Cognitive behavioral therapy improves diverse profiles of depressive symptoms in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is among the most common and debilitating nonmotor complaints in Parkinson's disease (PD), yet there is a paucity of controlled research to guide treatment. Little research has focused on the extent to which specific depressive symptom profiles may dictate unique clinical recommendations to ultimately improve treatment outcomes. The current study examined the impact of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on different types of depressive symptoms in PD. It was hypothesized that the cognitive (eg, guilt, rumination, and negative attitudes towards self) and behavioral (eg, av

Targeting Behavioral Symptoms and Functional Decline in Dementia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dementia-related behavioral symptoms and functional dependence result in poor quality of life for persons with dementia and their caregivers. The goal was to determine whether a home-based activity program (Tailored Activity Program; TAP-VA) would reduce behavioral symptoms and functional dependence of veterans with dementia and caregiver burden. DESIGN: Single-blind (interviewer), parallel, randomized, controlled trial (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT01357564). SETTING: Veteran's homes. PARTICIPANTS: Veterans with dementia and their family caregivers (N = 160 dyads). INTERV

Donepezil for the treatment of behavioral symptoms in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Behavioral and psychologic symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common manifestations in mid- and late-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD). Traditional treatments for BPSD are neuroleptics and sedatives, which are not devoid of serious adverse effects. A number of studies show beneficial effects in the treatment of BPSD with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI). The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of donepezil (using the generic drug Memorit) as monotherapy for AD patients suffering from BPSD. Twenty-eight consecutive patients followed at the Memory Outpatient Clinic and Psychogeriatric De

Stress, sex, and symptomics: Individual posttraumatic stress symptoms and sexual behaviors in adolescents.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is linked with sexual risk, but less is known about which aspects of posttraumatic psychopathology may be most relevant in these associations. In trauma-exposed adolescents from a national sample (N=384, M age =16.4, 72.4% female), we applied a novel "symptomics" approach-which focuses on the role of individual symptoms of psychopathology-to examine associations between PTSD symptoms and two sexual behaviors linked with potential risk: age at first sex and number of recent partners. In relative importance analyses, individual PTSD symptoms explained more va

Positive overgeneralization and Behavioral Approach System (BAS) sensitivity interact to predict prospective increases in hypomanic symptoms: a behavioral high-risk design.

Recent work has identified Behavioral Approach System (BAS) sensitivity as a risk factor for the first onset and recurrence of mood episodes in bipolar disorder, but little work has evaluated risk factors for the prospective development of hypomanic symptoms in individuals at risk for, but without a history of, bipolar disorder. The present study used a prospective behavioral high-risk design to evaluate the impact of positive overgeneralization, a cognitive correlate of risk for hypomania, on hypomanic symptoms in individuals with high vs. moderate BAS sensitivity, but without a history of mo

Evidence for the involvement of the kainate receptor subunit GluR6 (GRIK2) in mediating behavioral displays related to behavioral symptoms of mania.

The glutamate receptor 6 (GluR6 or GRIK2, one of the kainate receptors) gene resides in a genetic linkage region (6q21) associated with bipolar disorder (BPD), but its function in affective regulation is unknown. Compared with wild-type (WT) and GluR5 knockout (KO) mice, GluR6 KO mice were more active in multiple tests and super responsive to amphetamine. In a battery of specific tests, GluR6 KO mice also exhibited less anxious or more risk-taking type behavior and less despair-type manifestations, and they also had more aggressive displays. Chronic treatment with lithium, a classic antimanic

Anticholinergic burden and behavioral and psychological symptoms in older patients with cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Drugs with anticholinergic properties are frequently prescribed to patients with cognitive impairment. The cholinergic system plays an important role in learning processes, memory, and emotions regulation. The aim of this research is to report use of anticholinergic drugs in a clinical population and to investigate the correlation between the use of anticholinergic drugs and the risk of presenting with more severe behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD). METHOD: Patients with a diagnosis of subjective cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia were recr

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer's disease progression in Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Adults with Down syndrome (DS) have a 90% lifetime risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), with neurobiological pathology present decades prior to dementia onset. The profile and timing of cognitive decline in DS is well-documented. However, there is a small body of research on whether Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) occur early on in the progression of AD in DS and are associated with early AD pathology (i.e., amyloid-beta [Aβ] and neurofibrillary tau tangles [NFT]). METHODS: Data were analyzed from 337 adults with DS (M = 45.13 years, SD = 9.53 years) enrolle

A pontomesencephalic PACAPergic pathway underlying panic-like behavioral and somatic symptoms in mice.

