In 10 blood samples from mothers who were studied after the delivery of a male infant and who had Y-body-containing cells in their circulations (mean value, 0.06%) the proportions of surface-Ig- and Y-body-positive lymphocytes were determined after passage through nylon wool. In each case one part of the sample was treated with pronase before the nylon wool incubation and the other was not. Passage through nylon wool of maternal lymphocytes not treated with pronase resulted in a drastic decrease of fetal cells, since only 1 Y-body-containing cell was found in 1 of the 10 maternal blood samples

Thymus derived (T) and bone-marrow derived (B) lymphocytes were quantitated in 11 untreated patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and in 11 age and sex matched controls. B lymphocytes are known to synthesise the P2X7 subtype of the P2X purinergic receptor family; however, the identification of the other six P2X subtypes on these cells has been limited by the absence of specific antibodies. In this study, we used a panel of anti-P2X polyclonal antibodies and confocal microscopy to examine the presence of each P2X receptor on human B lymphocytes. We observed that P2X1, P2X2, P2X4 and P2X7 subtypes, but not P2X3, P2X5 and P2X6 subtypes, are present on B lymphocytes.

Using our in vitro model of normal B cell infection that functions with low doses of HIV but requires virus opsonization by seropositive patient serum, and complement, we analyzed what receptors allowed virus entry. Here, we show that HIV infection of B cells occurs through 2 major receptors: the CD4 antigen and the CR1/CR2 complex. These 2 pathways work independently since a complete inhibition of virus entry requires both CD4 and CD21/CD35 blockade on CD4dim tonsillar B cells whereas only the latter is critical on CD4-negative B cells.

Estimation of T and B lymphocytes was done in 50 patients of enteric fever, 50 duration matched non enteric fever patients and 50 normal healthy individuals. The difference in both early and late rosette forming T lymphocytes was found to be statistically significant in enteric versus non-enteric patients.
