Effect of Coal Particles on Bed Characteristics and Their Motion Behavior in a Gas-Solid Separation Bed.

Air-dense medium fluidized beds have attracted more attention due to their unique advantage of forming a density bed suitable for coal separation without water participation. However, the detailed effects of coal particles on separation fluidization are not yet fully understood. In this study, the effects of feeding particles on bed fluidization characteristics and bed voidage (including single emulsion phase and bubbling state), as well as their motion behavior, are investigated comprehensively. The results indicate that the initial critical fluidization velocity decreases when a middle- or h…

Repellency and toxicity of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) to bed bugs.

Vector control is essential for eliminating malaria, a vector-borne parasitic disease responsible for over half a million deaths annually. Success of vector control programs hinges on community acceptance of products like long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). Communities in malaria-endemic regions often link LLIN efficacy to their ability to control indoor pests such as bed bugs (Cimex lectularius L. and Cimex hemipterus (F.)) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae). Despite this, little is known about the potential repellent effects and toxicity of LLINs to bed bugs. Herein, we demonstrate for the fi

The murderer is the bed: an unusual case of death by traumatic asphyxia in a hotel folding bunk bed.

This paper presents the first referenced case on a death by traumatic asphyxia in a folding bunk bed. A middle-aged man was found dead in a hotel room trapped into a lower folding bunk bed where he had been sleeping after a party. The autopsy showed signs of asphyxia and excluded signs of struggle and sexual intercourse. Toxicological analyses revealed alcohol intoxication. A differential diagnosis of the manner of death including a technical study of the bed which contributed to understand the circumstances of death was made. The medico-legal investigation of the case strongly supported the h

Comparison of a rocking bed and standard bed for decreasing withdrawal symptoms in drug-exposed infants.

PURPOSE: To determine if the use of a mechanical rocking bed with maternal intrauterine sounds would decrease symptoms of withdrawal and promote neurobehavioral adaptation in drug-affected infants. METHODS: This was a repeated measures experimental design, with infants randomized to a standard bed or a rocking bed. The sample consisted of 14 full-term infants who were prenatally exposed to methadone plus other illicit drugs. RESULTS: Infants receiving the rocking bed therapy experienced a significant increase in withdrawal symptoms and sleep deprivation and displayed suboptimal neurobehavior

Role of head-of-bed elevation in preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia bed elevation and pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Elevating the head of bed (HOB) to 30° to 45° is an evidence-based recommendation to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). However, the available scientific data are inconclusive regarding the optimal degree of HOB elevation which is safe and effective for mechanically ventilated patients. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact a of semirecumbent position at 30° and 45°on the development of VAP as compared with aHOB elevation to <30°. METHODS: A 5-day, single centre, prospective, randomized, controlled, parallel group, three-arm study was conducted in adult patie

INTRODUCTION: Split-thickness nail bed graft have been proposed for treatment of post-traumatic nail bed dystrophies. Only three papers reported good results in 60 to 90% of cases. We report our experience. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed 18 cases of split-thickness nail bed grafts from operative and consultation files and photographs. Evaluation was made using criteria as the nail plate shape, its adhesion on the nail bed, patient satisfaction and possible sequelae on the donor finger. RESULTANTS: Thirteen patients have been reviewed with a sufficient follow-up to assess the results. In 13

CO2 Hydrogenation Using Nonthermal Plasma: Effects of Packed Beds on Plasma Discharge Behavior.

Nonthermal plasma-assisted catalysis offers a promising approach to activate strong chemical bonds such as those in CO2 and transform such s … ffuse discharge, in contrast to localized discharges or surface streamers. CO2 conversion over CeO2 beds of a given particle size were nearly identical irrespective of changes in particle size, further supporting this discharge-dependent behavior. Notably, this work highlights the importance of comparing reactor performance for packed beds under nonpar …

Factors associated with psychiatric admission from observation beds in the psychiatric emergency room.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric emergency services frequently utilize observation units to support disposition decisions when diagnostic uncertainty exists, allowing for extended psychiatric supervision to inform medical decision-making. Yet there is limited data describing predictors of inpatient admission following observation, and understanding which factors are associated with this outcome may improve clinical decision-making and resource utilization. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of adult patients placed in an observation unit within a high-volume urban psychiatric emergency

Optimal Antithrombotic Regimens Across Atherosclerotic Vascular Beds: Toward Mechanism and Risk-Oriented Strategies.

