INTRODUCTION: Neisseria meningitidis is a leading cause of meningitis and sepsis worldwide. Thus, monitoring the epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is an important public health measure. The National Reference Centre for Meningococci at the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety is operating the laboratory-based surveillance database.

AIM: The aim of our study was to assess the availability of videofluoroscopy to examine patients with swallowing disorders in Austria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to the department heads of the radiology departments of all hospitals (n=143) and to all non-hospital-based radiologic practices (n=226) throughout Austria. In the last two decades, botulinum toxin A (BtxA) has become the treatment of choice for spasmodic torticollis, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. From 3,404 Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in 12 localities of Styria, Austria in 1990, 15 tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus isolates were recovered. Minimal field infection rate reached 4.4 virus containing ticks out of 1,000 collected ticks. Five isolates of TBE virus were obtained from target organs of Apodemus flavicollis trapped in locality Wagnitz. In a serosurvey based on virus neutralizing antibodies high prevalence of TBE virus was demonstrated in A. flavicollis (47.9%) and Clethrionomys glareolus (29.4%). These rodents formed 57.8% and 41.0% of 83 trapped small mammals.

Infection with tick-borne spirochetes (e.g. Borrelia burgdorferi) may lead to the development of erythema chronicum migrans, acrodermatitis atrophicans, meningopolyneuritis Bannwarth, and a special type of reactive arthritis named Lyme disease after the American endemic area. This paper reports on an epidemiological study of 304 cases of virus meningo-encephalitis hospitalized at the Neurological Clinic at Graz during the 1953 epidemic in Styria, Austria.
