AIMS: This paper presents the potential of environmentally sourced bacteriophages to affect the growth of clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms, and assesses the respective plaque morphotypes presented by each bacteriophage, in vitro.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Bacterial host strains were typed for their ability to produce the quorum sensing-controlled virulence factor pyocyanin, and then tested for bacteriophage susceptibility using the spot test method. The bacteriophages were co-administered with ciprofloxacin in order to determine whether the bacteriophages would demonstrate syne

OBJECTIVE: To isolate and characterize bacteriophages with strong in vitro lytic activity against various pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from dogs with ocular infections.
SAMPLE: 26 genetically distinct P aeruginosa isolates.
PROCEDURES: P aeruginosa strains were derived from dogs with naturally acquired ulcerative keratitis. From a large-scale screening for bacteriophages with potential therapeutic benefit against canine ocular infections, 2 bacteriophages (P2S2 and P5U5) were selected; host ranges were determined, and phage nucleic acid type and genetic profile were ide

Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect bacteria and have emerged as promising agents for bacterial control in human, animal, and environmental fields. On the other hand, their practical application is limited by instability outside the bacterial hosts, which compromises their efficacy. The incorporation of bacteriophages into polymeric materials has been explored as a strategy to protect the viruses from rapid environmental inactivation and, in some cases, to allow controlled release. In this review, association maps provide a broad overview of the main polymers and fabrication ap

Today, many poultry production systems require no antibiotics ever. Due to the unavailability of novel antibiotics for veterinary use, presence of multidrug resistant bacteria, and official banning of many antibiotic classes for use in veterinary medicine for production animals, the need for alternative therapeutics such as competitive exclusion compounds, vaccines, nano-medicine, etc. has become an urgent need. In this context, bacteriophages are regarded as an antibiotic alternative. Bacteriophages are viruses that target to infect, replicate, and lyse numerus types of bacteria in humans, an

The female reproductive tract (FRT) microbiome plays a vital role in maintaining vaginal health. Viruses are key regulators of other microbial ecosystems, but little is known about how the FRT viruses (virome), particularly bacteriophages that comprise the phageome, impact FRT health and dysbiosis. We hypothesize that bacterial vaginosis (BV) is associated with altered FRT phageome diversity, transkingdom interplay, and bacteriophage discriminate taxa. Here, we conducted a retrospective, longitudinal analysis of vaginal swabs collected from 54 BV-positive and 46 BV-negative South African women

Acne vulgaris is the most common dermatological disorder worldwide. It is a multifactorial disease that involves increased sebum production, hyperkeratinization of the pilosebaceous unit, Propionibacterium acnes (Cutibacterium acnes) colonization, and inflammation. The human skin microbiome hosts a wide variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. A delicate balance of these microorganisms is essential for the barrier function of the skin. Propionibacterium acnes represents nearly 90% of the human skin microbiome of healthy adults. Acne is a chronic recurrent disease that

Effect of different levels of virions protein acylation on lytic activity, parameters of interaction with sensitive bacterial cells and other biological properties of phages has been studied in experiments on Klebsiella 45 bacteriophage. It was shown that at 5-, 10- and 20% levels of the phage sample acylation the specific lytic activity increased 90, 12 and 8 times, respectively, adsorbtion velocity constant increased 9, 8 and 8 times, respectively, and latent period decreases by 20% in all cases of the development of productive infection caused by succinylated phages. Such chemical modificat

11 new bacteriophages, 3 from Listeria monocytogenes serovar 5 and 8 from Listeria innocua were isolated from lysogenic strains without induction. Phagovar determinations were carried out with these phages and 12 other isolated from L. monocytogenes serovars 1/2 and 4b. 76% of the 142 strains from different serovars tested gave a lytic pattern. The new phage set increased the percentage of determinable L. innocua strains to 61.7%. Different phage patterns underline the distinction between L. monocytogenes and L. innocua. L. monocytogenes serovar 5 is characterized by its great sensibility to m

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes is a non-contagious disease, but it can cause various complications. One of the most common complications of diabetes is diabetic ulcers. Diabetic ulcers are infections that occur in the legs of diabetics due to the destruction of the deepest skin tissue. Recent studies have reported the presence of Alcaligenes faecalis with extensive drug resistance (XDR) properties as a cause of diabetic ulcers. Bacteriophages are known to have the ability to infect bacteria specifically so that they can be used as an alternative solution for treating diabetic ulcers. The purpose of th

Bacteriophage (phage) is regarded as an antimicrobial alternative for Campylobacter in food production. However, the development of phage resistance to the host is a main concern for the phage application. This study characterized the phage CP39 and investigated the phage resistance of CP39 in Campylobacter jejuni NCTC12662. We determined that phage CP39 belonged to the Myoviridae family by the WGS and phylogenetic analysis. Phage CP39 was confirmed as a capsular polysaccharide (CPS)-dependent phage by primary C. jejuni phage typing. It was further confirmed that the phage could not be adsorbe

UNLABELLED: Predators play a central role in shaping community structure, function, and stability. The degree to which bacteriophage predators (viruses that infect bacteria) evolve to be specialists with a single bacterial prey species versus generalists able to consume multiple types of prey has implications for their effect on microbial communities. The presence and abundance of multiple bacterial prey types can alter selection for phage generalists, but less is known about how interactions between prey shape predator specificity in microbial systems. Using a phenomenological mathematical mo

To address the antigen display limitations of current vaccine carriers, we engineered the T4 bacteriophage into a high-capacity platform. The T4 bacteriophage has advantages such as structural stability, high loading capacity, and easy production. However, the presence of high-copy endogenous Soc protein on its capsid surface severely restricts the effective display of exogenous proteins. To overcome the aforementioned spatial limitations, we employed the CRISPR/Cas9 system to precisely knockout the Soc gene of T4 bacteriophage. We successfully achieved the knockout of the Soc gene by co-trans

The increasing prevalence of bacterial pathogens with multiple antibiotic resistance requires development of new approaches to control infections. Phage therapy is one of the most promising approaches. In recent years, research organizations and a number of pharmaceutical companies have intensified investigations aimed at developing bacteriophage-based therapeutics. In the United States and European countries, special centers have been established that experimentally apply phage therapy to treat patients who do not respond to antibiotic therapy. This review describes the features of bacterioph