Panic disorder is characterized by uncontrollable fear accompanied by somatic symptoms that distinguish it from other anxiety disorders. Neural mechanisms underlying these unique symptoms are not completely understood. Here, we report that the pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP)-expressing neurons in the lateral parabrachial nucleus projecting to the dorsal raphe are crucial for panic-like behavioral and physiological alterations. These neurons are activated by panicogenic stimuli but inhibited in conditioned fear and anxiogenic conditions. Activating these neurons elici

Severity of behavioral addiction symptoms among young adults using non-prescribed sedatives/hypnotics.

INTRODUCTION: Young adulthood is considered a critical period in terms of non-medical use of sedatives/hypnotics (NMUSH) as well as different types of behavioral addictions (BAs). However, the relationship between these behaviors has received scarce attention among young adult samples. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the association between NMUSH and symptoms of distinct BAs among young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analyses were conducted based on the data of two large sample studies (including a representative sample) carried out with young adult samples. The fol

Maternal anxiety symptoms associated with increased behavioral synchrony in the early postnatal period.

The presence of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders has typically been associated with decreases in the quality of mother-infant interactions. However, maternal anxiety symptoms during the postpartum period have been less studied than other mental health disorders like depression. In the current study, we examined associations among symptoms of maternal anxiety, maternal perceived stress, and mother-infant behavioral synchrony in the early postnatal period. Eighty-one mother-infant dyads participated in this study when the infants were 3 months old. Surveys were given to obtain demographic in

Developmental and behavioral aspects of mucopolysaccharidoses with brain manifestations - Neurological signs and symptoms.

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare, inherited lysosomal storage disorders, caused by mutations in lysosomal enzymes involved in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The resulting accumulation of GAGs in the body leads to widespread tissue and organ dysfunction. The spectrum, severity, and progression rate of clinical manifestations varies widely between and within the different MPS types. In addition to somatic signs and symptoms, which vary between the different MPS disorders, patients with MPS I, II, III, and VII present with significant neurological signs and sympt

Pharmacologic treatment of behavioral symptoms associated with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.

Pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs), including autistic disorder (autism), Asperger's disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD NOS), are neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood onset. These disorders persist throughout the lifespan of affected individuals and are characterized by impaired social behavior and communication, along with repetitive, stereotypic behaviors. Early diagnosis and subsequent behavioral therapy have been shown to improve outcomes for these individuals. Risperidone and aripiprazole have been approved by the United States Food and

Behavioral profiles and symptoms of autism in CHARGE syndrome: preliminary Canadian epidemiological data.

Individuals with CHARGE syndrome were identified through the Canadian Pediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP). From this population-based cohort (n=78), we present data on developmental and behavioral characteristics for the first 13 individuals (eight males, five females) for whom assessments are complete. Standardized parent questionnaires on development and behavior were followed by a structured telephone interview, with a specific emphasis on symptoms of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Preliminary results confirm that individuals with CHARGE syndrome have relatively low adaptive behavior s

Behavioral symptoms and psychiatric diagnoses among 162 children in nonalcoholic or alcoholic families.

OBJECTIVE: People with alcoholic relatives have high rates of alcohol abuse and dependence as adults, but their patterns of problems earlier in life are less clear. Many studies have not controlled for parental disorders other than alcoholism or for parents' socioeconomic status and general life functioning. The authors' goal was to conduct a study controlling for such factors. METHOD: Personal structured interviews and a behavioral checklist were administered to the parents of 162 children 7 years old or older whose fathers had participated in the 15-year follow-up of 453 sons of alcoholics

Long-Term Effect of Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors on Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are critical aspects of the clinical presentation of dementia. There is no universally accepted approach for the managment of BPSD, currently based first on a non-pharmacological and subsequently on a pharmacological approach. We explored the potential effect of long-term treatment with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI) on BPSD severity over time. METHODS: The initial sample included 4032 older patients with mild-moderate dementia (Alzhemier's disease - AD, Lewy body dementia - LBD, or vascular dementias - VaD) from the
