[Role of the autonomic nervous system in the genesis of the electrophysiologic pattern of the double nodal pathway].

Thirty-five patients (age: 53 +/- 13 years) with dual A-V nodal pathways pattern were studied following autonomic blockade (propranolol 0.2 mg/kg and atropine 0.04 mg/kg). Six of them had "idionodal" paroxysmal reentrant supraventricular tachycardia. After autonomic blockade the dual A-V nodal pathways pattern remained in 20 patients (57%) and disappeared in 15; however, in the latter, the effective refractory period of the fast pathway decreased significantly and the disappearance of the slow pathway conduction may not have been real since the marked shortening of the fast pathway refractory

Acute multiple mononeuropathy after accidental exposure to oven microwaves.

A patient accidentally exposed to oven microwaves developed an acute and severe dystrophy and sympathetic reflex of the right hand, a peripheral neuropathy of the digits of the left hand, and a sensory injury of the trigeminal nerve in the right side of the face. The physiopathological involvement in the injury of the peripheral nerve and the failure of analgesia with carbamazepine are emphasized. In this causalgia, relief from pain and modification of the autonomic disorders can be achieved by a sympathetic block.

Efficacy of stellate ganglion block for refractory sensorineural olfactory dysfunction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of stellate ganglion block for persistent and refractory sensorineural olfactory dysfunction. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar and the Cochrane Library was conducted for studies published before December 2025. Eligible studies assessed subjective and/or objective olfactory outcomes before and after stellate ganglion block and, when available, compared stellate ganglion block with placebo or no treatment. RESULTS: Nine studies involving 441 participants were included. Stellate ganglion block w

Progress in the Application of Stellate Ganglion Block in Non-Analgesic Fields.

Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is a specific type of peripheral nerve block in which local anesthetics and/or steroids are injected around the stellate ganglia. In the past,SGB was mainly used to alleviate pain-related syndromes. With the development of ultrasound technology,SGB has been widely used in non-analgesic fields, demonstrating significant therapeutic effects on arrhythmias, hot flashes, psychiatric disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, insomnia, and post coronavirus disease-2019 conditions in recent years. This study reviews the progress in the application of SGB in the non-analgesic fields.

Stellate ganglion block in perioperative practice: a narrative review.

The stellate ganglion block, also known as the cervicothoracic ganglion block, has traditionally been utilised by chronic pain physicians for managing sympathetic-mediated pathologies, such as chronic regional pain syndrome and hyperhidrosis. However, recent evidence suggests that the SGB, by inhibiting sympathetic outflow, modulating vasodilation and regional perfusion, and attenuating stress and inflammation responses, might serve as a safe and minimally invasive intervention for preventing or treating common conditions observed in surgical patients. Its potential applications include preven

Stellate ganglion block for non-pain indications: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is performed to relieve head, face, neck, or upper limb pain, and several non-pain indications for performing this block have emerged over the years. To date, there has been no attempt to synthesize evidence on SGB for treating non-pain indications. This scoping review presents a summary of the efficacy and adverse effects of SGB when performed for 6 non-pain indications. METHODS: This scoping review was accomplished through the use of Arksey and O'Malley framework. A literature search was conducted for relevant articles in medical databases to iden

A case of severe trigeminal neuralgia: recovery by means of stellate ganglion block with procaine. Discussion of possible mechanisms of action.

Drug and invasive treatment options for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) are often fraught with problems. Knowledge of the involvement of the autonomic nervous system, especially the sympathetic portion, in the pain process has grown rapidly in recent years. Both nociceptive and neuropathic pain can be maintained by the sympathetic nervous system, known as 'sympathetically maintained pain' (SMP). This current case report describes a patient with refractory TN that was treated with a stellate ganglion block (SGB). After the first SGB, the patient experienced significant pain relief that became long-la

[Efficacy of stellate ganglion block in perioperative period of patients with chronic sinusitis and hypertension].

Objective: To observe the perioperative efficacy of stellate ganglion block (SGB) in functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in chronic sinusitis patients with hypertension. Methods: A total of 60 patients with chronic sinusitis complicated with hypertension who were scheduled to undergo FESS in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from April 2018 to December 2019 were selected and divided into SGB group and control group by random number table method. SGB were performed at 24 hours before surgery and induction of general anesthesia alte

Sympathetic ablative surgery for palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis.

Excessive sweating interferes considerably with daily life; the problem has become more serious because of the increasing popularity of electronic devices. This disorder also affects social activities and can ultimately lead to psychological withdrawal. Treatment for this embarrassing condition is in high demand.

Plasma lidocaine concentrations in conscious horses after cervicothoracic (stellate) ganglion block with 1% lidocaine HCl solution.

Arterial and/or central venous plasma concentrations of lidocaine were determined in 12 nonmedicated adult horses (422 +/- 59 kg of body weight, mean +/- SD) after injecting a 1% lidocaine HCl solution into the cervicothoracic ganglion (CTG). A mean dosage of 2.9 +/- 0.5 mg of lidocaine/kg of body weight was used to induce unilateral CTG blockade in 8 horses and 4.8 +/- 0.8 mg was used to induce bilateral CTG blockade in 4 horses. Blood samples were collected before and at 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 minutes after injection. The plasma lidocaine concentrations were determined by us

[Management of the postoperative period after vagotomy].

To combat gastroplegia following vagotomy the authors recommend to perform open novocain blockade of the solar plexus by means of a microcatheter, inserted in the round ligament of the liver. The application of the blockade enabled the authors to manage the postoperative period without a sound, to reduce fluids and electrolytes loss by the organism and to minimize the use of anesthetics.

Laryngospasm during subarachnoid block.

Central neuraxial block is associated with increased vagal tone. We report a patient who developed laryngospasm and stridor under spinal anaesthesia. This was treated successfully with i.v. atropine and fluids. We propose that the laryngospasm was secondary to increased vagal tone under the spinal anaesthetic. Such a manifestation of increased vagal tone under spinal anaesthesia has not been reported previously.
