Biofeedback interventions for people with cerebral palsy: a systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy is a life-long disability that affects motor control and activities of daily living. Depending on the type of cerebral palsy, some individuals may have trouble performing tasks with one or both of their arms and/or legs. Different strategies exist to help develop motor capacity. Biofeedback therapy is a commonly applied rehabilitation strategy. In biofeedback therapy, information about the motor behavior while completing a task is given back to the individual to help improve their performance. This can provide valuable information that would otherwise be unknown to t

Evaluation of Novel EMG Biofeedback for Postural Correction During Computer Use.

Postural correction is an effective rehabilitation technique used to treat chronic neck and shoulder pain, and is aimed toward reducing the load on the surrounding muscles by adopting a neutral posture. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of real-time high-density surface EMG (HDsEMG) biofeedback for postural correction during typing. Twenty healthy participants performed a typing task with two forms of postural feedback: (1) verbal postural coaching and (2) verbal postural coaching plus HDsEMG biofeedback. The interface used activity from two HDsEMG arrays pl

Dynamic processes in regulation and some implications for biofeedback and biobehavioral interventions.

Systems theory has long been used in psychology, biology, and sociology. This paper applies newer methods of control systems modeling for assessing system stability in health and disease. Control systems can be characterized as open or closed systems with feedback loops. Feedback produces oscillatory activity, and the complexity of naturally occurring oscillatory patterns reflects the multiplicity of feedback mechanisms, such that many mechanisms operate simultaneously to control the system. Unstable systems, often associated with poor health, are characterized by absence of oscillation, rando

Managing passive incontinence and incomplete evacuation.

Both passive faecal incontinence and evacuation difficulty are distressing and demoralising conditions, resulting in physical and psychological problems including social restrictions, loss of self-esteem, altered body image and loss of skin integrity. Conservative management and biofeedback therapy has been shown to help most patients with faecal incontinence and evacuation difficulty by creating a manageable situation that can significantly improve quality of life. However, some patients may not improve their symptoms and require alternative measures. This article reports an audit of the use

Psychological issues in the evaluation and treatment of tension-type headache.

Tension-type headache is the most common headache disorder, affecting approximately 40 % of Americans within a one-year span. Although the most common form, episodic tension-type headache, is rarely impairing, more frequent tension-type headache can occur with significant disability and psychological comorbidity. Appreciating the psychological impact, assessing the associated biopsychosocial issues, and understanding patients' coping styles are important in forming an appropriate treatment plan and maximizing treatment outcomes. A range of psychological therapies including relaxation training,

Possible mechanisms of anosognosia: a defect in self-awareness.

Anosognosia of hemiplegia is of interest for both pragmatic and theoretical reasons. We discuss several neuropsychological theories that have been proposed to explain this deficit. Although for psychological reasons people might deny deficits, the denial hypothesis cannot account for the hemispheric asymmetries associated with this disorder and cannot explain why some patients might deny one deficit and recognize another equally disabling deficit. There is some evidence that faulty feedback from sensory deficits, spatial neglect and asomatognosia might be responsible for anosognosia in some pa

Combined biofeedback and vestibular rehabilitation therapy for vestibular migraine: clinical efficacy and neurobiochemical correlates.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine (VM) is a prevalent cause of recurrent vertigo with limited standardized treatment options. While vestibular rehabilitation and biofeedback therapy have individually demonstrated efficacy, their combined application and effects on neurobiochemical markers remain unexplored. METHODS: This prospective comparative study enrolled 148 patients with VM at a single tertiary center between January 2022 and March 2024. Patients were allocated to four groups (n = 37 each): routine intervention (Group A), vestibular rehabilitation (Group B), biofeedback therapy (Group C),

Usefulness of biofeedback as a potentially educational treatment of temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of biofeedback (BF) as a potential educational treatment for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) through a systematic review and a network meta-analysis. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across five electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, PEDro, Scopus, and Cochrane Library) to identify clinical trials using BF as a therapeutic intervention in patients diagnosed with TMD according to RDC/TMD or DC/TMD criteria. A frequentist fixed-effects network meta-analysis was performed with robust variance estimation to account for within-study corre

A Letter to the Editor on "Effect of Visual Biofeedback Obtained Using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument on the Suprahyoid Muscle Activation Level During Effortful Swallowing Maneuver".

The author has provided an alternative biofeedback method to help maintain the effortful swallowing (ES) maneuver target effort to utilize a constantly high swallowing pressure. The author has identified ES with visual feedback (i.e. the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI)) produced higher EMG activation levels than without. However, the author accepted higher activation levels as higher muscle force production, attributed the lower EMG activation levels in 4th set to fatigue, and did not consider other possibilities. As the author stated in the discussion "his/her method caused participan

A meta-analysis investigating the outcomes and correlation between heart rate variability biofeedback training on depressive symptoms and heart rate variability outcomes versus standard treatment in comorbid adult populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) has previously been used to ameliorate depressive symptoms but its uses for tackling depressive symptoms in an array of comorbid adult patients is less established. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate whether HRVB is a useful tool to reduce depressive symptoms and improve HRV relative to standard treatment in adult comorbid populations, while also attempting to establish the association between the two outcomes. METHODS: An extensive literature review was conducted using several databases including PubMed, Cinahl, Medline, Web of s

Measuring transversus abdominis activity using pressure biofeedback unit-A technical report.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pressure biofeedback is a tool that can detect the movement of a structure and may be used as an indicator of muscle function. It's widely used to measure the transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle activity. Pressure biofeedback (PBU) monitors the abdominal wall movement by measuring the pressure change during abdominal hollowing and can indirectly evaluate the TrA muscle function, which is considered as a valuable tool. The evaluation of the training of core muscles, including the transversus abdominis, requires a reliable outcome. Various methods using different positions
