PURPOSE: Few studies have examined menstrual differences between patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) versus avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). After observing that many patients with ARFID maintain regular menses despite weight loss, we sought to characterize these menstrual differences in the context of specific eating behaviors.
METHODS: Patients with AN or ARFID in a disordered eating database at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center were included. Bivariate analyses explored group differences in demographics, age, percentage of median body mass index for age (%

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and food neophobia present significant challenges in pediatric healthcare, particularly among children with food allergies (FAs). These eating disorders, characterized by the persistent avoidance or restriction of food, can lead to severe nutritional deficiencies and psychosocial impairments. The presence of FAs further complicates these eating behaviors, as the fear of allergic reactions exacerbates avoidance and restrictive patterns. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on ARFID and food neophobia, focusing on their definit

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have an increased risk of co-occurring eating disorders such as pica, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and rumination disorder (RD). The aim of the current systematic review was to synthesize and appraise the existing literature of pica, ARFID and RD in children with ASD regarding occurrence, diagnostic assessment, clinical pathways, intervention and the quantity and design of the included studies.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL and P…

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and feeding and eating disorders (FEDs) such as anorexia nervosa (AN) are strongly linked as evidenced by frequent comorbidity and overlapping traits. However, eating and social behaviors are shaped by culture, so it is critical to examine these associations in different populations. Moreover, FEDs are heterogeneous, and there has been no examination of autistic traits in avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).
METHODS: Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of ASD and autistic traits among Japanese children with AN (n = 92) or ARFID (n

BACKGROUND: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is characterized by persistent failure to meet nutritional needs, absence of body image distortion and often low body weight. Weight restorative treatment in ARFID-adults is provided for as in Anorexia Nervosa (AN), while the effect is unknown. The aim was to compare weight gain between ARFID and restrictive subtype of AN (AN-R), including exploring impact of medical factors and psychopathology.
METHODS: Individuals with ARFID (n = 7; all cases enrolled over 5 years) and AN-R (n = 80) were recruited from the Prospective Longitudina

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) involves restrictive eating driven by sensory sensitivity, low interest in food, or fear of negative consequences of eating. ARFID affects males and females equally and presents across the weight spectrum. Leptin, an anorexigenic hormone linked to adiposity, may contribute to low hunger and early satiety in ARFID. Prior findings indicate low leptin levels in low-weight females with ARFID; however, the role of leptin in ARFID across weight status and sex remains unknown. We hypothesized that youth with full/subthreshold ARFID, includi

OBJECTIVE: Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) may restrict food intake to manage their symptoms (particularly gastrointestinal [GI]). Whether some patients may develop nutritional and/or quality-of-life impairments indicative of an eating disorder, avoidant or restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), is unknown. We aimed to (1) identify the prevalence and characteristics of ARFID symptoms in patients with SSc and (2) explore the relationship among ARFID symptoms, GI symptom burden, and health-related quality of life.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional internet survey nationwide in Spain, pati

OBJECTIVE: Research comparing psychiatric comorbidities between individuals with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and anorexia nervosa (AN) is limited. ARFID often develops in childhood, whereas AN typically develops in adolescence or young adulthood. Understanding how age may impact differential psychological comorbidity profiles is important to inform etiological conceptualization, differential diagnosis, and treatment planning. We aimed to compare the lifetime frequency of psychiatric comorbidities and suicidality between females with ARFID (n = 51) and AN (n = 40), investi

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is new in the DSM-5, replacing the DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of Feeding Disorder of Infancy or Early Childhood. ARFID has no age criterion, and therefore addresses eating disturbances across the lifespan. This report illustrates the case of an 11-year-old boy of Colombian ancestry with ARFID and explores the role of culture in the diagnosis of ARFID. To date, literature describing this disorder is limited. ARFID is often seen in the child and adolescent population and can have significant medical consequences, including weight loss, hemodynamic insta