Arterial thrombosis emerges from the interplay between plaque disruption, platelet activation, and coagulation pathway amplification on a background of heterogeneous ischemic and bleeding risk. Optimal antithrombotic therapy therefore varies across clinical settings, from acute coronary syndromes (ACS) to chronic coronary syndromes (CCS), ischemic stroke, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and atrial fibrillation (AF) associated with atherosclerotic disease. Contemporary European and North American guidelines endorse an increasingly individualized approach, moving away from rigid "one-size-fits-

Apolipoprotein E Gene ε4 Allele is Associated with Atherosclerosis in Multiple Vascular Beds.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease that can involve multiple vascular beds. The risk factors for atherosclerosis in multiple vascular beds remain unclear. Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is involved in inflammation and lipid deposition in the process of atherosclerosis. The objective of this study was to investigate whether APOE polymorphisms are associated with atherosclerosis in multiple vascular beds. METHODS: A total of 416 patients with atherosclerosis in single vascular bed and 658 patients with atherosclerosis in multiple vascular beds were included. APOE genotypes were detected…

Intravital imaging of three different microvascular beds in SARS-CoV-2-infected mice.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) enters the respiratory tract, where it infects the alveoli epithelial lining. However, patients have sequelae that extend well beyond the alveoli into the pulmonary vasculature and, perhaps, beyond to the brain and other organs. Because of the dynamic events within blood vessels, histology does not report platelet and neutrophil behavior. Because of the rapid nontranscriptional response of these cells, neither single-cell RNA sequencing nor proteomics report robustly on their critical behaviors. We used intravital microscopy in level

Analysis of tert-butyl hydroperoxide induced constrictions of perfused vascular beds in vitro.

tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH), an inducer of oxidative stress in vitro, elicits constrictor responses of the isolated, rat kidney and mesenteric arteries perfused (5 ml/min) with physiological salt solutions (PSS) at 37 degrees C gassed with carbogen. We hypothesized that generation of superoxide anions (O(2)(-)) accounts for these responses. We assessed responses to t-BOOH in preparations with/without endothelium, and in the absence/presence of antioxidant compounds, catalase and tempol, scavengers of hydroxyl (OH(-)) radical and O(2)(-), respectively. t-BOOH (0.01-50 micromol) induced (e

The reversed venous arterialized nerve graft in digital nerve reconstruction across scarred beds.

Conventional nerve grafts in complex digital injuries often yield poor results, particularly when placed in traumatized or avascular beds. Vascularized nerve grafts offer an option; experimental evidence suggests superior axonal regeneration across scarred beds with vascularized nerve grafts. We previously described a vascularized graft based on the dorsalis pedis artery--deep peroneal nerve "system." Reluctance to sacrifice this major artery, combined with the recent description by Townsend and Taylor and Gu, et al, of "reversed venous" arterialized nerve grafts, spurred us on to investigate …

Displacement field visualization of particle beds after slow impacts using diffusing wave spectroscopy.

For low-velocity impacts into granular materials, most of the impact energy is absorbed by the soil and not transferred into the ejected material. That raises the question of how large the volume of material is that is actually affected by the impact, that is, by subsurface material displacement or compaction. Here we use diffusing wave spectroscopy to detect the changes in local soil packing structure before, during, and after an impact has occurred. We clearly identify a (half)-spherical volume where particles are rearranged, with a radius substantially larger than the diameter of the impact

Stimuli-Responsive Colloidal Gate for Active Modulation of Fluid Flow in Packed Beds.

We present pH-responsive colloidal paste based on brushes of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) grafted on silica microparticles (∼4 μm) that actively modulates bulk fluid flow in packed bed columns of the colloid paste. pH-dependent charge and conformational changes of the PAA brushes in aqueous 10 mM NaNO3 solutions (pH 2-10) give an 8-fold change in flow rate (0.04-0.32 mL/min) through dynamic particle rearrangement in the paste, offering potential for flow rate modulation by pH. The colloid paste is a onsive "colloidal flow gate" that actively changes its permeability based on the aqueous solution a

Minimum and optimal numbers of psychiatric beds: expert consensus using a Delphi process.

The required minimum number of psychiatric inpatient beds is highly debated and has substantial resource implications. The present study used the Delphi method to try to reach a global consensus on the minimum and optimal psychiatric bed numbers. An international board of scientific advisors nominated the Delphi panel members. In the first round, the expert panel provided responses exploring estimate ranges for a minimum to optimal numbers of psychiatric beds and three levels of shortage. In a second round, the panel reconsidered their responses using the input from the total group to achieve …

Using ion-exchange resins to monitor nitrate fluxes in remote semiarid stream beds.

Monitoring in remote areas can represent a real challenge in environmental studies. Numerous techniques have been developed over the last decades to monitor nutrients and other elements in different systems. However, not all of them are suitable for field applications, particularly when the locations are difficult to access or its accessibility depends on seasonal climate conditions. This study was aimed to test the applicability and efficiency of resin samplers and resin bags to monitor nitrates fluxes (NO3-N) in two small semi-arid catchments in Northwestern Mexico. Resin samplers were insta
