The most common forms of severe hearing loss and deafness are related to morphological changes in the cochlea. Many individuals with such fo … l changes that follow cochlear implantation. Insertion of cochlear implants may cause trauma to the basilar membrane, the spiral lamina, and the spiral ligament. Rupture of the basilar membrane may occur. Over time, new bone forms at the cochleostomy and along the implant track. Further investigation is necessary to evaluate the causes of variability of behavioral …

In order to evaluate the frequency selectivity of the 500 Hz FFR we applied narrow-band masking at closely spaced center frequencies in the range 0.25 to 4 kHZ. The results show clearly that it is the apical part of the cochlea that generates the 500 Hz FFR, but the area of the basilar membrane that contributes is rather broad. It was evident that some of the masking effect that was observed in the Vertex-derived response stemmed from as yet obsure brain stem mechanisms. Examination of 3 patients with selected types of hearing impairment confirmed the masking results. When there is a low frequ…

RESULTS: In the control ear, alpha1 staining was observed in the basement membrane overlying the basilar membrane, in the basement membrane of cochlear blood vessels and Schwann cells, and within the spiral limbus. In the control ear, we also observed strong staining for alpha3 and alpha5 chains in the basement membrane overlying the basilar membrane and within …

BACKGROUND: Combining acoustic and electrical stimulation has been successfully used in patients with low-frequency residual hearing. Electr … r trauma was evaluated histologically by a scale of 0-4: 0 - no observable trauma, 1 - elevation of basilar membrane, 2 - rupture of basilar membrane or spiral ligament, 3-dislocation into scala vestibuli and 4 - fracture of modiolus or osseous spiral lamina. The insertion depth was measured by radiography.

It is generally believed that the remarkable sensitivity and frequency selectivity of mammalian hearing depend on outer hair cell-generated … and and slow sharply tuned responses of the reticular lamina, but only a slow tuned response of the basilar membrane. Our results indicate that outer hair cells can generate sufficient force to drive the reticular lamina over all audible frequencies in living cochleae. Contrary to expectations, the cellular force causes a travelling wave rather than an immediate l …

Within the cochlea, the sensory inner hair cells, which transduce the mechanical displacement of the basilar membrane into neural activity, release glutamate that acts on postsynaptic alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate (AMPA) receptor channels located on dendrites of primary auditory neurons. Up to now, it has been thought that the auditory nerve responses passively reflected the motion of the basilar membrane supporting the organ of Corti. Here, we show that dopaminergic lateral olivocochlear efferents drive a permanent gain control at the site of auditory action potential i…

OBJECTIVE: Medial olivocochlear efferent (MOCE) neurons innervate outer hair cells (OHCs) of the cochlea, which in turn leads to basilar membrane motion. We hypothesized that MOCE-induced alterations in basilar membrane motion, independent of traveling waves, is responsible for the cochlear frequency discrimination of sound.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven guinea pigs underwent bilateral otoscopic and audiologic evaluations under general anesthesia. The study comprised two parts. Part I (n=11) included spontaneous otoacoustic emission (SOAE) recordings with or without contralateral pure-tone ac…

Molecular psychophysics attempts to model the observer's response to stimuli as they vary from trial to trial. The approach has gained popularity in multitone pattern discrimination studies as a means of estimating the relative reliance or decision weight listeners give to different tones in the pattern. Various factors affecting decision weights have been examined, but one largely ignored is the relative level of tones in the pattern. In the present study listeners detected a level-increment in a sequence of 5, 100-ms, 2.0-kHz tone bursts alternating in level between 40 and 80 dB SPL. The lev

The purpose of this study was to use a new 21-aminosteroid (U-74006F) with in vitro antioxidant and antilipolytic properties as a pharmacological probe to assess the role of lipid hydrolysis and peroxidation in a rabbit model of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)-induced vasospasm. Cerebral angiograms were performed on 15 rabbits. Eighteen hours later, 1 cc/kg of autologous blood was infused into the cisterna magna of all 15 animals. Six rabbits received no treatment, six received U-74006F starting 30 minutes after SAH, and three rabbits received the vehicle for U-74006F starting 30 minutes after S

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral vasospasm resulting from subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is refractory to most vasodilators. However, despite evidence that a mechanism underlying the vasospasm may be smooth muscle cell membrane depolarization resulting from decreased K+ conductance, the ability of K+ channel activators to relax the spasm has not been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate whether K+ channel activation selectively relaxes SAH-induced vasospasm.
METHODS: Three days after SAH in the rabbit, relaxation of the basilar artery in response to

Changes in protein kinase C (PKC) activity, membrane lipid metabolism, and the extent of 20-kDa myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation in spastic cerebral basilar arteries were examined by using the beagle "two-hemorrhage" model of subarachnoid hemorrhage. In spastic arteries at days 4 and 7, cytosolic PKC activity showed a decrease of 40-45% with no significant changes in membrane PKC activity as compared with nonspastic control arteries. Cytosolic PKC activity of the day 14 arteries returned toward the normal control level with the remission of vasospasm. Western blot analysis of the PKC i

This study attempted to develop a test which would be specific for endolymphatic hydrops. It is based upon the hypothesis that increased pressure in the scala media will alter the stiffness of the basilar membrane and hence increase the speed of the travelling wave. Auditory brainstem-derived responses were used to measure the basilar membrane travelling wave velocity in normals and to take the equivalent measures in Meniere's patients. Ten normally hearing subjects and 20 Meniere's patients were tested. The data for the Meniere's group showed that the travelling wave velocities were within no…

Psychophysical methods provide a mechanism to infer the characteristics of basilar membrane responses in humans that cannot be directly measured. Because these behavioral measures are indirect, the interpretation of results depends on several underlying assumptions. Ongoing uncertainty about the suitability of these assumptions and the most appropriate measurement and compression estimation procedures, and unanswered questions regarding the effects of cochlear hearing loss and age on basilar membrane nonlinearities, motivated this experiment. Here, estimates of cochlear nonlinearities using te…

INTRODUCTION: Liliequist's membrane is an arachnoid membrane that forms a barrier within the basilar cisternal complex. This structure is an important landmark in approaches to the sellar and parasellar regions. The importance of this membrane was largely recognized after the advance of neuroendoscopic techniques. Many studies were, thereafter, published reporting different anatomic findings.
METHOD: A detailed search for studies reporting anatomic and surgical findings of Liliequist's membrane was performed using "PubMed," and included all the available literature. Manual search for manuscri

Hearing evolved in lampreys with a frequency range of 50-200 Hz. This hearing range is comparable to that of elasmobranchs, most non-teleosts, and lungfish. Elasmobranchs most likely use the saccule and the papilla neglecta (PN) for hearing. In non-teleosts and teleosts, lungfish, and certain tetrapods the saccule is the likely sensor for sound reception while the lagena and the PN are important for gravistatic sensing. Coelacanth and most tetrapods have a basilar papilla (BP) for hearing. In coelacanth and tetrapods, the hair cells of the BP are in contact with a basilar and a tectorial membr