PURPOSE: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is associated with acute and chronic physical health risks, but population-level data remain limited.
METHODS: We analysed national surveillance data from 319 clinician-reported cases of ARFID among children aged 5-18 in the UK and Republic of Ireland over a 13-month period. Physical health variables at presentation were assessed using the Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders medical risk criteria. Multivariable logistic regression models examined associations with acute medical risk and nutritional deficiencies. Longitudinal mixed…

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (CBT-AR) is an emerging treatment for ARFID, but to date, it has only been delivered by mental health clinicians. Given the relevance of nutrition to treatment goals, we adapted the treatment to be dietetic-led (D-CBT-AR).
METHOD: We conducted a pilot trial of D-CBT-AR. Participants self-referred to a multidisciplinary eating-disorder clinic in Brisbane, Australia, and attended in person or virtually. Participants rated D-CBT-AR on acceptability and feasibility. We also measured changes in ARFID psychopathol

The experience of the Australian healthcare system regarding diagnosis, treatment, management, and care was explored for adults with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and their family and caregivers. Twenty-nine adults with ARFID and 24 parents completed an online survey asking about their subjective experiences with the Australian healthcare system. The survey data were analysed using thematic analysis, while ARFID characteristics were analysed using frequencies and a secondary analysis of the congruence of perceptions. All participants met diagnostic criteria for ARFID as per

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding and eating disorder linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that has been associated with prior traumatic experiences, but its relationship to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been relatively unexplored. Whether trauma and PTSD are more closely associated with specific clinical profiles of ARFID (fear of adverse consequences of eating, sensory sensitivity, and/or lack of interest in food/eating) is unclear.
METHOD: 89 patients (25 adolescents, 64 adults) admitted to residential treatment (RT) with a DSM-5 diagn…

BACKGROUND: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder is a recently introduced concept, initially focused on non-adult populations, and encompasses multiple dimensions such as physiological and psychological aspects. Due to symptom overlap, food avoidance and related symptoms in patients with gastrointestinal diseases are often overlooked or rationalized. The confusion and unclear definitions of related concepts have hindered further research and exploration.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to clarify the concept of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder in adults with gastrointestinal diseases

Health-threatening underweight and poor growth is a frequent consequence of Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and should be a priority for treatment in children and adolescents (young people, YP). Coexisting autism is more prevalent in YP with ARFID than in YP with other eating disorders. Treatment studies are still sparse for ARFID, and it is not known whether treatment response is lower in those with coexisting autism, as it is documented in other eating disorders. In this study we examined if family-based treatment for ARFID (FBT-ARFID) was associated with weight gain in und…

BACKGROUND: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding and eating disorder, characterized by limited variety and/or quantity of food intake impacting physical health and psychosocial functioning. Children with ARFID often present with a range of psychiatric and somatic symptoms, and therefore consult various pediatric subspecialties; large-scale studies mapping comorbidities are however lacking. To characterize health care needs of people with ARFID, we systematically investigated ARFID-related mental and somatic conditions in 616 children with ARFID and >30,000 children wi…

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive behavioral therapy for Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID; CBT-AR) is an emerging treatment for ARFID. However, this treatment modality has yet to be examined among older adults (e.g., older than 50 years) or with adults presenting with feeding tubes. To inform future versions of CBT-AR, we present the results of a singular case study (G) of an older male with the sensory sensitivity phenotype of ARFID who presented for treatment with a gastrostomy tube.
METHODS: G was a 71-year-old male who completed eight sessions of CBT-AR in a doctoral training clinic. A…

OBJECTIVE: Little research exists on Rome IV disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI; formerly called functional gastrointestinal disorders) in outpatients with eating disorders (EDs). These data are particularly lacking for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), which shares core features with DGBI. We aimed to identify the frequency and nature of DGBI symptoms among outpatients with EDs.
METHOD: Consecutively referred pediatric and adult patients diagnosed with an ED (n = 168, 71% female, ages 8-76 years) in our tertiary care ED program between March 2017 and July 2019 complete
