinical trial examining the efficacy of reading intervention, ADHD treatment, or combined treatments. Growth Mixture Modeling (GMM) was used to investigate trajectories of parent and teacher academic impairment ratings and child oral reading fluency, and whether trajectories were predicted by pre-treatment covariates (ADHD severity, reading achievement, phonemic awareness, rapid letter naming,

The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder phenotype as a summation of deficits in executive functioning and reward sensitivity: does this explain its relationship with oppositional defiant disorder?

OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) commonly coexist but the relationship between them has not been well explained. We present a view of the ADHD phenotype as a summation of deficits in executive functioning and reward sensitivity and apply this to explain its co-occurrence with ODD. MODEL: ADHD relates to difficulty in sustaining concentration for completing tasks. This is associated with lack of reward due to lack of achievement. The unfavorable balance of effort to reward in ADHD is exacerbated in ODD, a condition in which lack

The role of family experiences and ADHD in the early development of oppositional defiant disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the role of family experiences in the early development and maintenance of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms in preschool-age children with behavior problems. METHOD: Participants were 199 3-year-old children with behavior problems who took part in 4 annual child and family assessments. RESULTS: Children with behavior problems who were exposed to overreactive parenting practices, maternal depression, marital conflict, and lower family income tended to have more ODD symptoms 3 years later. Moreover, initial changes in paternal overreactivity an

Classifying Conduct Disorder Using a Biopsychosocial Model and Machine Learning Method.

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) is a common syndrome with far-reaching effects. Risk factors for the development of CD span social, psychological, and biological domains. Researchers note that predictive models of CD are limited if the focus is on a single risk factor or even a single domain. Machine learning methods are optimized for the extraction of trends across multidomain data but have yet to be implemented in predicting the development of CD. METHODS: Social (e.g., family, income), psychological (e.g., psychiatric, neuropsychological), and biological (e.g., resting-state graph metric

Reactive and proactive aggression in clinical adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: The moderating role of gender and comorbidities.

Aggression is well-known problem in adolescent with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but the precise relation of reactive and proactive aggression by gender and comorbidities has not been characterized in this population. The aim of this study was to assess the level of reactive and proactive aggression in adolescents with ADHD and in matched non-ADHD clinical controls. The level of aggression was assessed by the Reactive and Proactive Aggression Questionnaire in 391 adolescents with ADHD and in 391 matched non-ADHD clinical controls. The selection of adolescents with ADHD was

Editorial: A Transdiagnostic Symptom Requires a Transdiagnostic Approach: Neural Mechanisms of Pediatric Irritability.

Irritability, a hallmark feature of the new DSM-5 category of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), is present in many pediatric disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), depressive and anxiety disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. Indeed, irritability is among the most common presenting complaints in child psychiatry1 and predicts long-term impairments, including high suicidality and decreased education and income attainment.2.

Temperamental correlates of disruptive behavior disorders in young children: preliminary findings.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to test the hypothesis that temperamental behavioral disinhibition measured in early childhood would be associated with disruptive behavior disorders. METHODS: We used variables from laboratory-based behavioral observations originally devised to assess behavioral inhibition to construct a theory-based a priori definition of "behavioral disinhibition" in 200 young children at-risk for panic disorder, depression, or both and 84 children of parents without anxiety or major depressive disorder. We then compared behaviorally disinhibited and nonbehaviorally disinhibit

Motor Proficiency, Manual Dexterity, and Visual Perception in School-age Children With ADHD: Contribution of Different Comorbidities.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often comorbid with a number of other psychiatric conditions. The goal of this study was to investigate whether motor skills, manual dexterity, and visual perception differ in the presence of ADHD and comorbid psychiatric conditions in school-age boys by comparing them to a group of children with typical development (TD). We evaluated 81 boys 6 to 10 years of age in 5 groups: ADHD only (n=18); ADHD+specific learning disorders (ADHD+SLDs) (n=17); ADHD+oppositional defiant disorder (n=16); ADHD+anxiety disorders (n=15); and TD (n=15). Fruit and vegetable intake is inversely associated with severity of inattention in a pediatric population with ADHD symptoms: the MADDY Study.

OBJECTIVES: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a U.S. pediatric prevalence of 8-10%. It presents with inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity; frequently associated with emotional dysregulation (ED) symptoms common in Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. The etiology of ADHD is multi-factorial; symptom severity is associated with diet. This study examines the association of diet quality with ADHD and ED symptoms within a pediatric research cohort. METHODS: Baseline data were analyzed for 134 children age

Child executive function and future externalizing and internalizing problems: A meta-analysis of prospective longitudinal studies.

To determine the association between executive function and later externalizing and internalizing problems, we conducted a meta-analysis of 167 studies (1098 effect sizes, total N = 66,119) that explored the longitudinal associations between executive functions in children and subsequent externalizing and internalizing problems. The results indicated that greater child executive function was prospectively associated with fewer attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, fewer conduct problems, fewer oppositional defiant disorder symptoms, less substance use, fewer broad externali

Differentiating Symptoms of ADHD in Preschoolers: The Role of Emotion Regulation and Executive Function.

Objective: This study examined the extent to which individual differences in executive function (EF) and emotion regulation (ER) were uniquely associated with inattention and hyperactivity symptoms of ADHD, respectively. Method: Participants included 249 preschool children with at-risk or clinically elevated levels of externalizing behavior problems (EBPs). Results: Regression analyses were conducted examining the association between EF and ER-as reported by parents/teachers and assessed via child task performance-and hyperactivity and inattention. Even after accounting for IQ, age, sex, and s

Multidimensional Correlates of Parental Self-Efficacy in Managing Adolescent Internet Use among Parents of Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Given the growing concerns of problematic Internet use and online safety, it is critical to address parental self-efficacy in managing adolescent Internet use and to examine associated factors, especially in parents of adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We examined the roles of adolescents' hyperactivity/impulsivity, inattention and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms, parents' depressive symptoms, parenting behavior (parental care and indifference), and child behavior (Internet addiction) in relation to parental self-efficacy in managing adolescent Inte

Network Analysis of ADHD and ODD Symptoms: Novel Insights or Redundant Findings with the Latent Variable Model?

A latent variable model (LVM) and network analysis (NA) were applied to mother and father ratings of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms to determine if NA offers unique insights relative to the LVM. ADHD-inattention (IN), ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity (HI), and ODD symptoms along with academic competence behaviors (reading, arithmetic, and writing skills) were rated by mothers and fathers of Brazilian (n = 894), Thai (n = 2075), and United States (n = 817) children (Mage = 9.04, SD = 2.12, 49.5% females). LVM indicated that (1) the

Risk factors for comorbid oppositional defiant disorder in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is highly prevalent in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Individuals with both ADHD and ODD (ADHD + ODD) show a considerably worse prognosis compared with individuals with either ADHD or ODD. Therefore, identification of risk factors for ADHD + ODD is essential and may contribute to the development of (early) preventive interventions. Participants were matched for age, gender, and ADHD-subtype (diagnostic groups), and did not differ in IQ. Predictors included pre- and perinatal risk factors (pregnancy duration, birth weight, maternal smoking d

The development and course of youth psychopathology: a longitudinal study of prevalence and continuity from early childhood through late adolescence.

Youth mental disorders are prevalent and show homotypic and heterotypic continuity. We followed a community sample of 609 families with 3-year-old children living within 20 contiguous miles of Stony Brook, NY, with at least one biological parent; primary caregivers were required to speak English, and children with significant medical or developmental disorders were excluded. Participants were assessed at three-year intervals from ages 3-18, tracking the prevalence and continuity of five common mental disorders (depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, disruptive behavior,
