The bacteriology of chronic suppurative otitis media.

Specimens obtained directly from the middle ear under direct vision from 40 patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) were investigated quantitatively and qualitatively for aerobes and anaerobes. Twenty one of the 40 specimens yielded aerobes only, 17 yielded a mixed flora of anaerobes and aerobes while only one yielded anaerobes only and the remaining one was sterile. Bacteroides fragilis was the commonest anaerobe and the second single most common bacteria generally present in CSOM. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were the dominant aerobic flora appearing in 17 a

Bacteriology of acute otitis media in adults.

OBJECTIVE: --The objective of this study was to determine the bacteriology of acute otitis media in adults. Although this has frequently been studied in children, no data have recently been reported from adults in the United States. Additionally, information on the prevalence of Haemophilus influenzae as a causative organism in acute otitis media in adults has not been available. DESIGN: --Middle-ear aspirates for cultures were obtained by myringotomy from adults meeting entry criteria. SETTING: --Emergency department, Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pa. PATIENTS: --Thirty-four patients…

Bacteriology of chronic otitis media with effusion.

Samples of middle ear effusions from 102 children with serous and mucoid otitis media were cultured for mycoplasmas and bacteria. No sample yielded mycoplasmas but bacteria were cultured from 48 (47 per cent). Organisms commonly regarded as pathogens were present in 25 samples (Haemophilus influenzae 17, Streptococcus pneumoniae four, other streptococci four). The only sample from which anaerobic bacteria were isolated was from a patient with cholesteatoma.

Bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis in adults.

Aspirates of 72 chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses were processed for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Bacterial growth was present in 66 of the 72 specimens (92%). Anaerobic bacteria were isolated in 58 of the 66 culture-positive specimens (88%). Anaerobes only were recovered in 37 cases (56%) and in 21 (32%) they were mixed with aerobic or facultative bacteria. Aerobic or facultative bacteria were present in eight cases (12%). A total of 185 isolates (2.8 per specimen)--131 (2.0 per specimen) anaerobes and 54 (0.8 per specimen) aerobes or facultatives--were isolated. The predominant anaer

[Bacteriology of the ejaculate--a useful study?].

In a retrospective study we analyzed the results of 318 bacteriologic tests of ejaculates from 175 patients with suspected infections of the prostate, epididymis and urethra. Only 55% of all bacteriologic tests were positive, and the bacteria most frequently found were those normally present in the anterior male urethra, enterococci and coagulase-negative staphylococci. These results indicate that bacteriologic testing of the ejaculate does not yield such reliable results as the segmented urine culture technique and the examination of expressed prostatic secretions.

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Bacteriology and clinical implications.

We report the results of eye culture specimens, obtained from patients under 20 years of age, submitted to the Bacteriology Department of our institution from January 1 through April 30, 1983. A total of 72 specimens were positive for one or more strains of bacteria. The most commonly isolated bacteria was Hemophilus influenzae (34 strains, 42%), followed by Staphylococcus epidermidis (11 strains, 13.75%) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (9 strains, 11.25%). Mean age of patients with H. influenzae (excluding a 20-year-old patient) was 15 months with standard deviation of 13 months. Chloramphenicol…

[Thoracic empyema. Focus on bacteriology and therapy].

Treatment of empyema thoracis is a difficult one, especially when it occurs in a large residual pleural cavity or with a bronchopleural fistula. Sixty three patients have been studied: 39 post-surgical cases (pneumonectomy 21, lobectomy 14, therapeutic pneumothorax 4) and 24 cases without previous surgical procedure. Bacteriologic findings were as follows: 19% of the cultures were negative; Staphylococcus aureus has been isolated in 43% of the positive cultures, Gram negative bacilli in 40%, anaerobic germs in 21.5% and Streptococcus pneumoniae in one case. In 55 patients (87%) initial treatme

Bacteriology of chronic tonsillitis in young adults.

Tonsils were obtained from 22 young adults (mean age, 23 years) suffering from chronic tonsillitis. Mixed aerobic and anaerobic flora was obtained from core tonsillar cultures in all patients, yielding an average of 9.0 isolates (5.3 anaerobes and 3.7 aerobes) per specimen. The predominant anaerobic isolates were Bacteroides sp, Fusobacterium sp, and gram-positive cocci. The predominant aerobic isolates were alpha-hemolytic streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Branhamella catarrhalis, beta-hemolytic streptococci, and hemophilus sp. beta-Lactamase-production was noted in 32 isolates recovered f

[Chronic posttraumatic osteomyelitis. Clinical aspects and bacteriology].

50 patients suffering from chronic posttraumatic osteomyelitis were examined. In 66% an open fracture, caused either by traffic or industrial accidents was the primary reason for hospitalization. The most frequent pathogenic bacterium was staphylococcus aureus: 80% of the patients suffered from staphylococcal infections, mostly, however, in mixed culture with pseudomonas aeruginosa or clebsiella. Whereas the peripheral leukocyte count and the serum electrophoresis showed abnormal values only in a small percentage of the patients, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate proved to be a reliable index

The bacteriology of acute pelvic inflammatory disease.

The bacteriology of acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) was studied in 20 patients by simultaneous cul-de-sac, cervical, and blood cultures with aerobic and fastidious anaerobic techniques. Cul-de-sac cultures were positive in 18 of 20 patients, while all 8 normal control subjects yielded negative results (p less than 0.0005, chi-square analysis). Anaerobic bacteria (predominatly Peptococcus and Peptostreptococcus) were present in 10 patients (59 per cent), and they were the exclusive isolates in 3 patients. N. gonorrhoeae was isolated only once from the cul-de-sac despite its presence in …

The bacteriology of hidradenitis suppurativa: a systematic review.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disabling skin disease consisting of recurrent nodules, sinuses, fistulas and scarri … l of 324 patients with HS (mean age 36.8 years and female/male ratio 215/109). This overview of the bacteriology may aid researchers and physicians exploring the potential role of bacteria in HS. Furthermore, to stimulate a broader debate, we also present different viewpoints on the possible role of bacteria in HS.

Bacteriology of hidradenitis suppurativa/acne inversa: A review.

Given that follicular papules and pustules, as well as nodules and abscesses, are the clinical hallmarks of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), an infectious, bacterial pathway has been suspected in the pathogenesis of this chronic, inflammatory condition. Elucidating the behavior and role of bacterial species in HS and their interaction with cutaneous innate immunity will provide more insight into the pathophysiology of this condition. This review of prospective investigations suggests a synergistic relationship between impaired innate immunity and microbial factors in the etiology of HS.

Bacteriology and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of peritonsillar abscess.

INTRODUCTION: Peritonsillar abscess is a common complication of acute tonsillitis. Its management consists of aspiration or surgical drainage followed by appropriate antibiotics. Appropriate antibiotic treatment depends on the common organisms associated with infection and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern in local scenario. METHODS: Pus samples aspirated from diagnosed cases of peritonsillar abscess and submitted for culture and sensitivity in last two years were included in this study. Identification of different microorganisms was made on the basis of the microscopic findings, observati
